Hi all!

I need feedback and opinion on this concept ;) .

I'm in the middle of my new project. It will be 3d real-rime character in futuristic/cyberpunk convention. She's a freelancer/mercenary/enforcer to hire. Not nessesary a gun to hire, but someone who make thinks done. I'm stuck on clothes concepting. I made few iterations across 2 months but I'm still not certain about this design.

I will be very glad for your opinions, feelings about concept, feedback, tipsand criticue. I'm not a professional concept artist but I want to go throught whole creation process this time. Feel free to post what's on your mind :) .

Maybe add tattoos? Scars to indicate fighting experience. Cybernetic thingies, like robot eye or a replacement arm? Maybe add a little accent color to her clothing or hair?

Just some ideas for you anon.

Also put a smiley face somewhere on her body too? Like in pin form or tags, pattern? Just to connect her better with her weapon.

This is why I hate "concept art". You're trying to make a thing for an idea that is dead on delivery. This kind of futuristic cyberpunk is a dead horse that has been beaten to a fine pulp, so no matter what you do with this character it's going to look like trash.

In my opinion, you have to go against the grain and be extremely specific, and you have to be bold with things, you have to try a thing is so original it might fail. Butch lesbian with a trashy haircut is your default sci-fi heroine at this point. Make her a pretty girl.

Look at this design by Masahiro Ito, it's so cool and interesting. It's attractive but not too attractive, the shape of the eyes and nose is strange. You need to look at it like you're casting an actress.

Also if you want to go with accessories, try to make them stand out. "Give her a cybernetic arm", but it's a regular sci-fi cybernetic arm that looks like a perfectly normal arm is super lame and won't save your design. Give her some bulky outdated piece of hardware.

If you want to give her a tattoo or a scar, make it significant. Put it somewhere weird, make it really large like she survived being cut in two, make it look like "holy shit this must've been ugly". If it's a tattoo make it something pretty, like it's a childhood memory or something that this person hangs on to keep her sanity, not an edgy meme like a smiley face. That's how you put story into a character. You have to write the character first before you draw her.

Yes, being generic is problem. So far this my attempt to be "not generic but fall into convention". Good thoughts, thanks. I don't know if i will try to make it "on the edge" but I will try in another procent. I'm trying to close this one becouse I'm sick of it. Thanks!

For clothes I can't help you, I'm terrible at them. Especially when it's military outfits they're gonna look very much the same. Just pay attention to some detail, say, those boots? You probably wouldn't have them in a military context, I have read somewhere that military boots need to have shoelaces all the way because if you get a leg injury, someone can cut the strings off with a knife and easily pull them away before you bleed out. So maybe go a little crazy with the boots design but stay compliant with realism. That's how I would do it. I'm sure there are directives with all pieces of military clothing that need to be made in a certain way. I would absolutely not go with the random knobby / tactical look though, I'd make them very plain and slick. Maybe put in some color like a bright orange?

He’s right though, the whole point of a concept artist is to be original and interesting with your ideas and designs. Your skills as an artist need only take you as far as you need to properly express those ideas, your skills in design however need to be top notch, and pushing things into bold new directions.

The last thing you wanna do is the sane thing everone has done a million times. You’re more of a writer/storyteller than you are an illustrator, you’re paid for your imagination,

And if your imagination is only as good as copying generic tired crap, then you’re no good as a concept artist/designer.

Familiar is fine so long as it’s different, has a new twist to it,

He said nothing about what a concept artist does. He basically said "Cyberpunk is shit and therefore your character is shit."

>the whole point of a concept artist is to be original and interesting with your ideas and designs.
>And if your imagination is only as good as copying generic tired crap, then you’re no good as a concept artist/designer.

Is that why every big budget video game/movie is visually almost the same in their respective genres with some minor barely noticeable tweaks? Cause if that is true then 99% of the world best concept artists that work on these projects are just plain terrible and that is just plain not true.

In one side you need to be original and creative, on the other studio owners want to "sell" product better, so they force stuff to more generic and easy to spread around. Familiarity is needed but it's also sad to see so much repetition around :( . I'm not a concept artst btw, just my observation.

