I like it, it's very cozy.
I have a few thoughts on it though, if I'm missing something feel free to ignore this post.
-The light behind the waterfalls looks like it's outside. If so, I'm guessing this place is the exit?
-The overgrowth just kind of leads into what looks like a normal hallway.
-The statues seem to be made out of some ambiguous material. I was thinking maybe bronze, since they stand out from the stone so much (and I figure stone would erode under a waterfall)
-The water towards the top looks quite fast, but relatively still at the bottom of the image. It may be because it's unfinished though.

If I didn't mention anything else, it's because I already like it.
One thing you could add is maybe a branch/vine or something to connect the foreground to the rest of the image a bit more.

Overall this is some concept piece for a place I imagine for a project.

>The light behind the waterfalls looks like it's outside. If so, I'm guessing this place is the exit?
I thought of it more than an entrance area to a much bigger place so yeah, It's a kind of exit.
>The overgrowth just kind of leads into what looks like a normal hallway.
That's the entrance to the real thing, not sure if I'll let it bright or have it descend into the darkness, probably the latter
>The statues seem to be made out of some ambiguous material. I was thinking maybe bronze, since they stand out from the stone so much (and I figure stone would erode under a waterfall)
Honestly I didn't think too much about the material and its behavior with water more than there are plants growing on it. I think for bronze it could need a rosè-colored shine on it. Not sure what it is though, maybe I'll draw some patterns on it, it's a fantasy world after all
>The water towards the top looks quite fast, but relatively still at the bottom of the image. It may be because it's unfinished though.
Ah yeah, the water hitting the bottom is what I try to figure out currently, It would create a lot of tension on the surface but I don't want to draw too much attention into the shadowy zones. A bit of bad planning right there
>One thing you could add is maybe a branch/vine or something to connect the foreground to the rest of the image a bit more.
Definitely wanted to try this, too. I threw in the foliage in the foreground to work with that later and block out areas that don't need exessive rendering but I will connect some of them to the middleground for sure

Glad to hear that anon, even though I think I still haven't touched my potential yet. And thanks!

>Do you have any tips ?
Definitely perspective, which I still lack desu. Also, study environments, my go to practice is taking two environment refs (or three when you're ambitious) and combining their traits in one image. Or make different environment sketches from them. This time to study them while also doing imaginative work.
Also, build an environment folder. I would share a link to mine but I'm not sure how linking Dropbox is treated here.

Don't worry about the result, only about understanding what you're doing, observing, not going into autopilot, and doing many many many.
This applies to anything you wanna learn really. Don't be too harsh on yourself but try to practise as much as you can every day.
I'd advise against posting questions like that naively hoping someone will reply with some super secret to drawing eyes. My workflow is pretty abysmal, I just splash blocks of paint until it looks like something useful and start thinking about perspective and lighting alignment etc much later. I didn't really have the ambition for a complex scene but these days I try to be patient and refine things as much as I can. This has been laying around for several months but wasn't worked on for long stretches... I didn't keep track but I'd be surprised if I spent less than 75-100 hours, a lot of weekends and lazy workdays went by.

I did everything by hand as I prefer that look, but Paintstorm has a good perspective tool that lets you move vantage points into a neighboring country, which is necessarily for that long focal length look. It only works for two axes so the rest have to be done by hand. Artstudio has a better brush engine for details so I moved back and forth a lot between the two apps. Reference was only really needed for the window glass, water ripples, some scooter ideas and how to paint wet pants. Oh, and the bent sign pole was lifted from my own neighborhood. There used to be a lamp on there.

Do you have a reference for this? Cause I can spot a couple of mistakes but I don't know if some of it might be correct copying or not. Definitely the left cheekbone and/or the whole left side of the face seems too far to the left )speaking from our perspective). But worst of all is the nose, it looks like its crooked to the left, and the bridge (the front where the light hits) is way too thin especially where it comes to the point. All this makes it look like her face is not symmetrical even though her face is turned away. But overall it looks nice, I like the feeling and the atmosphere of it. You've done a nice job of the flower and her lips. I think you could erase some of the light tones and highlights more which would create more contrast and make the dark tones look darker, but it depends on whether she's in a shadow which it looks like here. Overall most of your focus should be on proportion and perspective.

For graphite drawing try using a 6-8B, keep the point very sharp, and put a lot of layers on and avoid pressing on the paper. <ayne try out cretacolor nero pencils for darker tones, or if you know how to control charcoal, use charcoal pencils, pierre noire or carbone (all from conte a paris)

You need to delineate between materials more. Is the military mount wearing cloth or hard materials on its head? Why would it need hard armor if it appears to be made of scales? And if that is head armor then the beast can no longer move its head. Something more interesting than generic armored beast would be swaddling a mount in cloth, because if you're covered in scales then the next damage you need to resist is blunt trauma, not sharp weapons

The expression is soulless not in the soul/soulless ic debate but in a "there is nothing behind that bitch's eyes its like a dementor sucked her off and now she's just a husk"
her expression should have some asymmetry to it, at the very least her head should be tilted up or down to convey superiority/aggression.

