So how many of you do taxes for your freelancing payments?
I'm pretty fucking confused.
How much money do freelancers usually owe out of their income?
Like if I make less than 15k a year, how much would I pay quarterly and yearly?

>> No.3888387

depends on where u live boi
I'm based in spain and from a 2k/month freelancing I'd have to pay almost 50%. I think it was around 900 euros/month in taxes last time i did the numbers.
Of course I'm not earning that much yet but It's what i would need earn to be left with a livable wage.
We have elections coming up soon so this may increase even more

I'm not a tax lawyer but in the US, federal self employment tax is 15.3% of 92% or so of your net earnings. That's the combined employer/employee contribution to social security and medicare. Then you pay income tax. You also have to pay estimated taxes quarterly if you make over 6k a year. The general rule is to withhold 40% of your business income for taxes just in case. End of year adjustments are a bitch due to how you have to make and pay quarterly estimates without penalties. Oh, and state taxes.

You aren't going to be paying that much after expenses and deductions kick in, the changes in the tax structure make it hard for me to say anything specific as it's been a while since I helped do filing for a photographer. There's now a 20% pass through business deduction that applies to freelance artists.

Now, you're a digital artist and have no meaningful expenses unless you're going to furcons to sell your wares. You'll take the standard deduction. You're single and live with your parents so that's 12k. Then the 20% deduction on the rest. With 16k a year, you'd pay about 2800 a year in taxes. Maybe. I'm just banging out a high estimate. Could be a lot less but you need expenses to lower your net and reduce your social security tax.

I have a registered business here in Poland. I pay taxes, social welfare and a fee to the accountant. Income tax here is 19% and social welfare costs ~$140 (i'm still elligible for a 50% discount). I wouldn't say it's really bad, I still make like ~$1500-1800 a month which is above average in my country

Take it with a grain of salt, I wrote that on the toilet. Everyone I know has consulted with professionals and most of them get someone to file for them. You need someone to explain it all to you and have some good bookkeeping software.

All I can say is that you need to keep good records and learn the system to the best of your ability. Like I know you can deduct PayPal fees but I don't know if it's separate from the standard deduction. Or what counts as business use and why you don't want to be working on your personal computer should you get audited. Or how to amortize the depreciation on a cintiq.

I never thought that accounting class would come in handy.

Only if you get audited.

The maverick question is whether reporting it as an expense would change your taxes.

Just make sure your clients mark your payment as a gift, if the gift is under 15k usd per person paying you then it's non taxable, if it is greater than this then the person giving the gift is the one responsible for filing the tax reforms. For this make sure you and your client understand that, let's say he'd gift you 1k and you, being their friend, decided to gift him a painting for their act of financial benevolence.

>> No.3889930

>>3889927
That's just asking to get audited. Anyone spending a grand on a painting is writing that shit off on their taxes.

>> No.3889943

>>3889930
I, as the creator of the art, wouldn't get shit as it is not my property and in fact benefits the buyer since the art can be assigned a market value (even thought it was a gift, it is now their property and can have it assessed and inflated) while they can easily donate it and write it off as a tax deduction. The only downside is that you cannot write off the cost of your materials to create the artwork, as this should fall into the "hobby" category rather than business.

More than a grand and you're going to be filing it as self employment. You can change your w-4 filing status at work to take more out and make up for the taxes up to a point so you don't have to get raped when you file or pay quarterly.

>> No.3890964

>>3890957
Would it even be worth it at that point? I should note I'm a little closer to 60k. I could really use the extra money for big life events coming up, and I draw all the time in my free time anyways. But if it means the gubmint will be taking half of the extra stuff I earn (I know self emp is killer rates), or even worse affect the taxes I already have to pay, I might as well just not.

>> No.3890981

>>3890934
Oh yeah, the 1k figure is just an asspull but is generally the point where other freelancers start reporting so they can make expense deductions. Cost of materials, new camera lenses and SD cards, delinquent invoices, there's a lot to deduct.

Other income is for weird one time shit like jury duty or whitewashing a fence. Plus there is no such thing as hobby income anymore.

>>3890964
I'm not a tax lawyer and don't make that much. You can always just not report it. It's (theoretically) only an issue when your numbers don't add up and you're like the urban gentlemen who are unemployed and live with their mom but have a brand new Caddilac. Or are /reporting/ business income as something it isn't. Fuck, PayPal doesn't even send you a 1099misc unless you make a lot. A lot lot.

It would be worth it to find a friend with a side job and ask.

You're right, I was confusing it with some other ways to reduce your gross income and increase your net.

I never noticed how hard it is to create useful expenses as a freelance artist. Low overhead is great and all but there aren't many conventional ways to reduce your taxable income. It's all dubious shit like calling a trip to the zoo research or calling your girlfriend a model and assigning a cash value to your penis.

If you only make 15k, you should be claiming all of those payments and then making up a bunch of extra fake ones.

Tax refunds for poor are designed to encourage people to work. The more you make, the more you get back. When my wife was a waitress, I doubled her refunds by claiming her tips plus and extra $2000 in pretend tips.
