You’re right about it being bland. Most of it, especially western derivatives of it, is just drawings of lil girl dollies in different outfits. If you’re guilty of churning out drawings of anime girls just standing there, then you’re guilty of basically dressing up dollies in 2d.

There's some truth to what you said. Almost everyone and their left nut wants to draw in an anime/manga style or at least heavily-inspired by it. I think it hast to do with the fact that anime and manga style is

I used to love anime style art. I came to the same conclusion you have. 99% of the time it's garbage, boring, lacking in skill, etc.

I realized that the anime-ish paintings i'm drawn to are generally very concept-promo-art styles of painting with anime designs thrown in. The anime style itself and not combined with other things (meaning straight up linework + painted) is garbage, and even when i see something where I go "oh that person is skilled" I still feel no emotion in regard to the art.
