How much would it cost for someone to make a base figure/pose for me?
I've been trying to get something going for a while on my own, but nothing really comes out looking right. I know I should just gitgud, but I took on a project that I guess was something out of my skillset. I don't need anything colored or anything, just something for me to get started with. So just a basic figure, somewhat stylized but a bit based in realistic proportions, with just some basic linework on top for the body (with some construction lines underneath), and maybe a basic head with some features.

Pic related are my first and second attempt (horrible, I know). I got a little further along with the second but it just didn't feel right. I can't even draw heads properly.
Again, I'd like to learn how to draw stuff later, but this is a project that I've bitten off more than I can chew with, so I'm willing to pay someone to get this base stage done as long as it's reasonable.

I do graphic design, and figured I could whip something up pretty easy, but I guess I've been really out of practice as far as drawing goes. I just figure it'd be better to just ask someone who's more skilled than me in this aspect so I can get this done. I used to be able to draw, but I haven't done people in a long while. Definitely going to practice more after this.

Look Anon, the price is relative everywhere in the economy. You have to be the one to put your foot down. Pricing depends on a lot of factors that can drastically change from commissioner to commissioner and may often be unknown. Both of those are well worth $40. Especially the NSFW one which you could bump up higher because of the NSFW tag and bg.

If you haven't been paid yet you either have to be patient and trust the commissioner or send him a respectful reminder and ask for a specific date. Asking for a specific date is always better and more mature even if it is a bit further down the line you would like.

The client going poof is sadly always a possibility but you should have at least safeguards up for that if you are dealing with random nobodies.

I had some problems and it took me a few weeks to finish the drawing.

I could not do exactly what he'd asked me to draw, so I first made the drawing of the right that was simpler.
And this week I did the left one.

It's the first time someone asks me for a drawing, until then I've drawing it on my own, so I do not know about values and how to deal with those things.

I'll wait this week to see what happens, since I finished the drawing only last Thursday.

I did a third drawing, this one, but I think he was not interested ... I was going to do a nude version, but it's going to be a lot of work and maybe not worth it. Besides that the body has been traced, it's not an original drawing.

As someone who's been doing commissions full time for over 2 years, let me give you some advice.
>complete a basic sketch for a commissioner, but NEVER continue the work until they've paid you full price. Even if they are a returning customer.
>Your work could easily be $60 USD PER character. Background not included.
>When charging someone, use the invoice feature on PayPal, don't let them directly send you money and have a terms of service (no refunds, etc).
This will help prevent charge backs.
>If someone wants changes in the drawing after the sketching stage, charge extra. No matter how nice they are.
I've had people make up to 10 "small" changes throughout a drawing to avoid being charged.
>If someone continuously wants a different pose and doesn't like the initial sketch, charge after the second attempt.
I've had people do this to get free sketches so that way less pricey artists could take care of the rest of the work. Once you start charging, they leave you alone.
>If someone's OC is super detailed or it ends up being more work than initially quoted (not including your fuck ups for lack of a better term) don't be afraid to charge extra.

No it isn't. Best way to determine price on artwork is how long it takes for you to make, just like any job. If you can figure out how long it takes you, then you can figure out how much to charge by attaching that to an hourly rate. It also gives you an explanation when shitheads get pissy about your prices.

Unless you want to waste 5 hours working on someone else's idea for $20, figure out your shit and make sure you're getting what you're worth.

They'll have to go through more trouble to get it back. It's also against PayPal ToS to sell porn art, so it'd be a risk of freezing both yours AND the customers account if they went to them. In the invoice, just make sure you write vaguely what the comm is. For example "single character full color" instead of "Mercy getting cummed on". You also have to process the invoice afterwards to say that your product was digital goods and delivered.
I've never had refunds doing this and because I also took precautionary steps from my previous post.

Never complete more than one sketch at a time for a customer. Did about 8 base sketches for this one guy which took about $100 of my time (since I had other comms going and could have completed or started others). I always give the first 2 edits free then start charging at 3 and up. I honestly should have known better, he said he was waiting on refund from another artist running off on him but kept asking for sketches. Needless to say, but he ran off with all of those sketches and I never got paid.

