What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Study from Hitokaku if you want something more 'manga focused.' Either way the point is to learn to draw from construction rather than it is to learn any one teacher's method. You're going to inevitably deviate away from whatever was taught in the book when you get more comfortable drawing, so this or that teacher matters less and less the more you draw.

Learning anatomy definitely doesn't hurt and adds more appeal to your art when it looks correct. I don't really study from books but I learn anatomy of subjects as I'm interested in them. Right now I'm obsessed with birds so I've been studying their anatomy more closely through drawings and observing them in life, like how their wings and legs move and how they're similar/disimilar to other creatures. It's definitely not the fastest way to learn, but I find I enjoy and retain the knowledge better when I know I'm learning it for something meaningful and not just learning to know it.

Don't use the style argument, it can only be reasonably applied to those who are able to draw reality on a high level and can exaggerate based on their understanding. You can hardly claim the same as you're still learning your foundations. It's similar to copying manga eye shapes without knowing why they are drawn that way. May get a good result but when someone says it looks off can't claim it was a deliberate choice as you don't understand why yet, you just imitated a guy that did and thought it looked good. You could draw quick thumbnail copies of her and see how she looks if you moved the mouth and nose up w/ different shapes, change the iris positions etc. Really if I were you I'd just finish it up and move on, you did a decent job but don't dwell on one drawing for a month.

dont know whats wrong with the face and the hand
i don't know if i want really want to continue doing this sort of lineless stuff, but i learned a lot. i became a lot more confident becuase halfway through i merged everything and started working on one layer until the end (except for some light shit)
maybe i overdid it on the lighting, also not enough dark values in the upper half i think because it doesn't go well with a light background, not enough contrast
don't know which version is better

at this point im going to move on to something else
some of the brushes i used in this were not at 100% opacity so if i drew outside what i already had on the page it would produce a translucent line, so i had to switch to an opaque brush whenever i wanted to work on the edges, though at points i just blended the edges needlessy and ruined their definition
gonna work with only opaque brushes from now on and try to get better edge control. also had trouble defining masses in the upper half like the head, though the shape is more or less clear i think i couldve used slightly darker colors for the shadows as to make the shapes more prominent
a recurring problem of mine is i use values that are too light, like what should be a midtone area is more of a highlighted zone and what should be a dark area is closer to a midtone
still figuring out how to make appealing faces

>eventually anyone that sees it just comments about the weapon

God damnit how was I so blind to not realize how fucked that mace was? It's already posted everywhere so I can't go fix it without deleting everything first. Why did I put a screw top on it?
I'm so pissed at myself for this like my mood just swung completely from elated to devastated. Just wanted to vent that, I don't normally mind my mistakes, just fix them for next time and move on, but this one is hitting me hard for some reason.

this is really cute anon! you can still post a revision, just be open about why you wanted to change it. the biggest thing that throws it off imo is that handle is so short it & the coloration is such that it ends up looking more like a kendama or a toy

>elated to devastated.
art is a monster like that, it makes you happier than anything but then some little thing happens and it just sucks all the life out of you. if there is any positive to be found it's that this can only happen because you care deeply and want to make really good work which is a desire that will keep making you stronger in the long run. you've already improved a lot from the last time i saw your work.

my tablet pen suddenly lost its sensitivity and the secondary click-and-drag/waterdrop tool as well (the long button on the pen)
does this mean it's losing battery? should i replace the pen? i've done it before when my dog chewed up my first one.
my tablet pen hasn't experienced problems like this and i've had it for years so it's quite old

you gotta construct

Here’s a quicky - look at her right wrist, her forearm just kinda blends into her hand. Try to bend your hand in that position, either into a mirror or a camera, and use what you see to define her wrist better. You can probably find a reference somewhere of a hand in that position too.

Can't touch a pen for the next week or so, but I'll explain what I can. Navel should be on her centerline (trace a line through her giddy gap, you'll see what I mean)
Her hips look as if they're facing the viewer due to how wide they are (instead of following the perspective of the pose which I'm guessing is meant to be 3/4.
There's an overall lack of structure as well, you haven't considered the abdomen as a volume it's all just flat (in the wrong kind of way) face is cute tho.

To me, it looks like coloring, shading, and shape design. Unfortunately I can’t help you much with the first 2, but when it comes to shapes, he basically simplifies human anatomy in a way that’s pleasing to the eye. Mike Matessi’s Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators has an excellent section on this that I’ve uploaded a page from. Basically, know your anatomy well enough and you should be able to simplify the body into appealing shapes the way Harada can. Try it yourself by tracing that drawing you uploaded, but rather than going line for line, break her body down into simple shapes and see if you notice a pattern. You can also try it on real life figures as well as your own drawings.
