**If you make good copies of anime *properly*, you will be able to draw good anime. If you make bad copies of anime or bad anime styled drawings from photos, you will get better at drawing bad anime. Please think carefully about how you are studying.**

This is the thread for:

1. Posting your anime studies:
>Copy exactly but don’t do it aimlessly. Integrate drawing concepts (construction, color theory, tracing, etc.) into your studies in order to pull information from the reference (anime art, figurines, tutorials) that you can later use for your original work.
>Do a single study multiple times to ensure you address all of your mistakes and memorize the correct process in your head. Attempt drawing it from memory as well.
>You will only be able to effectively deviate from your reference after doing exact copy studies accurately and consistently.
2. General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

>> No.3919826

>>3919812
you're getting crabbed. yes you can get by with the pictures just fine. western anatomy is what all the japanese look to anyway with things like loomis, ham, etc. fundamentals and anatomy with stuff like steve huston/hampton/whatever and then the style with anime books.

>> No.3919834

>>3919826
So do you think I should look into Loomis, etc.? Or am I fine with just the Japanese books? Also what are the essential books in the mega in your opinion?

Also if it changes anything, I just want to do good fanart of characters I like, and just emulate the style of the original artist.

>> No.3919843

Just download everything and sample what you think is useful. Shits free, and it takes up little space. goddamn. You should skim through a book in ten minutes to learn whats inside and then decide if you want to really study from it.

>> No.3919847

>>3919834
yes but also what the other guy said, you should be able to look through a book and figure out it's something you want to learn or not. steve huston, hampton, vilppu drawing manual, jack hamm, and loomis in terms of instructional drawing books (loomis is actually more intermediate and i wouldn't recommend to a beginner). you can sample from japanese stuff but you'll realize most constructions boil down from a loomis type of construction. what you want to get from these books is a basic construction of head and the body/mannekin. i don't know your level. sample them all and see what sticks the most with you.

The blurb on the page this is from says when your knowledge is higher you do more drawings to boost your skill level.

If your skill is higher than your knowledge, then reading more books to boost your knowledge level.

The reason why the gap can be bad is not being aware of it in the first place. Using the magic example the witch is still assuming her magic is level 3, so she feels like her magic is weaker than others when in reality it's because of the gap between knowledge and skill.

line weights are really distracting, especially how thick joints are. a lot of tangents, juicebox arm is completely flat shapes because you have no hint of overlapping, her right leg is kinda over-rounded and elastic. similar problem with right leg as juice arm where it's completely flat but also isn't consistent anatomically with the pose. no other way to decsribe but bug-eyed: her right eye seems skewed the wrong way and too big. it should be less "deformed" and more like her left eye. cover up half the face with your hand, then cover up the other half and see if you can tell what i mean. really fat cheek, draw some real faces.

>>3920338
same distracting line weights problem. his left arm looks flat and broken. the cheek on her face in this angle is much more appropriate of a shape than the solo portrait. table perspective is completely different. are you using csp and drawing over 3d models or something?

>>3920346
this gives the impression of an image copied from a really distorted picture. his head seems like it's distorted in a wide angle photo/selfie. learn some basic arm muscle anatomy to make the forearms not look like fat tubes. feels like escher with the perspective of the upper and lower bodies not matching, even left to right side of the body. the right arm shouldn't be doing what it's doing in the upper part and still be able to touch the inner thigh let alone that close to the knee. do you have any construction of your drawings?

I'd say so. That's a nice shading you got going for the hair!
The head seems too large though, and there's something bothering me about the neck.
The hair strand next to the neck is causing a tangent, which confuses the reader and makes him read shapes that aren't there.
For example, due to that tangent, the stray line you left in the neck's shading makes it look like the neck is very tiny.
Which might not be that noticeable to some but when you see it, it can be confusing.

Hmm... I think the wrinkles on the clothes could use some work, as at the moment it just looks like you randomly placed lines instead of actually considering how drapery looks like. Try adding more detail around the pinches of the clothes (armpits, boobs etc.) You should also try adding folds around where the clothing hugs her skin, like pic related.

In every work I see even from a worm's eye the head is always tilted forward to avoid drawing the chin recessing into the neck.

thank you for the reply! yes the fundamentals have been very helpful especially at deconstructing a face that I see in any style. It makes you think of it in a different way and how you would draw it in a more concrete manner. One thing I noticed with the more cute anime style is that the sliced off side section of the loomis ball is much smaller, making the plane for the eyes wider than normal, to make room for their exaggerated size.

Why does the construction/ anatomy of girls on places like /h/ or /e/ seem generally better than somewhere like /c/ ? I'm still really new to drawing and I started Fun With a Pencil a few days ago but I saw this screenshot from Kill la Kill and noticed the glasses guy in the bottom left's head is built pretty much the same way as the basic cartoon heads at the beginning of the book. His head is a rounded pill-ish shape, his cheeks are two big ovals, his chin is half a circle, etc. You can construct it exactly like Loomis says to do, just with the proportions a bit different. I know it's not exactly a cute anime girl but it's still unmistakably anime. Sorry if this is stupid or obvious to anyone, I'm just excited that I already found a way to apply this to something I like.

Ah fair enough, didn't see that anon. And I think I see where you're coming from, but I still feel you could've used a bit of crosshatching to imply that shadow instead of a heavy line, like the one you did for the throat, otherwise it looks like her jawbone continues way past the chin and curves towards the throat.
Maybe the rest of what I said is the hairs fault, but that's on anime hair, shit doesn't really make sense It's okay, I'm a beginner so I'm probably way off and you can take with a big, fat rock of salt.

not him, but pretty much. in that game they hardly ever show under chin and actively frame poses not to. that's not an angle you should see in the game unless you're changing the angle with cheat engine. most of the shading in the game is just a regular thing you see for anime which would be the darker skin tone. for materials, gg uses just 3 colors which are mid tone, shadow tone, and highlight tone so the rest of under her chin should be shadow. however the lights for that pose aren't set up to show shadow because you're not supposed to see under.

I love inking, it’s my favorite part of drawing. I used to just stop at pencil sketches because my inking made the sketch lifeless, but I started drawing in only pen and it really helped with line economy.

I also used to be afraid of ruining my sketch by inking over it, but I learned not to get so attached. Also, go to completion every time: Sketch > ink > color and your process will speed up.

Tldr - mileage?

I bought it (and its follow-up on character designs) a while back but I wouldn't be able to scan it in non-potato quality and I'm not really keen on taking the pages apart for clean scans. Is there anything particular in the book you would like to see?

It's not really that useful of a book in my opinion, it only really explores invoking animal traits in character designs and poses. The introductory pages and the first third of the meat of the book by YANAMi is stellar with lots of "x-ray"-style anatomical diagrams and explanations, but the other two artists are fairly amateurish and don't really teach much. The kimono drawing book and YANAMi's assorted Pixiv tutorials in the mega in the OP has the same types of diagrams (some are the exact same!) so if nothing else you could study those.