You won't stand out if you don't sell your ideas as a concept artist. You're an artist first, a concept artist second. Probably the most iconic monster design in movies has a dick for a head and the execs were absolutely against it. They had to fight the execs to hire Giger, they had to fight execs to put the Space Jockey scene in. In the end, the most respected concept artists are still people like Wayne Barlowe who are always original and everyone else tries to copy them after he makes yet another memorable design. On a smaller scale, the people who made Mass Effect had no idea that the Quarian girl would get so many fans. You gotta push your ideas and insist on them I think, if you are a yes man you'll stay a yes man. Believe in your art.

I mean I'm probably completely wrong but if I had to go about it as a concept artist, I'd try ideas that stand out. Maybe I'll fail completely, but it's better than doing something safe. And in general it's always better to try very diverse, strange designs and maybe tone them down.

The yellow shirt is good in theory not great in practice, it would make her too visible if you were to imagine her within the world your creating. Id say keep the top a dark blue, and add a brighter yellow stripe. Also whats the reason for the hand guard? And the straps on her legs. In design everything you put needs to serve a purpose, especially if shes a fighter, extra straps would just weigh her down. Also think more about the world your character is in. Is she part of a team? Whats her background like? Whats the reason for the smiley face? Build a good idea of your character before you even touch pen to paper, it'll make it easier to design a character if you do this first.

Sorry for the long paragraph hope it helps :)

I think it's OK since OP said it's a mercenary / enforcer and I assume it's an urban setting instead of a serious soldier in a war zone. Actually I'd push it further and make a bright orange / yellow the main color. If you paint some nice logo on it you can push it as a gang thing and play it out the scare/recognizability factor, like "she's one of the Red Suns, those guys are tough stuff" or something along those lines.

Inspiring paragraph :) . I have no dedline, I'm doing it for myself. But I streachet it across 2 months already. Looking better but I need to close for good. I modelled body and now deciding if clothes are good enought.

>>3873803
Most of stripes are sewed on material as decoration. I added colorfull shirt to meke her look more casual/urban, becouse she's not a hitman or assasin but more of a solo-frelanceer. I will change it for red, I felt like she need a strong color accent to emphasize that she's a kind of adventurer.

>>3873813
That's what I was thinking. Interesting print woud be nice :) . I want her to be more of a lonewolf than a gangster.

Just an idea, but I would check out "Vory tattoos" and "Thief-in-Law". They are prison tattoos used by Russian gangsters and they mean all sorts of stuff

>The letters "OMУT" (omut; deep water hole) on the back of the hand indicate "it's hard to get away from me" (oт мeня yйти тpyднo, ot menya uyti trudno)
I would use this one as print on a chestplate, maybe vertically like pic related? Not sure if I'd use an industrial print or just have it painted on more roughly like a homemade job.
>The word "CEBEP" (sever; north) on the back of the hand indicate time done in a Northern prison (Siberia, or Magadan)
You can probably do something with these. Try stuff out.

>You're an artist first, a concept artist second
Designer first, concept art doesnt even have to be drawn at all it can literally be a photo collage or a shit stain on a toilet roll as long as the goal is achieved, you are just using any means necessary to reach the desired result, all the real art work comes once your design direction gets approved and you start polishing.

OP needed to do a lot more exploration before landing on that image, the image he posted and even the later one would be a step or so afterwards, this character has no character, theres nothing about this character that would separate her from generic incidental #45

>She's a freelancer/mercenary/enforcer to hire. Not nessesary a gun to hire, but someone who make thinks done

Make her feel that way, does that character scream that feeling to you when you look at her, PUSH the designs as far as you can, its easier to tone it down afterwards to fit in.

Just for fun I made a character (traced your model). I went for a Japanese vibe and it's just a sketch so I put very little research on the mechanics of the arm, should have spent some time but even just making it a bit bulky gets the idea across.
Tried different patterns / textures and put a print on the chest armor saying 突撃隊 (Totsugekitai) which is something like "Sudden Assault Corps" but you get the jist. Doodled some Koi carp looking tattoo on the arm, french braid for some dissonance, etc.
Maybe too colorful for cyperpunk but you can always tone it down.

Haha also always double check the symbols you use or invent. I googled 突撃隊 as an afterthought, and it turns out it's the Japanese name for the Nazi SS. Whoops.
