IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread >>3872665

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

The face doesn't look misformed in my opinion.
However, the environment seems is not so clear to me, a steam engine room in a pirate ship is my best guess.
You kind of fail a bit on the metallic look of the background.

The hand near the vagina still looks a bit wacky, but the flaws in the pirate girl have mainly be resolved.

My perspective is shit as is my lighting. Drawing cars is not like drawing other things. Humans are organic. They're so much more forgiving if they aren't perfectly symmetrical or proportional. Cars have to be perfect otherwise you draw like a 3rd grader. I've been at this for longer than I'm proud to admit. And I'm talking about drawing from imagination not from references.

I've been going through Keys myself over the last month or two, yes you should be reading it and doing the exercises one by one
bare in mind that the author wants you to be drawing from life, not pictures (go to page 214 and he talks about it more), but the short of it is that pictures are already composed and already 2D so it takes a lot of the thinking out, and cameras are inherently worse than cameras for natural observation (1 camera vs 2 'cameras', eyeballs)

if you find yourself struggling a lot on a particular exercise and want to try it again, definitely do so, you can only gain from it
I gave up around page 100, the book would be extremely useful if you were in an art school full of students, but if you're a NEET like me with nobody to use as a reference and never leave the house you'll find it difficult, as the book expects you to draw from life all the time which can be frustrating

Already gave igor a shot a while ago
I'm gonna go through the book but if there's anything i need to put any effort into obtaining i'll just use an image off google or skip it. When I finish this I'm gonna do a little victory lap and re-do all the exercises before saying goodby to ol' dodboy and hello to loomis.
I'm trying to get over a gaming addiction as meme-ey as that sounds and all the time i would have spent on vidya everyday is gonna go straight to this drawing shit.
I barely have a social life and can't manage to create one so i'm just gonna be doing this stuff like 5 hours a day when i'm not at my shitty job or sleeping. Maybe in a year or two i'll have someting in my life I can have some modicum of pride in lol.

I can see what you mean, calf is way too thin, and the knee is a mess on the front leg, and looks stupid. I can't see a problem with the length, referring to the ref though.

Never heard of "natty shoulders", but I assume you mean too manly, or simply largew, in which case you're definitely right. Are their placement in relation to eachother the cause of this "broken clavicle" look? Maybe lowering her right shoulder would fix this issue?

Also, the pelvis does seem to point in the opposite direction, although I'm unsure which lines make it look as if it is twisting opposite?

After going through the first chapters of Figure Drawing by Steve Huston, i decided to dabble into Michael Hamptons book and try to do some landmarks and a simple skeleton (according to the book).

This is honestly only my second try but as of now I'm not sure if this method is for me or maybe I'm missing something? His pages on drawing simple skeleton limbs feels a bit obtuse to me and not sure if I'm using his methods right.

They're fine as 5 minute sketches. If you're in a class, your question is one that you should be asking your teacher.
If not, I would say start focusing more on finding the contours, and incorporating them. Look for the S curves, and draw more long, confident lines, instead of broken lines. Learn to make the lines flow throughout the drawing.
Also, it's time to move up from block shapes, start refining the shapes of the hands, feet, and face.

5 minute sketches are really just finding the form, and gesture, so there's not much point in focusing too hard on them - put more effort and focus into more refined work, with more time, starting from a gestural piece like this that you feel you did well. Work bigger, move to the next couple levels of refinement and detail.
Also, pay more attention to center of mass, and grounding the figure. That's a challenging thing starting out, but it can help you balance the drawing, when they're not floating in space. A simple shadow defining the ground plane is all you need, at the minimum.
You're not doing anything wrong, that's glaring.

Stop thinking of it as a grind, this isn't an MMO.

You're experimenting and practicing. If you grind exercises, all you accomplish is getting good at grinding that exercise. Art is about improving, progressing, learning, gaining confidence and skill. If you feel you're solid in the work you're doing, go up a notch or too, into more refined work. The challenge of the new will teach you more than sheer repetition.

No art class I ever took, or heard of, had students "grind" anything. That mentality is from here, where some anons have invented a bizarre version of art education in their own minds.
Other have corrupted the idea of what happens in art education into the "just draw" meme, which has some merit to it, but it should be "Just draw, with focus and guidance, and goals."

But you have learned enough to see one of the problems. Congrats, you learned something. Keep doing that, and you'll get somewhere.
This is how you learn to draw - part of it is learning to see where you're making mistakes. That's what role a teacher takes in a studio course, it's not to hold the pencil for you, or walk you through every step, it's to help you see where you messed up.
You're learning where to pay close attention, where mistakes happen. This is valuable.

Feathers are challenging to even skilled artists.

Everything has a structure. Feathers form on birds in very specific ways, that are related to their function. Feathers have different shapes, depending on their function - a wing feather will be completely different than a body feather.

