**If you make good copies of anime *properly*, you will be able to draw good anime. If you make bad copies of anime or bad anime styled drawings from photos, you will get better at drawing bad anime. Please think carefully about how you are studying.**

This is the thread for:

1. Posting your anime studies:
>Copy exactly but don’t do it aimlessly. Integrate drawing concepts (construction, color theory, tracing, etc.) into your studies in order to pull information from the reference (anime art, figurines, tutorials) that you can later use for your original work.
>Do a single study multiple times to ensure you address all of your mistakes and memorize the correct process in your head. Attempt drawing it from memory as well.
>You will only be able to effectively deviate from your reference after doing exact copy studies accurately and consistently.
2. General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

when drawing, must the eyes always be same height or level with each other no matter if the head is turned slightly to the side or facing fully onward? this is something that confuses me because some artists makes the farther eye (assuming the head is in 3/4 rotation to the side) smaller than the closest eye to the viewer while some don't. And also if you look at OP's pic, Yoh Yoshinari doesn't even make the eyes totally same size or same height. If we take a line guideline on top of the facial features, the eyes and iris are uneven.

or is it that when drawing anime, you don't really need total accuracy with the guidelines, so long as it's pretty then it'll be alright?

>> No.3899682

Perfection is overrated. So long as the face is expressive, no one is going to take rulers at it to make sure it's 1:1 with imaginary guidelines.

We do voice chats, gift drawings to each other and yesterday we did one of those "guess what's the drawing" online games.
It's been pretty solid so far but you have to engage with the other users in order to get that.
Post art, ask for critiques, just chat, etc.

And if you have a problem with the quality of the server either leave or write it there.
But I guess you'd have to do more than just lurk, and being social might be too hard for you.

you mean the advice from aqua? lmao his advice are stupid. If you're a beg, the best place you can get advice from is from people in intermediate and above. You just have to stomach the disses they push to you. They'll kick and throw you off the ship repeatedly for being beg, but they're the ones who can help you, not this pathetic discord. Aqua is kind and all, but his advice is lacking. If you don't see that then either you are a baby who is okay with love taps that doesnt help, or just plain blind because of your low skill level. Ever wonder why the people who are actually skilled in that discord just dump and leave? and those that don't just chat briefly in chat, not crit.

Hi aqua. I don't hate you at all, I think your patience is actually rad for a mod and I like what you've done to people who don't even draw, but to start off, your forms are looking flat. You can sometimes give okay-ish advice, but do you know that you also suffer from the same issues the people you crit also suffers from? So anyway, not only are they flat, but you also do 1 step forward, 2 steps back. Your Shantae artwork is one of your currently better ones, but after that is just Komm süßer Tod with the anatomy and everything. You really need to go hard on whatever anatomy books you're holding on to. And whenever you give advice to people, you give out advice that only fixes 1% of the whole problem in their beg art. There's a giant elephant in the room you don't point that out in their art, and I don't know if you do that to be nice or to not overwhelm them, but it isn't helping. You should do something to help them - the biggest help being referring them to PDFs of wordless anatomy books the moment they join since everyone in there hates reading, but wants to git gud.

Thank you for the insight!

I do know I'm not that great at art myself, but I'm always aiming to improve. I also noticed been days where I noticed my art's been better then next week it's all weak art from me, and I'm trying to figure out why that is.

My critiques recently have been shorter because you have to understand, I've been giving advice on the server for more than a year now and it gets tiresome to repeat the same "nose is too high, eyes too far apart, work on anatomy" every two times a week, so I try to pay attention to the mistakes that aren't as visible to the artist, and assume they already know what else to study up on.
It also doesn't help that I'm monitoring the server during the time I could be drawing.

Also I took some time to clean up that tutorial that was posted yesterday here, it was hard to read so I wanted to facilitate that.

I really like the 80s-90s style of anime, but there aren't really a lot of artists that can successfully imitate the style and make it look good.

I noticed things like pic related and Aikatsu styled art tends to be pretty popular.

It's basically a beginners' book but it uses a fairly different approach to construction compared to what I've seen in western material, starting with a figure that is basically a bendy sheet of paper in 3D and slowly adding mass and applying more defined features as you move on.

