I was planning on making one of these threads. I saw ModeSeven archiving his art and decided to do it myself so I have something to look back on. Trying to organize by date rather then just throw shit in a folder and try to remember when it was made. That way I can see the progression...I need to draw more holy fuck.

I prefer the old portrait. It has a more natural nose and lip shape, nose bridge indication and a pleasing patch of shade under the lower lip. The features are also better angled and positioned. Looks like old manga, pic related. The right seems like an elongated shoujo manga face by comparison, the small indentations at the mouth edges are gone and it's widened.

Granted, I loved drawing the first one and hated drawing the second. I did not design the costumes and was really constrained with the alien design (had to have three legs, be very large, carry them, webbed hands I think too)

Still....its really hard to find anything I like that I've made lately. My favorites are from way in the past.

Is that something you've always held or is it based on how people have responded to you work? I see your progress pic posted around on other boards sometimes and typically see people say the same.

Personally I think it's all great, not that you regressed just that you got to a really good cruising altitude.

Sounds like my experience with fighting games.

I have set a low bar for myself. If I can get as good as Zun (pic related) or Kruggsmash (Dwarf Fortress let's player) it will be "good enough" that I will do it with some regularity.

btw some advice I found recently for fighting games is if you feel you have stagnated as a player, you should learn a new character.

The composition on 2019 makes me think that after 2018, you began to understand the basic shapes and overall form of the human face. I can tell it was a quicker draw, which is- in it's own right- an improvement, and I'd like to see a current drawing with more detail and shading added. The most obvious jump in quality is the nose, Monika looks like a fukken toucan on the left.

Are you spending more time on one figure instead of performing several quick sketches? It seems that you invest more time and effort on one piece, you're at the point where you should be drawing multiple figures focusing on executing a concept, and gesture. The more quick sketches and gesture drawings you do the more in tune you would be in proportion, anatomy, and most importantly the fluidity and grace of a figure.

Also perform some master studies from an artist who is competent in painting, not going to tell you from who since there's too many snowflakes in this board.

Why is are all your work so dark and have to be ugly though? Is this the only thing you can draw? I used to draw a lot of similar stuff when I was younger but I realized sure I could draw dark shit all day, but you also have to balance it out with the beautiful and hopefull. Life and reality itself is a mix of the horrific and utterly beautiful. Characters themselves have to also be a mix and feel different emotions and moods not just one. It's hard as fuck to change your style or what you feel like you want to draw because we like to think our art is a just a mirror of ourselves, but sometimes our art can also teach us how to grow or what we should aspire to.

If I were you and if you are serious about growing as an artist, care less about your line work and try challenging yourself to draw new themes you haven't done before. That's the real test of growth and improvement. It might just change you to see new things you haven't considered before.

Speaking as a professional, the 2018 peice is the best work out of the ones you showed. Cocnept wise it is more advanced and tells more of a story. My advice to improve on that picture is try to use more colour tones and a wider pallet. Nothing wrong with subdued gray colours, but judging from your other works that's all you can currently do. That makes the mood very monotone. Try to mix it up a bit and dare to use colours you never tried before. Pick some colours at random and see if you can pull it off.

You got soul I can feel and potential, but you have to learn to open your mind and heart to really push the boundaries of what you think you can do. I have seen quite a few guys who couldn't draw for shit, but they had the ability to make art and be pro because they could draw multiple characters from any perspective and mood because they are able to simply imagine it. Then I have also seen some guys who were master drawers, but they were one trick ponys. They don't last long unless it's EXACTLY what people(studio, market, investors, fans, target audience, etc) are looking for. Who would hire a musician who could only play one song? Better be a damn good song that's for sure.

You want to know the secret of great character design? It's being able to imagine and draw how other people feel even though it's not what you always feel or want to. By imagining that other view, you also make it become a part of your world. Learn to grow your world, not shrink it or have a narrow view of it. It will make you much more dynamic. That just more information then just face proportions.

Wish I could summarize neatly, I don't have a method and I'm largely just self teaching. The tl;dr is I drew a bunch of anime girls and successively tried to do better in manageable ways. Sometimes I'd check the foreshortening with a cg model, sometimes I'd use about 20 references. I had no idea how to draw muscle at all so I opened and anatomy chart and drew out all the muscles over a figure. Stuff like that. I guess it's just largely challenge oriented, since I was trying to learn painting, figures, anatomy, perspective and all that largely holistically. Seems like if you improve at some of this stuff with figures or characters your background skills improve too, it's just building a mental library of whatever you wanna be able to do. I wouldn't recommend trying to imitate whatever I'm doing because to be frank, I have no idea what I'm doing.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I think all my work has the same dark tone because I tend to listen to darksynth when I draw, because I like the energy of it. I guess I should vary the music I listen to, and try to work on my proportions more. Maybe actually having more backgrounds would help too.