Get some reference, and look at the real shape of feathers (they're not chisel shaped like you have), how they lay on top of each other, what direction they face, how they change shape along the wing. Translate that into contours in your drawing.
I've researched wings and feathers for professional commissions, so I'm familiar with this - it's a pain, but once you figure out what's really going on, you can produce more solid drawings. Break it down, look at the wings in sections.

You're doing well. There's room for improvement, but as a snapshot in the process, you're headed in the right direction. You're still drawing what you think is there, especially on the face, but in this case, you drew something that's pleasing to the eye, and looks to be a developing style, so it's not worth harping on. Mostly, I would say focus on measuring more. You're in the ballpark, take it a couple steps further.

ear is a lot better now. the hair is tricky since there is smoke as well and his hair is not very conventional anyway but you might apply this http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2008/04/hair-ribbon-secret.html there somewhat.

on the face its also difficult to see the form because of the lighting, it is very flat in the photo. try to see the different planes on the head. they are symmetrical so both sides from the middle line will have them, mind the perspective when you are trying to find them. you need to know some anatomy of the skull to do it well. i suggest you draw the human skull a few times from different views and try to look for pictures where the lighting has contrast. clear shadows and clear light.

chin area feels flat. you can trace the form with your pencil to make it appear 3d at first. I also feel that you should move your chin to the right a little, there is not enough room for the mouth and the jawbone is too narrow. also the bridge of the nose and the angle of the ear should be in the same angle. ear is now not as straight vertically as the nose is. I also feel that the eyes are too big or that the eyelids dont have enough space before touching the brow. the hole in the nose is too big, we cannot see it so much and not on that angle, make it smaller and different shape, its too wide. mouth you also need to move to the right since the jaw should also move. the upper lip is in the shadow so keep that in mind, now it looks flat. analyse the structure of the lips, do some practise drawings to understand it first. when you move the jaw, also move the chin.

Vilppu's Drawing Manual (you can find it on torrents)

Watch it, take notes, try to copy what he's doing. Forget about it for a few months while studying something else like Perspective, Shading, 3D Form, whatever. Consider buying a subscription to New Masters Academy while you're at it. Then return to the Drawing Manual once again (and maybe other Vilppu's courses too).

Repeat until total absorption.

What is important to realize here is that the more you know about everything, the better you get at understanding what you're told. The process of learning is recursive in that way. You have to occasionally return to previously consumed content and filter it through the accumulated knowledge.

Good luck and be patient. This will take years.

Drapery and mapping where those patterns go on the altered 3D form of your character can be a really good way to help with fundamentals like overlapping volumes and fitting everything on curved forms in perspective. Don’t jump ship on a drawing in the face of challenge.

If it looks like shit, you tried, and probably learned something. If you didn’t, take a look at the final product and compare to reference and think about what went wrong, and don’t make the same mistake twice.

You don’t need to just study the basics, you can draw other things as well. And btw, drapery and 3D forms are basic.

Jump ship if you want to, but you won’t learn anything if every time there’s a challenge you say ‘I’m a beginner better stop’ and crawl into your hidey hole. You’ll just be drawing meh-ish anime forever.

I think you're doing good at trying to construct things. Conceptually you're on the right track of that makes sense. I like that you're adding perspective by overlapping things. That being said that kicking leg is at a really weird angle. It's turned way too far inward, it feels awkward. Also i would put a little more time into gesture. Your construction make it feel solid but it also feels hella stiff. Keep it up man.

Bro chill a bit. The firdt thing I notice is that your your value range is very small. This could be the because of the white background you choose. The background has a powerful influence on how you view the picture. Using a pure white background can be very distorting to the eyes so I suggest you try to use a grey or a muted colored background when you start or paint the base background color first before you start to color.

Then a good idea (if you haven't done so yet) is to make a color palette for the pieces of the image like the skin/hair etc. separately before you start mixing them together. That helps you to not get lost while trying to find the right colors and color values. Using palettes is not mandatory but they are helpful while learning or working.

I made this quick and simple little palette for you just quickly try and experiment with it. I added some darker values to the nose lips and eyes to show how different it is.

I know there is this dreadful feeling that when we have a nice bright shiny surface suddenly adding a dark spot to it feels like we are just ruining it. Do not let this feeling stop you it is okay it is natural and happens to everyone just relax in the knowledge that this is digital and you can go back at any time.

I hope this helped, if you got more questions just come back.

My advice to you anon is that you plan your portraits a bit more carefully. Better planning will save so much trouble later. It is not easy to plan and hit the things it taeks several revisions and even that is not a guarantee to get a good outcome. Look for general lines. Like you can make a line from the top of the front of the hat all the way down to the chin, and the half way point between those two looks roughly to be where the eyebrows are, and the half way point between the eyebrow line and the chin seem to be the nose, and the half way point from the nose to the chin is the mouth.
And look for shapes. You can roughly fit in the head plus hat into a rectangle if you look past the hat flaps and the nose.

My brush is a simple Square brush that is aligned towards the line direction with some pen pressure sensitivity settings, almost highest anti aliasing.

