**Don’t aimlessly study the fundamentals or anime. Learn the fundamentals (form, values, color, composition, etc.) through properly copying anime.**

How to study anime/get better at imagination drawing/obtain a style/etc.:
>Find an anime reference you like (an illustration, screenshot, anime figure, 3D model, etc.)
>Find learning material that will help you reconstruct your ref using simpler fundamental elements
>Trace the ref using that construction
>Copy the ref using that construction
>Draw the ref from memory that using construction
>Repeat the process for the same ref multiple times and mix in other refs
>After studying a lot of refs, drawing from your head will become easier

**Focus on Tracing/Copying/Memory drawing the big shapes/values/elements first then later worry about the finer details. Focus on only a portion of a complex ref first then move on to studying the full ref.**

General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I don't know where the mascara ends and the eyelashes begin; they remind me of the drag and drop assets you'd sometimes see in those free to play web flash character designers from over a decade ago. It's almost as if you drew the eyes separately and just plopped them onto a face. Hands are hard; so is the body. Try finding more thick or voluptuous characters to use as reference, dive into your favorite doujins and copy certain panels' stylization after fapping. Anime stylization isn't kind to body positivity, so you'll be hard pressed to find similar looking examples in anime, let alone actual hentai.

I see, thank you for the specifics. I agree now, it is more Western looking than anything. Is it purely the eyes, or does the body shape also contribute? I feel like I've seen much more "exaggerated" proportions on characters that still are very much anime looking. The hair feels like the most anime accurate style, especially the bangs. I wonder if I just changed the eyes would it make it more anime like. But id rather just move on than dwell on this character haha

It seems you are going for appeal. You need to practice making clean line work. And understand how to simplify shapes. This can be achieved through observation and practice. also, based on the placement of the ears and hairline i think you were going for a more tilted down perspective,so i tried to make that more evident. if not, check your measuring again. also as a general tip the neck isn't swooped like you have it, it's generally straight until it meets the trapezius. look at some necks and shoulders if you don't get what i'm saying.

as general advice, i couldn't tell if you were trying to draw from a top down perspective or frontal. your ears and hairline look like they could be positioned for tilted downwards, but the rest of the face is pretty straight on. also, the neck is too curved. it should be pretty straight until it meets the traps.

yeah i noticed it looked pretty retarded after i posted so i wanted to revisit. i think this is somewhat of a better attempt. i tried to emulate the more realistic end of anime styles because the original poster's style is closer to that. ergo proxy and claymore are two i think of when i think of realistic anime.

bruh it looks even worse here. youre constructing the eyes and nose wrong.

If you want to learn anime, use solely Japanese tutorials/books/references anon. Otherwise you will end up with "gaijin anime". It is very distinguishable from something you'd find on Pixiv even if it's very polished and high quality. Unless you want to achieve the Western deviantArt anime look (sasuxxx95, Hyanxx-Natxx), don't do it. I advise you to delete anything Western anime related and replace with Japanese. It might seem extreme, but you will notice a change for better very quickly. Good luck

This is just from one Dunning-Kruger to the next so take this with a grain of salt, but it's not only about the size and proportions of the head, the proportions are fucked all around. Her arms are way too short, her torso is way too long and her legs are way too short. Legs should almost never never be shorter than the torso and if you consider the torso to have a height of 4 generic "units" I've found that the legs should generally land anywhere between 5 or 6. Arms + hands will generally be somewhere between 4.5 and 5 units.

This is my first time drawing from memory, all I ever did was copy art that I liked for the past few months. I don't know any fundamentals or use tricks or lines or anything.
I just drew what felt right until my eyes didn't cry out in pain. Now I know the hair should be rotated clockwise by a little bit, the ear should be bigger and the nose is in the wrong spot and the right pupil is too big but I can only erase so many times on paper. So.. will I ever make it? And yes the hair looks like shit but I can't remember what hair looks like without a reference.

to me the proportions seem ok for a child, it's the head that isn't fit for the body. It has the features of an adult on a child body, which is why it looks so jarring. Eyes remain about the same size for the whole life of a person but the head is smaller so they look bigger and lower in the head. Body fat on the chin is also way too low for a child.