I'm going to keep this in mind as I draw, see if I can get any different or better results. If this thread is still up by the time I've made any more satisfactory work, I'll post it here to see if you think I got any better.

Hey you're that femboy dude
I can tell you that one way or another you're probably my favourite artist on /ic/, there's a few pieces I see there where I didn't even realize it's your stuff but still loved them.
Take it from me, you've gotten A LOT better. Just comparing '18 and '17, you're colour choices and costumes have gotten pretty top notch.

>my stuff will never be as good as my favorite artists...
I don't know what your end goal is but I can tell you, it's probably not your technical skill holding you back. I think at some point you said you liked JJurion, so I suppose you're comparing yourself to him (and others).
Thing is, those guys are pros who've been drawing for decades now, or even at what was possibly your age.

Like I said, I don't know what your end-goal is (commissions, comics, concept art, etc..) but I can guess that you're more than good enough for a running start.
Get a blog, interact with the community, build a following, STOP NUKING IT, and then do whatever you want with it.

a real finished piece, not in the last 3.5 years. When i started thinking about painting. The transition to painting made it so that i never wanted to finish a piece anymore ( i used to cel-shade and do anime). Nowadays its a conflict of patience and interest that causes me not to end things. Youll notice that i have a few incomplete paintings, but beyond that, every one of them has 10 different color schemes in their original files were i go a bit crazy. Once my painting skills get closer to where i want them my pieces will start being completed too.

I don't want to sound too mean, but dude, you really need to be honest with yourself. You have solid fundies, but I have no idea where I'm supposed to be seeing improvement. Even disregarding the face everything here is a sketch, 80% of what you're doing are just bland neutral headshots. There's some slight anatomical improvements in >>3947191
compared to the previous, but other than that there's not a lot.
You're comfort zoning really really really hard right now. You draw faces over and over again and are avoiding stuff like full bodies, environments, color, and inking. Learning to be comfortable in any one of these topics would improve your art and make it immensely more appealing to look at, cause frankly a page of half-finished face sketches just isn't interesting to look at.
>>3947210
Finishing stuff and making stuff look presentable is a skill that can be learned and improved, and by avoiding it you're only hurting yourself. By that I don't mean you have to render the shit out of everything you do, but you should try to make it look good and have a unique point to it. Look at famous artist's sketchbooks, the stuff in pic related isn't completed, but it has a unique point to it: showing us character designs and giving us an impression of their personalities. Why are you showing us random profiles you draw 4 times over? This is not to say you shouldn't do repetitive studies, but you should do drawings that look interesting and have a point to them as well.
I think you have a lot of potential, but I think you're just failing to push yourself to do more.

Yeah, and you've been barely improving in those areas. If you really want to get better with your shapes and line design, do some character design or environment design. Challenging yourself to apply the knowledge will teach you more than drawing the same face over and over again. If you wanna get better at forms, try rendering a sketch so you can understand how light wraps around it instead of drawing bald chicks over and over again. You're practicing a lot, but you're learning nothing from it. You need to change something about the art you make if you wanna do something about it.

Progress from since when I graduated highschool (class of '15). I've thoroughly enjoyed painting - but I feel my trajectory and interests are going back to what I was more interested in middle school/late elementary. I want to get back into anime as I've been reading shonen manga - however, I fear that would jeopardize my chances of a good portfolio for editorial work (book covers, pamphlets, etc) I also have an interest in character design, but my skills in that department as just beginning to grow. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Your stuff looks alright, but I think you aren't improving much since 2016 because your stuff is pretty unambitious. Through all your pieces I see one full body, and one with both characters and a background. This really gives me the impression you aren't pushing yourself. You have some solid color and decent painting skills, but you're only doing easy and simple subjects, mainly portraits. It would help you a lot I feel to start doing some drawings with figures placed in backgrounds/environments doing stuff, because that will probably take you out of your comfort zone and help you figure out your weaknesses more easily, and be able to confront them and improve from there.

That's what I was thinking - I need to build up more knowledge of dynamic composition, warped perspective, etc. Having my figures interacting in various poses is something I've been working on in my sketchbook for sometime.