>Also any tips on lighting? This is only part of a larger image. Was going to play around with neon.
If you want Neon and wish to portray light then the best thing I would suggest is to start with the black/dark background (as the movie poster also had black base).

Painting a neon light means you need to have one a good control over how the value and color changes as on goes from light to dark. I admit I haven't painted neon but here is the idea. The light is diffused around the neon tubes as it reflects in the surface/air around it so it become a dark and de saturated color. While inside is a whit light that is colored by the color of the neon tube so at first it it whiter but as you go a bit darker it picks up color and thr color gets stronger until like halfway and then it started to loose its color again. You can also try to shift the color towards orange/yellow a bit as you approach the white and purple as you approach the dark.

Here is how I would imagine building up a neon thing I am sure there are better ways than this but it will give you an idea how it is put together.

While i don't know what you mean with the red and blue bit, i agree that you can have changing vertical vanishing points. But you can also see that the other sides of those boxes converge on the horizon. If a box in 3d space no matter its orientation were to move away from you towards the horizon, in the end it'll always vanish at the horizon because as things get farther away they appear to meet at your eye level.

Nothing, you're a beginner. You didn't do too bad. Focus less on construction, once you get the basic form established, and look at the masses and planes.

There are some beautiful S curves in that piece, the artist who made it has a great eye. Try to look for them, look for the gesture they were going for, the sinuous curves from the angle of the hips and shoulders. (Remember, an S curve can be backwards)

I'll give you one, for free: start at the lower left, and look at the implied S curve that flows from the hip, across the torso to the bottom of the rib cage, and then flows back left up through the arm. It's echoed in the contour on the back, on the right of the rib cage. That's the gesture.
Now look at your drawing, and figure out how to put that flow, that S curve, into the drawing, using the planes and shapes of the body. Focus less on photographic accuracy, and feel the form.
Loomis/construction for the block shapes.
Then build the flow on top of that.

Make sense? Don't worry, keep at it, it will.

Try it again. Look at the contours. Measure. Look. Find the form, the tension, the flow. It'll take you a while to learn how to do it, but that's what it's all about.

Yes, the "background's horizon" tells us where the viewer is, based on that location all the other elements are built around the viewer. For figures, it's not generally worth it to construct a "correct" box for each limb (I've tried). You're better off using very simple, flat boxes to construct the largest elements and let your intuition do the rest.

toes could use some work, they look so short. it also feels like your upper body is a little too short. the neck is also different in the ref. and it looks like the part of the leg below the knee is a little short.

thank you for taking the time to critique my lines! I gave the feet some more length, and the toes and knee some work, while extending the lower legs, and moving the knees a bit into the quads.

The upper body definitely benefited from a little uplifting, and I tried to make the neck a bit more leaning into the head from the trap, and give it some length - I hope this is what you were talking about, I'm not entirely sure if it works?

>>3878555
I'll try giving it a go if you think so - would you suggest starting out with grayscale to get a proper feel for values, or go for colors immediately?

Not really. I screwed up the lines in a lot of places, made the armor pieces look flat and couldn't add any folds, so it doesn't look right at all. That's not a costume, that's just shit. Besides, the pose is dopey and the face is too long. The perspective is also kinda weird, and I'm not sure the anatomy is correct. I need to redraw the whole thing from scratch.

good shit anon! Here is how I would add to it. I think the torso is too big compared to the hips and below, I am not sure you wanted to create perspective with it or not if yes then I am not feeling it. I shrunk the torso and upper body a bit.

The gun between the legs feels flat I get that the thighs are thick and meats and can grab it between them but I am not seeing the deformation of the flesh or anything that indicates it. I pulled them apart a bit and shifted the position the closer leg a bit.

The rest are just minor changes, I pulled the shoulder down as she is reaching down to hold the barrel, I had a feeling that the air is moving towards the rights so I shifted some hair and clothing around to make the sleeve baggier and make the bottom of the coat a bit more into perspective.

Hope that helped. Otehrwise it is looking pretty good, hope to see it develop.

YOOO! this was exactly the help I was looking for, thanks man! Definitely gonna take your approach on the mini skirt area,
makes it feel less flat and helps show the flow of motion a lot more!
Yeah after I posted that image I changed her right shoulder to around where you put it. I think I was overcompensating on that with her uniform.

I haven't smoked in a while but for a time, when I would run out of an idea, I would just get high af and go to town with paper and pencil, then clean it up digitally. For some reason when I'm stoned, my inhibition is gone and I'm not afraid I'll mess up the drawing so I just try stuff and add so many more details than I normally would that seem to come from nowhere. With this one, I ended up making a 3d model out of it that I'm really happy with. Not encouraging you to smoke by the way, I quit but it did put you into the flow state.

I think i start to slowly understand values but i rly need to study and work with colors i feel like my colors are always all muddy. Also anatomy is not perfect at all left arm looks fucked i should change it.
