It's how most artists began. Even then, you start from something established. From comics, doujins, illustrations, whatever.

You're better off discovering an alien microcosmo in your closet than get a job as an illustrator at a company.
Most companies get freelancers nowadays.
So, you could get gigs but no stable job.
And it also depends on what kind of illustration you do.
And you won't get paid for drawing already existing characters unless you get commissioned by a private person.
You should do some more research into the subject and get a realistic view on the matter.