Overall the methods in the books feel really intuitive (imo) and lets a beginner draw something that looks appealing almost from the very start.

It's all in Japanese though (though it's fairly simple and usually self-explanatory).

Hi /asg/,

My mentor said that I was really stubborn with his criticism and suggested I posted my work on /asg/. He thinks the character sketch has a "beer belly".
I have no idea how to make here have a remotely slim belly, as I'm only allowed to use cuboids for the torso in the sketching stage, so if I were to subtract irregular shapes from the cuboid it obviously wouldn't be a cuboid anymore.

So, then the next drawing is the lineart, now my mentor says there is a discrepancy between the sketched pose and the lineart pose, I can't really disagree on that, the lineart pose turned out slightly different than I initially had in mind, he says the beer belly is now gone because it's a completely different drawing.
He sent me a redline (which is the picture below the drawings) of how the torso would look like from a side-profile in this sketched pose, I can sort of see what he means by this, but I think it's quite exaggerated.

I don't think the final WIP lineart looks that bad, please let me know your input.

I could, but I thought If I'm going to draw a bad texture myself I'd rather just draw the entire thing directly anyway so most of it has the correct perspective
The tool isn't perfect, at certain extreme angles a texture will lose it's illusion of depth, it's not a big deal if the texture is high quality I guess, but I can't make an high quality texture all by myself

not him, but the main issue is that it looks like you're not visualizing the form and perspective at all. for places like the hair, you just laid down a few lines and called it a day instead of really communicating the form so it doesn't make any sense to the viewers and it also tells us that you don't have any idea of what's going on. this is a running theme in your piece: communicating to the viewer that you don't know what's happening and that you're just winging it.

this theme presents itself with the anatomy too. overlaps and indents where they shouldn't be, and missing indications of where the actual anatomy should be. no indications of any bony landmarks that tell us the orientation of the body. a pose like this might be a good way to hide the hands, but the trade-off is that you have to work out a lot of other anatomy: like how the breasts attach to the pecs, and how the pecs attach to the clavicles which are being pulled back by the arms rising above her head, the squeezing of the deltoid toward her neck and jaw. this is without mentioning the exposed armpits which require additional attention. it's fine to just place a single line to indicate the armpits, because it's anime after all. but the problem is that to place the line correctly, you have to know how all the muscles interlock including the coraco-brachialis which isn't normally visible unless the arms are raised. the belly button is another example of this happening, where you just placed down an indication with no consideration of the form or surrounding anatomy. the indication isn't difficult, but the placement requires you to know the orientation of the body at the very least.

anyway, i drew a few examples of what i mean by communicating the form. the main things to work on are perspective (for the sake of communicating form) and anatomy. the proportions aren't worth nitpicking, because they're largely fine.

you might need better taste, unfortunately

yeah absolutely take it at your own pace and have fun with it. i figure since i was giving critique, i might as well be in depth. a lot of hobbyists actually make more progress than neets who are stuck in analysis paralysis trying to make a career out of art, because hobbyists actually draw. learn a little here and there, and keep drawing, my dude

I don't think I'm qualified for constructional critique but here it goes anyway:
1. Top left:
Bangs should be in front so close those lines off on her left side (our right). Now she looks like she has one bang with different lengths of hair in it.
2. Top right: (If this is all the same woman)
None of her forehead should be visible from bangs. You should also, maybe, lover the amount of hair in background.
Her eye corners are sharper and lower on first picture
Her chin is weaker and sticks out less on first picture
3. Bottom left:
Bangs should be closer to the eyes. Too much background hair for my taste again
Omit the further eye (her right eye) or put less detail on it and move it a bit down with a stronger line defining her upper eye lid. If you want to keep iris in it move it a bit to her nose
I don't know if she is pouting on first picture but she seems to have a bit more cheek there
Overall the left side of her face seems to fit perspective nicely but right eye fucks with everything.
4, Bottom right:
Again with ton of needles amount of hair in background. Make sideburn hair pointing down
I would omit the further eye (her right eye) completely here too. If you want to keep it then don't make line so close to the nose, draw a bit smaller iris, and point it to the sky like right one (it should look like the right black dot in iris is touching top lid).

To me personally this is the level of drawing that I would like to achieve. Consistent and good proportions, decent translation of 3d to 2d

>>3909874
