IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread >>3884811

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

Anatomy for the artist by jeno barcsay. Not the best but it's full of nice pictures and does list all the muscles. It's like 6 bucks used on amazon. Really though, you need a couple references. Some kind of clear atlas that shows muscles and bones and a guide for artists like Bridgman that breaks it down into forms actually used in art. Each on its own is nearly useless.

Pretty soon my family started saving paper for me so i could draw on the backs first and then recycle them afterwards. I am having difficulty selecting colors and then making tones and tints for them based on different light sources. I'm not sure how well my forms are represented, I know that some of the shadows and highlights are in the wrong place, so something like a redline could be useful. Good design, sleek and sharp bur needs more joints. The most fundamental challenge when creating armor is between offering protection but without restricting mobility. As you know a real life turtle's armor offers a ton of protection but sacrifices a lot of mobility for example.

For a human to wear plates of armor it must have joins or else the human will not be able to move at all. This however makes the joints exposed and the obvious weak spots on the armor. Creating protection for the joints but also leaving them loose fitting for maximum mobility is the core of any believable/practical armor design, unless you are going maximum super high tech/magic where the armor is practically a fully flexible second skin or a completely mechanical and independent robotic exterior.

Keep this in mind when designing armor, if you study real life armor as >>3889352 suggested be on the looking for how these armor try to keep joints protected while still enabling mobility.

I tried to alter the armor a bit giving it more joints, especially at the belly/gut and pelvis area where you need more loose fitting plates to enable movement or else the poor guy won't be able to pick up his sword from the ground should he drop it. Also made the shoulders a bit looser fitting and added knee guards.

Hope this helped.

The head positioning looks off in a way. Also the angle of the hip is different from the anime reference. Your eyes aren't looking inwards like the original as well, and because of this it gives your drawing a 100 yard stare feeling instead of a feeling like the drawing is looking at something in particular.
Your drawing of the mouth looks nothing like the original. While yours seems more like a line going from the center of the drawing to one side, the other feels a bit more symmetrical despite having a stylized gap in between where the lips are. Even the way the scar under the eye is positioned is different. The original image's scar is pulling down, almost towards the chin. Yours it is simply going down from the eye.
Remember that anime is merely real life simplified and stylized, and to do a better job at drawing your waifu you have to learn from real life. I reccomend purchasing a smaller pen or drawing larger as well.
Im not a pro so it might not be very good, but I tried to show some comparisons and what is off in this redline.

If you want me to play spot the difference the head/chin angle and butt box? are slightly off I guess. Left eye; missing arm tattoos.
I don't think it matters though. Understanding how it's constructed is more important in my opinion than making your goal to create 1:1 replicas.

Sounds alright, do not beat yourself up about it tough.

Question, do you plan to have ecchi/lewd stuff in your comics? As I can see you are drawing both Acri and especially Mandragora on that pic to be be easily lewdable.

Here are some sketches for alternate Mandragora costumes instead of being nude, Also I an idea to use the thingy top of the head of your characters by changing it to convey emotions.

Oh my comics are supposed to be SFW. I do want to explore morbid or adult themes in my comic to contrast with the cute, but never lewd. I actually have a hard time drawing lewd things, because really it kinda makes me feel like a slut or something. I just like drawing cute things so I guess those can be easily lewdable.
Also cute drawings! I one day thought of doing mandragora variations but I never did them. Also, you've noticed right? You've mentioned before about taking silhouettes into consideration. All three of those designs have very similar head shapes. And eye shapes too.

Also here's a logo I made for a fictional band in the Acrimona comic. Pretty important to the story. I dont think I've shown it before.

These took a few hours to do and most of that was trying to work things out. I know the running one still has a lot of issues. Once you are finished, you should be proud that you tried and finished what you set out to do. Sure, right now you dont have the experience to make something you might like, but In order to keep going you need to be proud of your attempts.

Keep doing studies and also gesture studies. When I was first starting out, studying gesture helped me understand where lines should be placed. For starters your mistake might be going for hyper-stylized drawings when you aren't that good yet. You should worry a bit, but I don't think it's that hard to get you into the right mindset. The books you've read aren't wasted time, knowledge is knowledge, but you're going the wrong way about applying it maybe.

Look, I googled "character sketches" and "anatomy sketches" and found MANY good drawings.
Compare it. It's THAT easy. Now you get a critical mind's eye. What is different in these sketches.. from your drawings? What's different indeed. Since you went for a heavily cartoon style on the right ones, there's not much to compare.

