Dunno if this is the right thread for this but here goes. Not really a style, just an idea I had today.

I started off by making a simplified human face using black squares. Then I projected the X-axis positions of the squares onto a line where an odd number of overlapping lines makes red, while none or an even number gives cyan.

The resulting red/cyan line is my very own: binary, one-dimensional portrait.

I would like to experiment further by finding ways to implement a Y-axis(which isn't working too well in this example as the symmetrical eyes simply cancel each other out), making more types of faces and adding more detail to them, using more colors and effects, as well as making up entirely new approaches for a similar result.

That pillow shading you got going on due to you throwing a gaussian blur over your linework is really holding you back. I would also suggest being more comfortable with shading in general, as you're placing your shadows very deliberately to the point I feel you spent an unnecessarily long time on that aspect of the drawing.

Nah I actually spent like 5-10 minute tops on it. I didn't really try very hard with the shading. I get your point though, I could have done better. Overall felt pretty unhappy with the result, but for a mindless doodle it was alright? Extra bummed at myself because I'm usually really proud of my shading and do much better work with it. One day I'll git gud even with small doodles.

You have to study the different types of clothing and get really good at rendering the flow of fabric.

Looking at Hideo Minaba.. His characters wear very decorated costumes - layers of stylized clothing of different kinds, accessories and pieces of armor.

Look at the characters and behind all of the flashy accessories and decoration you'll see the real world items of clothing he's stylizing from - dresses, skirts, leggings, cloaks, jackets, gauntlets, belts, boots, etc. etc. Its not all invention. All pieces of item that are common in fantasy art and are based on real world clothing.The invention comes from how he stylizes them, adds detail to them and puts them together to design a character.

Honestly, I don't see much issue with it, besides the facial features being placed a little weird. The left leg also seemed a little short. I like it though, the lines are very clean.

wondering if anything stands out as bad, or if something i did is visually unappealing in general? i'm concerned mostly about the little dark borders between the light and dark, i thought they would look kind of cool but i really can't tell if they detract from it, would like an unbiased perspective.

You can use layer settings to do things like this. Things like having a layer set to "merge" or "darken" can allow shadows and highlights on separate layers. You also can change capacities, link layers, do masking and other things that can allow higher layers to change lower ones.
