It varies a huge, huge amount. You can be a "professional" and only do paid work occasionally on the side of your day job, and make under $5,000 a year from it. One could start to find their stride and start to monetize their work through a variety of different outlets, and make a $25k-$50k just fine. Well established illustrators can definitely pull in between $50-100,000. Business savy artists could definitely pull in more.

The key thing to remember is that being an illustrator is a lot more entrepreneurial than people realize. You alone are in charge of the opportunities that you get. No one is going to magically hand you $60,000/yr just because you call yourself a "professional illustrator". Networking and connecting with clients is a crucial part of it. If you're able to get into the perspective that you're essentially a 1-man business - and you treat it as such - then you'll be much better off.

Can i get some tips on why it seems so hard to get patrons? Is my stuff just not interesting? I spend months working on pics just to get 1 or 2 patrons that leave after a few days. Meanwhile others spend a few days on something and have tons of followers. I've learned alot, but i'm stll very slow. I try to add quality to every pic adding in small details and making it as nice as i can, but it just seems like it doesn't matter, and that nobody notices anyways. It honestly feels like i'm just spinning my wheels. Is my stuff just bad or am i not putting it out fast enough?

You are not even remotely creating and publishing work fast enough. Once every few MONTHS is outrageous.

Can you create a finished piece in a few hours? A day or two? If no, why not?

You need to reevaluate your workflow significantly. You need to be able to make work faster. This may mean you make some changes to your style, but so be it.

Success in art is generally more about making the RIGHT work, not the BEST work. In other words, a piece that you made in 3 hours can resonate just as much or as less as a piece you spent 3 months on. The more work you're able to pump out, the more valuable you are as a content creator. You need to up those numbers.

If you're a complete or semi literally who (0-500 followers) then there is no reason for you to not have an instagram acc, the site's algorithm is far more superior at sharing your stuff to other people as opposed to Twitter or Tumblr (there is a reason why there are arists with nearly 200k on Insta and barely 20k on Twatter)
the only downside to the site as far as I know is the way it forces you to crop out your images which isn't a big deal for me personally but still, can be a little annoying

I've tried going on it, but it really does feel like a site for little kids. The average art level is low, so it's easy to stand out if you try, but it's very based around socialization and community. Only use it if you're the kind of person who likes chatting it up with little kids.

I usually just downsize everything to 800/900 pixels. Everyone will just look at your paintings via phones and not more than two seconds. So why bother.

I have no doubt that you are ready to jump into it right now.

I've personally gotten my foot in the door with editorial jobs. There's really no 'trick' to it beyond just going for it. I'm not entirely sure how editorial magazines, newspapers & other publications work in Poland, but I'm sure you'd be able to find regional publications to contribute to. It's also common to work internationally on other countries publications.

My two pieces of advice that you can start doing immediately:
1.) Consider setting up a real, dedicated portfolio site (like Squarespace, wix, Weebly, etc.) - any site where you can really showcase a curated look at your best work. Your social media sites are very clean and all full of great stuff, but a curated portfolio site with your own URL is just a bit more professional.

2.) Start making a list of magazines or papers that you would want to work for. Make it organized (I like to use a spreadsheet), and always be looking out for new publications that you think you'd be a good fit for. Once you have your list, go ahead and get the names & emails of the art directors or creative directors that work there. You can usually find this on the first few pages of the publication, or on their website. Once you have these names + emails, you can email them to 1. Express your explicit interest in working with them and 2. Link to your portfolio website. Keep it short, personable (never just copy/paste the same message), and simple.

That's it. If your work is good and the art director likes you, they'll keep you in mind for future projects. Most of the time you'll just not get any response, but that's okay - don't take it personally! Just keep emailing and promoting your work directly to art directors. I think you'd be surprised how far a friendly, simple email that shares your portfolio can take you.

Thank you anon, I actually do have a real Squarespace portfolio, but it's mostly geared towards my current career as an illustrator for motion graphics. I get editorial gigs once in a blue moon (or literally once in my whole freelance career) and to make a full switch I think I'd need to make more editorial works of a better quality. I will try to make some time to work on this during the summer. And I will save your post!

I don't get that. There are alot of pin-up type artists making alot of money that do slight variations of the same standing poses cut off at the thigh over and over with blurred photos for backgrounds or sloppy painting with bad edges, bad proportions...then they slap monster tits and anime faces on it and people eat it up. It makes no sense. Does everyone just hate western style faces? Would i get more attention with ayyyy faces?

I went for a walk and sketched the view and recorded it with my camera. With me was the canvas from my attempt at painting the landscape from a few years back , it didn't progress past a light wash. Now that I have some zinc white I can finally begin again and I've blanked out most of the prior sketch and have set the composition anew. And the very same day I was overcome by flu. I am aching and not in the mood to paint, quite weak.