But if I remember correctly you tried to do a more realistic drawing on the left one *besides the face), though it seems you didn't correct the anatomy of that girl.
You shouldn't try a pose that hard at first and if you do, use a reference. I found plenty by searching for "girl squatting butt" buy maybe you know a better term. Anyway...

The sketches' arms have many more sections than yours. That's simple enough to see. There's a big cylinder for the upper arm, then a cylinder for the elbow, another one for the forearm.... And a tube! You for example stopped at the forearm and directly drew a hand on it, but the sketches have a tube connecting the forearm to the hand. Now that you know it, for example, you shouldn't forget it. Then there's some other characters showing their backs at the very bottom, pay attention to the sections and remember to separate your torsos in 3 sections (upper, middle, lower).

I dunno. If you have this much trouble after a year, I'd recommend copying a bit of good anatomy drawings and real people pictures from Quickposes or google, ideally naked or with very fitting clothes. It seems you don't exactly know HOW should real people look, so be my guest and copy some.

Does this look expressive enough to you? I accomplished it by detailing the eyes and lips a bit. Besides doing the eyes and brows, there's a line between them symbolizing the eye socket, and there's also the markings that form between the brows, AND the markings that form under the eyes. Here I drew those lines under her eyes to depict a negative emotion, but a smile for example pushes the corners of the eyes and mouth a bit.
And as I said, it adds some element of 3D to draw the mouth with lips. Some people just draw the mouth as 1 simple line, but it's quite easy to add another line for the lower lip.

This is all assumming you find it expressive but I can't help much more than that.

some advice.
when painting black skin or any skintone, think about the tonal qualities of the skin : it always comes in different color variations. for this type of dark skin (very dark) they would range from purplish to reddish. how skin comes off will also depend on the light source. always look up references for skintone! get a lot of pictures of that skintone and paint from them before trying to paint skintone from imagination.
i don't really understand your light source here. there is direct lighting but the way you set it up is very dim. normally in scenes with such direct lighting the lighted areas would be very bright and there will be a lot of contrast with the shadows. even on black skin the highlights will be very bright, almost white! in your picture the colors are dim and muddy. i recommend that if you do anatomy studies you just keep it to values - color will distract you from the form and you won't get it right (the form nor the color). as for your color studies they shouldn't be form-focused/anatomy-focused : prefer speedpainting for color studies, focus on the color and not the form. i really recommend color and light by james gurney (perfectly and simply explains color).

Try it like this Anon, just take it simple. You can get a pretty decent figure by just dividing lines in half.

First select the full length of the body from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet, then at half you get the bottom of the pelvis. Then dividing those in half you can find the rough place of the knees and the the bottom of the rib-cage. Same goes for the arms but the hands make the arm longer.the hand generally reach around the pelvis or lower.

Same for the face. Just divide the head into half and that halfway line you get the eyes, make the eyes smaller, even anime eyes only appear to be large they are not very large compared to the face, put the eyebrows a bit above them. Then from the eyes measure the half was down towards the chin and you get the bottom of nose. From the bottom of the nose measure down again and halfway you will get the bottom of the lower lip and you can put in the mouth slightly above that.

And remember these are guidelines, bodies are slightly different from person to person but these rough guidelines are very easy to follow and are quite common.

any type of reference (photo, 3D image) isn't drawing from life, and in your case you're drawing something that isn't real, so it's even less 'like drawing from life'
that said, a dynamic 3D image is better than an image if your goal is to draw from life, especially if you can play with the lighting yourself

Hello, very new to this, as you can evidently see.
Here are my problems
>I trace over my lines a lot, making them look very "rough"/no clean single line as I've seen in other people's art
>I have no real understanding of what I'm doing, this drawing was an attempt at https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/3150202530/cdff5a024baf6aac0fe979c4a0046b11.jpeg
As you can see, I just copied the lines and I even missed the size of them, by a long shot.
>I managed to make a dead stare even more dead, and it doesn't resembles him at all
>I have no concept of perspective and anatomy
>To control my own movements (pivots) is hard, very hard
>When drawing from my own imagination, it tends to be even worse, looks like a proper abomination, i won't lie and I'll add this, I experience problems with creativity at the moment
And that's all that I've noticed so far, or what I can remember from the moment.
Now I wish to become an artist and be remarkable at this, I don't know if I want to go for total realism or animation (which might be more likely) but the basics are the basics and here I am.
So please, what should I know? And if its not to bother but another thing that I could draw to get a broader idea of where to improve/a diagnosis of how bad things are right now

Start with the side view. Learn proportions. How much space goes between the wheels for example, what angle should the windshield go at, how tall should a car be relative to its length.

