Is there a way to change the brush size value in PS.
I work on a 4000x4000 canvas and brush size 4 is too big compared to 3.
Can you shrink the shit somehow so brush size 4 will appear smaller and closer to 3?

Is increasing your skills at observation mainly just drawing what you see a whole lot? I just need a more well defined goal for learning to draw what I see better.

>> No.3907320

>>3907271
Absolutely. Its a fundamental skill that literally can't be practiced enough and applies to everything you draw.

When drawing from observation the goal is to train your eye to "see" objectively to accurately judge proportions, shapes, angles and lines that make up whatever you're drawing, and simultaneously your hand to make the right strokes. But its mostly in your mind.

You'll get the biggest bang for your buck from practicing drawing figures, heads, and hands for multiple reasons. Firstly, they're very hard to draw to get a lifelike result so every time you practice you'll be challenged. Secondly by practicing this way you're not only improving your observational skills, but your knowledge of anatomy, foreshortening, values, perspective, etc. Thirdly, chances are if you do any kind of art you'll be doing people or characters at some point so you better start practicing for that now. There's a reason why the majority of instruction at ateliers revolves around these subjects.

Of course I'd recommend going outside and drawing things you see too - animals, trees, buildings, statues, anything you find interesting. Also drawing from direct observation (as opposed to from photographs) feels a lot different so you want to practice that as much as you can.

>> No.3907433

>>3907368
Alright if you're an absolute beginner then jumping straight into figure drawing maybe too much. Follow the sticky then.

What you really want to learn how to do first is how to look at something (like lets say a Pokemon character) and break it down into simpler (but accurate) shapes onto your paper. You will get lost if you try to do all of the small details all at once so learning how to see the big picture is absolutely crucial. Learn how to do this with simple objects first then more complex ones. From there you can add more detail if you can. If you have trouble drawing basic shapes then go to drawabox.com

You can either paint the blacks and leave the white of the paper or cover everything and go back over in white. I prefer the first for traditional and digital but sometimes in digital I'll paint over the black. I find the painting the whites often ends up looking too busy or over-designed along with repetitive patterns. Leaving white of the paper lets it feel more organic. In traditional, the white paint like manga ink, gouache, or white out never looks that great.

This. Artists see the world differently. It's all color, composition, ideas. I see things that are interesting artistically every day - a certain shadow, a texture, a scene. And the trained artist's eye sees colors most people untrained don't. You can't force it, just put in the time, and train yourself to look at things more closely. If you're waiting for something, look round and ask yourself how you'd draw or paint it.

Gesture first. The Vilppu Drawing Manual does it like this. Gesture drawing with simple lines to understand how the body moves. I feel you guys, used to happen a lot, for years when i was starting out. Still get it periodically.

Just do your best to "let your drawings be bad". Kinda figure out your own mental trick for letting yourself work without stressing too much. Some people think about how they have to do a huge amount of bad drawings before they're good and every time they do a bad one its another one that they're getting out of them. Sometimes i just accept that its going to be bad ahead of time and that takes the edge off and even makes it a bit funny.

One thing i used to do a lot: when i do a drawing that looks bad, i study it to figure out at least one things that's wrong with it, something i've been doing wrong up until this point, like some anatomy flaw or proportion or whatever, and if i figure it out, i make sure to address that next time or even do quick little side drawing. Even if i dont nail it next time i can usually still make it at least a little better. This way even if the drawing is bad i know im getting a little better each time and i feel way more at peace.

Honestly that's truly how it is, if you draw for the day and noticed even a small flaw that you can correct then it was a really good day.

>I constantly stress that I'm not improving fast enough or that I don't understand whatever beginner concept I should have already mastered.
you don't have to completely master one concept to hop onto the next. learning to draw isn't a linear process. it's good to constantly jump around topics and go back to things you've studied before but with new eyes.

>>3914345
>Are there different ways of stress?
different causes of stress yeah. it could be external or internal pressure. this seems like an internal source of stress where you're too self aware to enjoy drawing for drawing's sake

>You don't appreciate it because it turns out it's not looking like anything you expected, but at the same time you just wanted to enjoy drawing, even though you can't because it just doesn't seem to work that way.
try focusing on the process instead of (and regardless of) the outcome. like 'yeah this drawing's shit, but this is a nice brush' or 'it doesn't look like the reference, but this method made things click.' or even the opposite, 'this came out really nice, but i had a hard time with the colors, how can i do this better?'

like >>3914365 said, if you can answer the question 'what's one thing i learned from this piece/drawing/study?' i think you'll find that's enough to give you a hit of pleasure. i don't have an answer to 'how can i make this less stressful' except maybe dropping the grind til you make it mindset everyone has here. that's what worked for me anyway.

Just started practicing a month ago. I have come across the same problem I had when I was a kid. I cannot keep my hand steady at all. For both drawing with a pencil and with a mouse. It's so bad to the point that lines will veer off on pretty crazy angles, especially when I'm using a mouse, and quite frankly it angers me.

Is an extremely unsteady hand the result of inexperience, or an issue on its own? I am not the most coordinated person there is, but I feel like my hands are retarded when it comes to drawing.

Does this happen when you write on pen and paper or just when drawing?

My writing is messy, but it's legible. However, when I do write, my letters can get fucked up. I don't think I have brain damage or some shit, but there's certainly something wrong when it comes to using my hands in precision movements.

If writing doesn't frustrate you, you can learn to overcome it with drawing too, which is technically like learning to write letters. If it were me though, I'd have that checked with a doctor.

I haven't been punched that hard, anon, I swear! It's weird because I used to suck at racing/ shooting games because I would miss my shots or always adjust incorrectly, but I'm actually better than average now.

I think I have a tough time learning to be precise and steady when compared to a regular person. I guess I'll just have to try extra hard. Might go to a doctor one day, though. Thanks anon.

When telling an artist how you want your commission drawn, how thorough should you be? Or does that depend on personal preference? Should I release my full autism?

Use illustrator. It's a pain in the ass at first but once you learn the ropes it's not so bad. Also dont be a cuck who pays for adobe. pirate that shit.

Go full autism they want you to be as happy with the piece as much as you do. Do keep in mind some aritst might charge you extra for it though.

I found 3 artists on fiverr that I really like the style of. They seem to do full body with backgrounds for around 80 dollars. I just want a bust shot (Diaphragm up) but with some extra objects and a good background. I'm thinking about paying them maybe 100 dollars, so with autism probably 110/120.

you do , he literally streams his work process on twitch

>>3906964
just watch his twitch streams bro , he streams almost every day , usually does the box thing then opens new layer , sets low opacity on box construction and then draws final lineart over it , sometimes uses box just for perspective reference and changes things up