At that point you would probably be better off throwing out stuff you do for yourself or for free. Trouble is that first impression matters you do not wish to be "the guy that does stuff cheap" people will expect that from you. Whatever your art level, i cannot imagine ANY art being worth $5. Even if it's for "getting your shit out there" Out where? In the realm of underpaying people? Even if you can knock out the drawing there's still the emails, followup etc, which always takes up more time.

For $5 you can't even have someone do some housecleaning for 30 minutes, let alone you doing decent artwork. So you're drawing at a loss.

Use your precious productive time to invest in yourself and your art. That's the post profitable way to spend your time. Your drawings look alright but the major fault is the lack of polish. Cameraphone pictures, lined paper, sloppy finish and visible rough pencils. Without sounding condescending, would you spend money on your own drawings?
Try to build a few pieces, work them until they shine. Good work will come to you when you deserve it. Bad work is always easier to find, but who wants bad work?

I focused on building a portfolio for years before work finally started coming in. And once it started i've just been bouncing from job to job. Now i can happily say i'm not even picking up a pencil for assignments under $300.

Also, corporate clients > commissions. There's more of everything: professionalism, directness, clarity, vision, and most importantly, budget.

You could definitely be charging more anon, especially if you move to traditional, I plan to when I start doing pet portraits. How do you advertise by the way, facebook? I'm trying to understand how to reach people for pet portraits, especially digital.

My goal is to get regular commissions of the following types, all digital:

People portraits, pet portraits, D&D or other OC character art (bust, halfbody, ref sheet, or scene). I think a lot of people would love to have a great moment from the campaign immortalized, and all players + gm could pitch in for it

I plan to eventually start doing traditional options of the above as well, that way I can charge more because of materials, having to ship it to people, and also the fact that they now have a physical thing to hang in their home or bring to a session. I think pencil and oils would be the mediums I use.

Anon understand that pixel art is a big niche topic however that pixel art you got is pretty legit good quality. You can easily bump your price up to the double of that to match the normal arts. Since it is niche pixel art will not be useful for most normie clients so charging a lower price will not really help. However those people that are looking specifically for for pixel art will be more than happy to pay you higher than what you have now.

Ideally do both depending on what makes you comfortable and how urgent your situation is.

You could join fandoms you like, enter contests, give gifts to people that you like, help others who are struggling. Do art streams, go to other's streams and just... be a decent person.

Ultimately the final takeaway is that you are active and visible while constantly being productive and there are many ways to achieve that.

FUCK. NO.

I'm from a third world country but I price my art the same way artists from any other country would.

my lowest price is $13 but that's for a cleaned up whole body sketch, I'm not that skilled yet

dirt cheap prices would attract shitty clients who'd guilt trip you into even lowering your prices or force you into making their commission prettier than you normally would in the given price

You notice I said its a starting point. You're a business, and making sure you're maximizing the amount of money you're making for the time spent is the most important thing.

As demand for your product(your talent) increases, you want to raise prices correspondingly.

I do think that too many artists sell themselves short by charging too little, especially for a color piece.

So sometimes I take commission work on Upwork. I know there's a lot of shitty clients, but I've gotten some good jobs on there from time to time.

I saw a job asking for an artist to do illustrations for a children's book for around $1500, so I put in a proposal.

Client gets back to me and asks about my experience n shit.
He then asks "if we were to work together, what would be your steps for illustrating the book from start to finish? Would you be available to do at least 4 project?"

I don't want to say no and ruin the chance of getting this job (because I could use the money ATM), but I have no idea what it'll be like to work with this guy on one project, never mind 4. Is there a professional way of telling someone "I would be available to do 4 projects, but it all depends if you will be an asshole to work with or not during the 1st project"?

Why do clients even ask shit like this? Why can't a client just focus on one project at a time?

Please excuse the abysmal proportions/perspective/ everything else, I am not an artist, but I will need to commission one in 5 or so months.

How much would something like this in a relatively high quality anime style cost me? The red line is where the actual drawing would stop. Going to ask for color as well, so that will surely spike up the price.

Dark silver lines - hands and arms
Blue - Background furniture/architecture

I surmise it will cost over 100?

Large, buff demon hands grabbing his shoulder from below and from the side (two different demons). The skinny hands are female demon hands wrapping around his jaw and shoulder. The guy is standing in a circular room, almost in the center and there is a giant bookshelf behind him.