Your values are too close together. There are no noticeably dark shadows where there could be to add interest, atmosphere and contrast. This piece could be very cool if you added more soft shadows to pull off a chiaroscuro effect.

For example you could make the background, especially around the character's head, much darker to really create a sense of luminosity on the on his face. Perhaps leave only a 3rd of his body directly in the light while the rest recedes into shadow or just occasionally catches light.

Other posters have speculated that you're going for a Ruan Jia look. Kind of looks like it, so learn from how he uses light and shadows:

they both think these asian artists use one method/brush of rendering when in fact if you ever looked at their processes and tut images, they use a plethora, the MAIN problem both of them have is that they DONT use a soft brush like RJ or guang do, you will never get a soft stroke with a textured brush, or a hard edge not matter how many times you try to soften it up by repeating strokes, but you could maybe with something inbetween thats why RJ sometimes uses a sponge with a fairly soft edge. either way lighting is completely off, colors are random and dull, no control of contrast for light or color, its just a very very dull image to look at, especially with the ugly edges.

I've seen RJ paint. I know what his process is. So don't bullshit me with this "RJ rarely uses a soft textured brush" nonsense. You don't have a clue what you're talking about or who you're peddling it to.

>> No.3908963

>>3908941
dude no, you have no concept of what ambient light is, all youre doing with every single painting you make is that you have this linear projection of light coming from one side and rendering it that way for the entire model.

like nigga look at your painting, you literally have light going from light to dark:left to right, that kind of linear flow of light is only apparent if its very soft light like ambient in which case this is not what youre trying to illustrate here, youre going for that cast shadow light that does the complete opposite of ambient, it makes the darker part of light going in the middle aka the so called terminator shadow which is what most chinese abuse because its simple lighting. accompanied by soft ambient light. the reason those kind of cast shadows are so good is because it balances the lighting out since its not linear, it makes the light on one side lighter BASED on the reflections of ambient light, so it will never be lighter than the side thats lit. if youu look at >>3908651 theres not a single spot on that image that has a dark outer edge of that figure because the light is not linear like yours, its brimming with soft light and you can see terminator shadows everywhere, and if youre going for just ambient light, then you dont ADD a spot light, so no cast shadows would be present but there will still be a falloff so light can still define volume, aka ambient occlusion which is a fancy word for shadows so dont over think that word like most people do it just means you need to account for how soft those shadows are and where they happen because they can be incredibly soft.
>>3908954
>I'm doing what I like, because it literally does not fucking matter what brush anyone uses.

Alright, let's break this down as simple as it can get.

This illustrates the kind of lighting I aim for in most of my paintings. Pretty basic, but I fail to see what's wrong with it.

Second, as you can see, I've rendered a sphere with my favorite chalk brush and then again with a clip mask and a soft round. Which one you like better is totally subjective. But I'm waiting for you to explain why they're both demonstrably bad for some reason or another.

As you can see, my focus is on form, and directional light. Why? Because I'm starting simple in learning form and light. It makes no sense for me to tackle ambient lit subjects when I haven't mastered single-point lighting yet. Gotta walk before you can run. because this is not what simple light looks like. you are combining two different light methods into one and calling it simple. thats just wrong. you have a fucking CAST SHADOW. simple light is a simple cast shadow, which a simple cast shadow consists of 4 fucking elements, a light side, a dark side, a cast shadow and reflected light and as a consequence of this reflected light(which u dont have in your pic related btw) makes a terminator shadow which you see in my pic related the terminator shadow is the darkest part now, and the reflected light is the shadow of the ball. that is simple lighting. the other lighting set up is far easier tho, its not casting shadows its basically overcast lighting, so its all soft shadows because the subject is mostly lit by ambient light.

I can see where you went with the alterations and it is easier on the eyes, but I'm concerned about the "pop" you wanted- if you wanted one. The red has a vibrant effect that jumps out and the revision is nicely subdued, adding almost a mischievous naughty smile. If that's what you were going for then great. Looking at them both side by side the color shift sends two different messages. Art is crazy.

You do realize that the spheres I was rendering have a very rough surface, right? Which makes the light and shadow transitions very soft.

Your egg example has gloss on it, which makes the shadow transitions a bit more firm. The gloss also means that it will pick up reflections more distinctly. So the reflected light in the shadow is sharper and more visible. That's not what reflected light would look like on a matte material sphere.

Do my paintings have issues? Yeah. But man, talk to me like a person. Being a condescending dickbag just means I have to filter through a lot of your tedious bullshit to get any insight from you.

