IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous thread: >>3963218

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started.

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless. If you say nothing, they won't realize they have 10 abs.

Random question but if a person were to start art late like 20's would it be impossible to play catch up in skill to if they started a decade before? Grinding daily in mind with each scenario. Proko's advice to break gestures into C curves, S curves, and I (straight) is something that really resonated with me.

I had a hard time trying to focus on gesture and keep trying to draw contour instead when trying to capture totality but an anon (http://boards.4chan.org/ic/thread/3963218#p3964799)) explained to try and capture volume and that will also help capture the meaning.

You need to learn and get used to the feeling of not looking at your hand, + tablet configuration and screen/tablet size can make the process frustrating.
Gets better but you will feel like a retard first days until you get it.

I would suggest:
> Use "force proportions" on the config
if you don't you will draw a circle in the tablet and an oval will apear on screen, that's cause the screen ratio is different

> Get a tablet of size M at least
the smaller the tablet the shittiest the strokes

> Play around with the pen pressure and settings to work with different size/opacity and try to make it feel natural

> Don't assume you need a shit ton of custom brushes
some pros use the default ones even

no way in hell anyone can get to his understanding of perspective and be able to create such a great sense of depth with weird creatures and landscapes and clouds in just a couple of years

When I say perspective I don't mean simply grabbing a photograph and knowing where the vanishing points go, etc. I mean being able to draw from imagination super complex forms that interpose each other and being able to render in a way that you understand which of those weird forms you've never seen before is far away, whcih one is close, which one is turn side-ways, etc etc, like over here:
>>3966085

Also, pic related. I am currently grinding fundies and studying faces/bodies, I will be a while in that, but if I wanted to do these sort of drawings from imagination what should I practice the most? Is it not advanced perspective? Can one of you niggers that says it's so easy sketch out something like the first pic I quoted real quick?

You guys keep saying it's so easy yet most mangas and comics photobash boring photographed backgrounds, the ones that draw them are squary 2point simple buildings/landscapes.

Because those can be misused obviously. Someone can just make a fake account in the artists' name and use said source files to "prove" to others people that he is that artist and thus try to scam people using the artist's identity. Then there is the artists' trade secrets he is using which he would rather not show to the competition to imitate or use for other materials adding some recolors or overpaints. There is more than enough art poaching around the internet already without that. Then they may have more than a single work in one file because it is practical that way and the do not want to share all works those files could also contain notes. Hampton's all about the energy and flow of the motion, using lines to lead the eye through the pose rather than contour. You've got a good start. My tip for achieving something closer to what he preaches in gesture is focusing first on how things are moving and the perspective lines, if you see something running up draw an upward line. Then identify your C curves and S curves and set those down where you need more clarification. Still, good work anon.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try to keep them in mind. I think my biggest hurdle at the moment is that I don't really know what to when there are a lot of conflicting gestures. For the body I like to base everything off of the waist and elbow relationship, if both of those have a good relationship the legs will be fine at any length within reason (unless you're deliberately making a character with baby legs). For the head I go by the Loomis rule of thirds, that seems like the most appealing and easy way of understanding it. If you really wanna get in depth with porportion do some atudies on the different bones, if you start out with just the bones in the face you're going to understand a lot better. I literally just found out what the maxilla is and it's helping me put the nose, mouth, and eyes into the correct spots with different angles.

And I mean RIGHT FUCKING NOW. Just think about it like this, in 10 years you can have 10 years of experience drawing every single fucking day, or in 10 years you can complain that you didn't start earlier. Just start right fucking now.

You're never too old to start. In fact, since you're older, you'll be more mature and have a better understanding of what you personally need to do to become better. You won't have a retarded ego that gets in the way and makes excuses. You'll know you suck and you'll want to get better. I know people who started when they were 15 and are still shit at your age.

I'm the person who posted that and this is awesome! I would set a goal like drawing at least an hour a day, then increase that to two and so on. As for what I recommend, while it's very boring to start, I highly recommend drawabox:
https://drawabox.com/lesson/0
ESPECIALLY this Lesson 1 section about mark making and drawing decent lines.
https://drawabox.com/lesson/1

When you first start, it's really tempting to "chicken scratch" out little lines in order to make one longer line (like you are doing in your first drawings), but it's a lot better to just get used to drawing from the shoulder and making one quick and smooth stroke, focusing on the strong having good flow instead of good accuracy. It took me like 60 days of drawing before I discovered DrawaBox and my lines became near instantly better. (Pic related) I wish I would have known about it at the beginning.

I highly recommend it. Even just the first Lesson about drawing good lines. You don't have to do the whole thing to begin with, because Drawing Boxes is REALLY boring. I would recommend spending SOME of your time on "improving" and some of your time on drawing what you actually enjoy, otherwise, you'll get burned out fast but be sure to draw EVERY FUCKING DAY. I'm on day 170+ or so right now of drawing every single day and I am a lot better. Looking back at these old drawings for examples was fun.

For starters, the lack of shading can make even good drawings feel flat, really. Defining those shadows is a big part of the 3D feeling, though yours isn't completely flat.
The hand of the pocket could be easily fixed by having the thumb outside, that's how people actually put their hands inside short pockets, and make the pocket bulge since there's a hand inside (just indicate it with a few lines).

Also the neck can't be there. Pay attention, it isn't coming out of the center,it looks like her neck is located in her left side. Ironically the other line you put there is a perfect place for the neck.

Drawing small is a result of being intimidated of a big canvas/paper space, you think big errors are more evident and go small

Symbol drawing is when you don't actually draw what you see, you replace it with an icon/idea you already had in your head

Because portraits are all about capturing a likeness idiot. And to do that, everything has to be proportionally correct even if you draw them in an expressive style. Its not a waste of time when you can literally build a very successful career out of creating portraits as many artists have done.

Use the sight-size technique to make sure you lay down the proportions accurately like John Singer Sargent did. This doesn't mean you're not also "designing" your drawing.

More Loomis studies. At this point I realized I needed to work on perspective because Loomis' way wasn't clicking for me. (Note the fallen NGMI on the far right.)

Started work on Robertson by doing cubes. I hesitated for a long time on Robertson because I couldn't make heads or tails of his explanation of perspective.

My dude, it's a fucking deviantart face that completely ruins everything, her head is also tiny. There's also a bunch of anatomical mistakes, but I don't have time to fix it, so here. I gave her a japanese shadman face and two lines in her bust. It's all I can do with my /beg/ skills.

What's a good way or exercise for drawing proportions correcly?

Currently drawing the pretty women in Fun with a Pencil, but got trouble drawing their faces and bodies correctly.

Somehow you became a professional at coloring before mastering the rest, though you're not that far off. The face is almost correct really, it's just a matter of messing with it for 5 minutes. There should be 1 eye of distance between the eyes and the jaw can't be that straight and pointy and you're set to do Visual Novels

Shiny rendering distracts beginner and non artists from the shitty sketches underneath. It doesn’t that long to learn rendering. I watched a few vids and play around with color and I can make stuff that looks shiny decent. Focus on making your drawing skills decent and rendering will take less than a month to be good at.