Once you get that down, you can move on to 3/4 stuff which is a lot more complicated. This picture is an example of my side view. Compare that to my 3/4 and you see how much harder it is.

Blending layers is so much fun, this could work as a cover for something. But the actual skin.. I can't make it look like a solid drawing like Sakimichan does. I'll keep polishing it a few more hours but I think this looks cool, maybe I can put some kind of armor covering him.

I just hate how I draw because I used to draw crappy little cartoon characters when I was in Middle School and I am worried that I have entrenched that habit so heavily that I am just stretching that shitty concept around the drawings that I do now. I understand that "motivation" isn't really something to be concerned about and that just putting in work is enough. My lack of motivation comes more from me being confused and not knowing what to do at this point besides "just draw", because apparently the books I read didn't help, as others can't see that. I believe I understood what I read and what I did read I drew alongside it to try and internalize it. I basically just read them because I was told to do so, unsure if they would actually help me. I draw every single day for at least an hour and have a folder that contains everything I've ever drawn.

Here is some really quick stuff that I am not really proud of. This is a repost since I posted in the wrong thread. This shit is so confusing.

Your knowledge about facial features and neck anatomy is absent. Puting symbols on loomis head is just not enough to make good looking head/face.
There is too much wrong stuff here so i'm not gonna go in detail cuz its pointless for you.

You should study head planes and forms of nose, mouth and eyes. Use simple forms and recreate them at various angles.
Do it with neck too, and then study anatomy of it. Once it done go and draw some heads from life or photos. My sketch isn't perfect cuz im beginner as well, but you shuld see the differences. Keep in mind that is stylized so its not great example of what i talking about.

Are Sycra and Sinix worth a go if I take shown info in better than reading?

>> No.3891687

>>3891677
Gl anon, also what you can do when studying is to avoid overlapping lines aka chicken scratching.
Try to make longer more dynamic lines, if it does not look good just press ctrl z and repeat until it will look good. You gonna spend more time on your sketches but its gonna be very benefitial cuz you will start to developing muscle memory wich is very important in doing line work.

>> No.3891688

None of their stuff is created equa ome series are better than others. Sycra's Foundation of Light and Shadow series is definitely worth a watch and a rewatch as well as his theory vids on composition and stuff, he explains the theory pretty simple and easy to understand way. His How to draw anime and people vids are a bit less good IMHO.

I watched them few years ago and i got some useful stuff from their videos.
Remember that they are not magnus opum of drawing, they are just slightly better than jazza. New masters academy or even proko is much more efficient if you want to improve.

Challenge: Draw a line from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, straight down the middle of the face, following the surface contour of the face.

You are the necromancer lolita Anon right?

I think you are doing alright for your level. The part where it doesn't look 3D is because the hair doesn't have enough shading on it. From the body I can gather that a rimlight is coming from bottom and some less powerful from the front. The hair is a very reflective surface when clean or wet meaning it will have a wide range from dark to bright. On your picture it is way too bright and could use more dark spots but it is hard to tell its shape because of the messy floaty nature it has on your picture.

Another thing that stick out for me is the white eyes it is important to note that the eyes are never fully pure white in real life, they can change from yellowish to red from person to person and how their health is. They white parts of the eye can also be darker while in shadow. Using this idea you can put the eyes closer to űthe rest of the face and you can even put white hightlight spots on it (yes just like in anime) to give them that glassy feel.

Unless you were going for a "Glowing eyes" effect. If yo uwere then you can achieve that by adding on some light airbrushy fog around them and make them pop out by making them pure white/bright colored.

I provided examples what do you think?

Yes! You figured out who I was even though I didn't draw on traditional this time around. I was going for those glowy red eyes you did, you really are capable of fixing everything... Too bright and little contrast on the hair, got it.
Thanks for this anon, I deleted my post because I wasn't feeling like my idea came to life but you finished it.

What do you mean, how to fix it? I just told you it's too wide. Draw it narrower. Do you honestly look at those two pictures side by side and not see that glaring difference in proportion? I'm not asking you to be mean, I'm asking you to see if the problem is with your perception of the reference or with your application to the paper. If it's digital yea you can easily edit that to mitigate it but on paper, if you want to make a good drawing by hair, you have to pick up an eraser or a new piece of paper and do it again paying more attention not to repeat that mistake.

hey fuck you man, you make it sound as if it's a piece of piss when it isn't, you often don't spot a mistake until you compare it to the original
when I flick through both pictures and overlap it's not even that bad, it's just difficult to get an exact replica of the subject

I'll definitely 'draw it narrower' next time though, fantastic advice for when I draw any more 'its'