Yet you can't intelligently articulate why they're shit. I mean, I agree with you. I'm harder on myself than you could ever be. But you telling me that I don't understand the principle of rendering light on a sphere because I struggle with shading a clothed figure with varying materials in perspective? Clearly I understand light applied to basic forms, it's applying it to complex forms with color that I struggle with. You'd understand that if you weren't intellectually dishonest.

Further more, I demonstrated my understanding of light with a 5-minute sketch from memory. You demonstrated your knowledge of light with photographs that connote the principles, calling your skill into question.

There were tanks that had fuel tanks on the side even. It's not as foolish as it sounds. Fuels are combustible but they aren't very explosive. Even if they're hit they aren't super likely to catch fire and even then aren't likely to actually effect the tank.

first keep your lines light and loose when sketching, focusing on gestures but not forgetting proportions, lead the eye through the figure, only use your darkest values where you want the viewer to focus, mainly at crosslines, the rest should stay p loose.
also work on your draftsman ship, its good for discipline, being experimental, loose and messy is all good but it can become a bad habit especially when making finished looking works.

I think working with the current Get rid of all the tits and hair and redraw it, drawing through the forms. From there add the details back. Cunnilingus Cathy's tit is really weird with the nipple/cone point happening way too high. Spinal lines are too curved in many instances. The headboard looks like a torso with tits (unless it's a giant wall painting behind the bed?) Is the bed on the ground?

A couple of the figures need to be completely redrawn but others can just be modified.

also watch Glenn Vilppu or Steve Huston or any other pro figure drawings, like line drawings and take a mental note of where they put their darkest value lines, you should be able to form a pattern and figure it out.

Would like some composition critique and overall comments. Thrall's hand is gonna call down a lighting storm eventually, hence the blue lighting effects, but I don't want it to overpower the piece. Not satisfied with the hand and arm shapes but I'm not sure how to solve it, if you have a redline I'll take it. The water waves felt too far away at first so I'm starting to create a mores gradual wave generation, hence the dark values around the edges. Fire away!

Shaky lines are not a huge turnon, but I love the style and colors! The temperature shift on the cloak is excellent, perhaps push that effect a bit more?

I think you've had this explained but there's a lot more issues going on than specific value and saturation picks that are supposed to emulate your hero. Stop using texture brushes for one, and develop your 3d shapes more before going nitty gritty with the rendering. I don't think your vision is sensitive enough of value variance, looking at issues like the face, belt and lower legs, just keep practicing and it'll stick.

your values are very anemic, you may have something wrong with your monitor but, overall you need to practice lighting and breaking things down into planes to more effectively light them.

you also need to simplify in areas that are less important to the image, e.g. the waves in thrall and either the ground or sky in the space one.

also, your sense of scale is off in the second one - the dude looks enormous. this has to do with perspective errors as well as lighting and values, but the main issue is there is a lack of figure-ground relationship, as we don't know how the astronaut or ship is placed in context to the "ground plane", this confuses the viewer.

hope this helped.

I am not opposed to your critique but the low contrast is entirely deliberate. I don't like the look of saturated pieces and don't make paintings for lousy monitors or phone screens. With that said, I concede that I may have to manage my values...I'm aware of the scale issue in the second piece, but I'm going for a long focal length look as if the camera was zoomed in, a view which is easy to disturb. Would you suggest I move the vehicle further into the painting?

i tried to fix some of the scale issue, but you can do it with either the astro or the spaceship, you just have to decide which one is more important as both are getting similar attention right now and it's killing the flow

idk man you just have to make it look good. trying to fix the image with your preferences in mind made it feel like i was stepping on eggshells every time i tried to make it better, it's gonna be a hard journey if every painting will be such a limited value key, and i would get bored after a while personally

next pieces you do, try to do graphic no-tan thumbnails to figure out a solid composition and stick to it exactly, see how you like it

Wow, I really like the effect you created here compositionally. I would probably prefer to enlarge the spacecraft but maybe this will work better. I also thought of another thing to create more space : make the clouds more diffuse. But this works so much better with the original intention to make the ground a strong compositional actor against the rest of the piece.

PS: Stepping on eggshells describes my journey with this very well

Thanks again for your efforts, I knew it'd be worth it to post here.

i'm glad you found it helpful, and yeah just play around with it. shrink it to about 3 inches wide or so and just move stuff around and adjust it.

clouds being less defined work work well, too, that planet seems pretty far away so it would make sense. just make sure you're really giving the ground some character to its' form and structure, it deserves some love

no problem man, good luck

Your proportions and lines and clothing are good, though I does make the things like the scissor, rope and ladder stand out, because they're not up to par.
I think the biggest problem here is that you drew everything in perfect side view, making the overall image rather flat. If you could add one point perspective to this scene, so that would would get to see more than one side of the forms, it would help create a lot more of depth.
