Tbqh this looks quite nice. Most important face is perfect. If I wanted the nitpick it would be the area near the neck and shoulder is all smudgy and looks like you gave up shading it. Get a mask layer and colour all the black lines so they are brown or something. Looks jarring esp on right girl’s boob. Also add a round of specular highlights so the skin doesn’t look so matt and flat (you clearly know how to do this on the eyes so I am assuming this is lazyness), the boobs need this.

Oh, it's because of the style, I'm trying to follow NPA's rendering technique. Unlike artists like Bacius (right side) who like to put a lot of speculars/hightlights on the skin, to make it shiny, glossy, oily.... NPA on the other hand always avoid to use them. Both pictures is very appealing in their own way, but personally I prefer NPA's style.

I aslo never claimed that I'm good at drawing, just want to clarify that I didn't trace.

I did use constructive drawing, with the first picture as pose guidelines, and measured body's proportions of the 2nd and 3rd pictures to apply into my drawing.

I can draw gesture from imagination just fine, not good, not bad, but it'll be nowhere near the level and quality of top tier artists. I want to make it as fast as possible, not like some NGMI fags here, so it's better to straight forward learn from masters and follow they footsteps. Soul or souless, doesn't fucking matter to me.

Using references is perfectly fine, I do it, Pros do it, you do it. But that's on another level, copying a pose straight from another artist isn't the same as using refs for things you need help with.

I'm well aware of it, the quality of my works would drop at least 30% if I don't use ref. Pics are some I drew without using pose/gesture refs, they're stiff, unatural and awkward and make me feel the artblock, stagnancy, even question myself why I did it.

Usually people who can only copy from photos have a hard time actually drawing from real life because unlike photos, the reference isn't flatten to a 2d image. But the OP may or may not be able to copy from real photo references well either. It's easier to copy a pose an artist already drew and simplified than try to figure out the anatomy, gesture, and perspective, from a real photo.

A lot of artists get by fine with this though. Just look at pixiv under the "ポーズ集" tag. You can see a ton of free, already draw poses, created by artists that highly encourage other artists to copy and use them. It's faster than trying to Google for a specific reference often

What you just said really goes against how every old master learned in the past 600 years. There's no better way to learn than to learn from someone whose already got it figured out. The Renaissance happened because of the rediscovery of ancient greek art and sculpture - and they did everything they could to learn how the ancients designed their figures - poses like contrapposto, idealized proportion, anatomy, and features, which meant a lot of copying. Michelangelo's David is a modified contrapposto pose that he seen and copied from so many examples of ancient greek sculpture.

My point is that most of the famous artists in history mimiced the art before them in order to learn how to create something similar of their own design. I bet if you sat down and tried constructing a pose in your mind and then drawing it, that would look better than what you produced using that ref because that ref is already wonky looking.

As a general rule if you want to use ref for anatomy, you should only ever consult actual photographs or video of real people. Only use other artists work as rendering or style guide. Otherwise you run the risk of adopting their mistakes into your own art and then adding your own mistakes on top. If you use real pictures as ref you don't run that risk and everything wrong with the end result will be easily identifiable as your own mistake to learn from.

When using anatomical ref you should also make sure that your ref uses a different pose than what you are actually drawing so that you use the ref as a tool for understanding instead of just copying. Only that way will you be able to leave ref behind as you get along further. You need to understand an arm to draw it without looking at it, you need to kinda understand it to look at an arm and be able to draw it in a different position BUT you need no understanding whatsoever to just copy something exactly as you see.

Worse, if you do that over and over, you train yourself to not be able to draw anything without looking at ref. That's how you end up like PROKO when he tried to draw a kangaroo from his imagination alone and ended up with a hilarious abomination.