I moved the eyes down and made them bigger and I think it looks better now.

better to use a reference and make it look right and learn from it than draw blindly knowing you don't know what you're doing. "drawing from memory" should be done to practice your knowledge of fundamentals, if you have no guidelines or direction you can't learn from it

i essentially did a bit of drafting using formal linear perspective for a little while. after that, it really improved my handle on form and seeing vanishing points all over the place in real life. it comes down to understanding relationship of the station point (position of the camera) with all the other perspective landmarks. anyway, that experience provided me the tools for perspective problem solving, and it also improved my free hand perspective (which is really the goal). i practically never do formal drafting anymore. i mostly learned from eric olson's nma lectures, and a little bit from scott robertson's book

that aside, it's a good copy. i think you've captured the appeal of the original image quite well. i would really only do anime copies for attempting to replicate style and appeal. i don't think it's a good idea to focus on perspective unless you know the artist has a really good handle on it.

>>3967749
this style of anime doesn't really follow the loomis proportional guide (thirds: brow, nose, chin). i would deconstruct the anime proportions and relationships if you want to replicate this style. i'm not saying that you can't use loomis to draw anime, but rather that you have to take the loomis lessons on form & construction, and adapt it to anime proportions

Good post. No one should view Loomis' textbook head drawing method as the "best" way to draw heads, and I'm pretty sure he says that at some point. The point of much of his teachings is to show you how to break down what you see to using construction lines to understand form and proportions, which everyone does in some form or another.

All I ever do these days is try to copy pictures of qts on Pixiv and 4chan. I can't think of anything interesting to draw on my own. and all i care about is drawing anime girls as depressing as that sounds. Even shittier, if I even attempt to draw an OC of mine the result looks even more trash without any reference to look at while drawing it.

I'm not sure what im supposed to do. I just have no creativity. I dont think you can help with that. But should i keep grinding Pixiv faces every day or should I study how to color or something else?

You can't just copy if you want to eventually learn to draw from imagination, you have to practice drawing from memory too. While you do your copies think about things like facial proportions and stylistic features. After copying those faces try redrawing them without looking at the references, trying to remember the major points. This should help you start drawing your OCs without reference. Once you can draw simple anime faces from imagination you should have more motivation and confidence, so start studying anatomy and other fundamentals so you can draw more than just faces from that angle.

i would construct the eyes properly before heading into detail. break it down into a basic shape so you can mirror it. and then you can mirror it in perspective. details can be added later when it looks like things are in the right place.

another thing that stood out to me is the head -> neck connection. one tip is to remember that there's a muscle (sternocleidomastoid) that runs from the bottom of the ear into the meeting of the collarbones.

hey /asg/

A couple of months back, somebody posted a link to a Japanese online manga school. It had a similar subscription model to Pencil Kings etc, where you pay $20 or $30 each month, and can stream as many courses as you want. The twist was that all the teachers were Japanese, but the videos came with English subtitles. You know, like, schoolism for weebs.

I bookmarked it back then, but I think I deleted the folder the bookmark was in.

All I can remember is that the website had something like a teal and orange color scheme... or there was orange in the name? I'd like to sign up for a short while as I want to up my manga skill a little, but mainly because I want to listen to Japanese people talk about drawing for my Japanese language study.

Thanks guys & gals, I really appreciate it.

stop opening your hand with kan and chii, nyagger.

drawing from life helps a lot, photo studies, seeing how materials work. find artists you want to paint like and study from them. turn the images black and white and make it read in greyscale so you can learn how they handle edges. honestly drop the soft brush altogether for a while and only work in opaque so you can work on designing better shapes. a lot of eastern art you see is going to be just cel-shaded. better shapes will carry your painting, not how smooth you can blend gradients. limit yourself to something like a 70% hard round for skin and that's it. practice good shapes (and those hands) and then worry about rendering

look at bridgman, huston, and loomis. once you spot the construction shape it's easy to abstract away and notice on even the most subtle anime shit. after the nose it's philtrum, upper lip, top of lower lip, front of lower lip, recedes under lip, goes out again to point of chin and back under. hope this helps, stuck with mouse for now. but it works for any person and doing anime or not, all that matters is playing with proportions.
