What do you do for a living, /ic/? Not everyone here is a professional artist. How do you make money when the only skill you've been working on your whole life is art? Are able to balance a full time job and art?

>inb4 everyone here is just a high school/college aged fag that never had to support themselves.

I've worked professionally as a creative professional, and freelancing as an illustrator the whole time. I have solid skills in design, and my art background has always been a big benefit. And, my jobs have always incorporated illustration as part of it, and I got a lot of training paid for by the companies that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I have no complaints. Not the best path for everyone, but it worked for me, and the money has been pretty damn good.

Some of the things I've done are pre-press (starting out), graphic design, image editing, color correction, print publishing, book and ebook design (html and css are oddly satisfying to me), and packaging design. Lots of different industries, interesting challenges, and lots of new things to learn.

I wanted to teach, in college, until I talked to actual teachers about what it's like, and don't regret not pursuing that, as it's mostly political, and I'm not a politician.

Yea it was one of the big 5, I was a code monkey for a few years, then after a few reorgs I managed a team of a dozen engineers. The career was there, I’d just rather do my own thing while I’m still young.

>probably too late to Git Gud the way I'd need to in order to retire after a 10 year career.
It’s never really too late, I found that the important aspects of work are 1) tolerance for bullshit 2) working hard even though you don’t believe in it - you will outlast the other plebs who come and go, and by circumstance find opportunities if you stick around long enough.

I’m actually a pretty bad coder, most of my friends that studied aero, ME, ChemE, and bioE ended up becoming full time coders with only python knowledge.

I'm a photographer, I shoot weddings on weekends (1-3 each weekend, with some free weekends), and do smaller 2hr shoots once or twice during the week.

I edit the small shoots the same day, and have been taking on more second shooting work for weddings (i.e. I work helping other photographer friends, and it doesn't require editing) in order to have more time to focus on art since I'm trying to move away from photography.

That leaves me with a decent amount of time to do whatever I want, so I generally waste my days playing videogames, or planning out ways to monetize my art without ever actually following through with any of them, or thinking about all the things I should practice, getting overwhelmed by them, and give up entirely.

Was a restaurant busser for 3 months. Took the money I saved up and became a neet since January. Been learning to draw full time smut. Parents think I'm doing nothing all day, and I can't tell them I draw degenerate shit because 1. I would have to explain and 2. They wouldn't care regardless of my answer and disown my ass. So I made up a lie saying I've been working on getting my drivers license. Now instead of drawing atm I need to study and get a license in under a week, so they'll stop asking me queations(because no one's happy unless you do what they say).

I guess it's time for me to start looking for a job again. My money is not infinite and I really don't want to start at $0 like last time. :\ This has been the most I've ever improved in anything, so I'm kinda happy.

>would you really be at home drawing and browsing the internet while supposedly being rich and in the prime of your life?
Retirement is more of a lifestyle choice. I'm perfectly happy living with less. Sitting at home drawing is exactly why I am no longer working. I don't need a Tesla or a 2M home to bring me fulfillment.

If you want material things and expensive vacations you will have to keep working to pay for it. I like drawing, cooking, gardening, and hiking - these are not expensive things.

>flaunt
eh trying not to flaunt - I like the idea that we don't need to work to do what we want. I'm more hopeful that others will be inspired to take the leap and abandon the workforce.

I rebuild and salvage items from burned down houses, and occasionally rip out roofing/walls from water damaged houses. Very rarely we do what is called 'disaster cleaning' which involves cleaning up suicides or murders in homes that are going to be put back on the market. These pay 2x the rate of the other two types of work and have a bonus on top of that.

>How do you make money when the only skill you've been working on your whole life is art?
I have been on my own and living in poverty since 19, when I dropped out of art school. I eventually found a job in an industry that will take someone who knows nothing and train them up, with a payrate during the training that is actually decent. Very few people want to/are physically capable of doing this stuff for 8 hours a day so they'll take a literal retard and train you up quickly so long as you can take it physically.
>Are able to balance a full time job and art?
Not at all, no. I drew almost daily from 8 years old until I was 18, and since 18 I've drawn maybe once a week to once a month. As of late, I just drew the first thing I've done in about 3 months I think. I still feel like if I try I might make it somewhere one day, but I never have the energy to do so.

To be honest, i'm content with just drawing for myself at this point. Although I will definitely take the opportunity to work in art if it ever arises.

pic related is my most recent drawing.

Also, if anyone is a broke young adult who needs to make like 30,000-40,000 a year fast, look into this. They will hire pretty much anyone for this field. Get a drivers license if you don't have one and they'll take you even if you have a criminal record.

I don't know if all of them do this, but all of the ones i've heard of do. They also allow you to work as many hours as you want on top of your usual schedule. I've heard of a guy I work with breaking six figures by doing 75 hour weeks.

He looks like he's going to kill himself any day now, but at least he has money. In fact, most people I work with look mildly suicidal and emotionless. You can also get certs for other construction-related jobs while working at a place like this. They usually start at 14-17 dollars an hour + bonus on profitable jobs and as much time and a half overtime as you can handle before jumping off a bridge, or none if you don't want it. Just in case anyone is in the position I was in a few years back. I hear lead technicians usually get a rate of 25 an hour, but it takes a few years to become one. We also usually get to pound beers on our lunch break depending on who you're on the job with.

It's not great but it's certainly better than flipping burgers and not having enough money to get by.

I got into the architecture major. Also not as good, but still pretty good. Grad school will be sciarc in los angeles. Then its off to cucking and hitting the books.

Yes, berkeleys art major isnt great and transferring to, say, college of letters and sciences is really difficult, so you have tk weigh your options. Do you want to work as an artist? Then consider schools fine tuned for that. I wouldnt go to berkeley for it, but you also should, since you get a foot in the door with the techbubble in the bay.

I'm a custodian at a private art college. This July I will have worked there 6 months and can start attending part-time for free. Also my spouse and kids can attend full-time for free, if I had any lol.

Also I make $15/hr, you're getting screwed.

Where do you live? I live in oklahoma which is one of the cheapest states but also the lowest paying state in general. Also I just started and have very little experience. I also get pretty good benefits including free tuition like you do. I doubt I'll go up to 15 but they'll probably give me 12 after a year with them.

It's actually my first week and I'm exhausted after my shift. Not used to standing 8 hours and scrubbing 50 toilets. Did you have this problem? I'm almost too tired to practice.

Minnesota. Ah if you're new to it then that makes sense. I worked for Target for a couple years before my current job.
Also it's a small school, there's only like 30 toilets in the whole building. But I'm constantly sweeping floors, emptying trash, etc because of all the students' materials getting everywhere.
