Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

The way you shade your values is flat. I think you're still at the level of copying the shadows as flat shapes and not thinking about light and form yet and why the shadows are what they are, what kind of structure they're conveying, and so on. Take the next step and learn how light form value work. Proko has some vids on this on youtube, and there are some basic tutorials on form and value.
Aside from that, there are proportional issues here and there but overall good job. Keep it up.

Don't go for the messy style because right now it's just being done to hide the issues. Measurements and symmetry are all over the place, which look worse because of the mess. The shape of the features are not at all matching the reference. The shadows and highlights are placed randomly. You can still achieve a messy and minimalist aesthetic by working clean and precise in the beginning. Simplify the face down to its most basic parts. What are the main areas of shadow? What is their shape?
If you want to use that black streak brush, use it on the shadows areas like the neck, beneath the browridge, under the nose, shape of the upper lip, etc. The black should be used to emphasize the shadows that way you still get the form. Then place your highlights on the opposite areas of the shadow. The ref also has a gradient where the top half of the face is brighter than the bottom half. How do you show this in your painting with those different shades of blue you have?

does anyone work exclusively on a single layer? i have a problem where every time i draw a sketch i have several dozen copies of it with various changes i have made to it (i make a copy each time because i'm scared i'll regret it down the line)
that's just sketches, theres still lineart and all the color shit
lineart is my kryptonite, i redo 90% of the strokes i make, several times per stroke. i have been trying to learn other methods of drawing like rendering straight from a sketch, in order to avoid having to do lineart. i'm still completely shit at that too.
i don't know what my endgame is, i have no idea what sort of style i am building towards. drawing is more often stressful than fun when you spend a few days putting off doing it because youre scared to fail, and when you actually do it you're shit.
i think ill just go back to focusing on lineart. the thing is my sketches are always better, so it might be better to just clean my sketches rather than try to do a new lineart layer
pic unrelated, just an old sketch i found

Personally I think drawing from imagination is something you should be doing all the time for a healthy and balanced "art diet" and is necessary to keep yourself happy with your art. I always have one day at the end of the week dedicated as a 'fun drawing day' where i don't worry about studying new concepts or practicing and instead just have fun drawing whatever i want, which in most cases is from imagination and can be considered synonymous with 'fun day'. It's great for experimenting with concepts i learned that week while getting me to use them together more, solidifying the information better, while also reinvigorating my passion for drawing because it provides me the freedom to just draw, which releases any tension or frustration that usually comes from harder more focused studying.
How often you set aside the time for 'fun drawing' is really up to you.

The second one is coming out fin on the shadow side now add more lighter tones gently. But correct the part where the cloth stripe is, gives of the feel of having "triple ass." Which could be intentional if that is someone's fetish but not relevant to this image.

She is a qt!

I would suggest a few things when dealing with poses. Gesture (obviously) to give the pose a basic flow which will help you achieve the next things which is Balance, make the character is more or less standing in a way that she isn't tripping over (too much) On your I put the legs slightly wider to help this because she is leaning towards the left. A good rule of thumb it to match the feet positions with the shoulder positions. Finally perspective, make sure you curve the parts up/down the right way. The feet usually curve strongly downwards unless it is a lower or far away shot which squishes the perspective.

Would also suggest anatomy but that is a no brainer so I'll skip that.

Ok this is a but long to explain for this board but I'll try.

The center of gravity/center of weight is the point where the body's balance point is. If that is not properly supported by something it will fall over easy to understand right. What is important to get with a standing pose is that it is roughly balanced otherwise it will convey the effect that it is in motion, which is not wrong but that is for moving falling poses, if the body is in motion then it doesn't need to be supported of course, The key is to arrange the body in a way that it is standing balanced without falling over (Unless you are aiming for that).

On the feet, this is a perspective question. The rules goes that the rather you are from the horizon line the more you see shape's base in the case of a cylinder this is a circle, in the case of feet it is a the soles. The angle of the soles compared to the body is an indicator of how far you are from the person because the closer you are the steeper the perspective gets. Making the feel angle more down gives of the feeling of being closer provided you adjust the body's perspective to it and can draw the eyes to the focal point of the body. You can try this if you have full body mirror stand close and then stand far and look at your feet and look at how the angle changes as your perceive the ground in the mirror the closer you move the more steep the angle will be. The exaggerated perspective can give it a more 3d feel but that is not necessarily needed or accurate.

You are welcome just don't go overboard with it, consider the horizon line and your reason for putting it low or high. If you put it high it will give the feeling of looking down to the character which communicates that the character is small/short and puts the character into a more friendly vulnerable position compared to the viewer. Likewise if you put the horizon line low and make the viewer look upwards to the character that gives the feeling that the character is taller/powerful and is in a dominant potion.

Remember, these are not always hard and stone carved rules pictures are way more complex than this but they are effective to convey emotions with your picture by using the perspective and the fundamental emotions the point of view convey to the viewer.

Good artists don't chiken scratch. Watch some Jim Lee videos to see the difference. When he seemingly chicken scratches he is actually building the volume and guides to show to himself where and how to ink.

That's the difference between sketching and chicken scratch - in a sketch lines have a purpose.

>> No.3873509

I repeat the same thing every time someone brings up chicken scratching: it's not inherently bad, IF it's done intentionally. Most of the time when you see /beg/s chicken scratching, it's because they CAN'T draw any other way. You don't want your toolbox to be limited, you want to be able to make any kind of line you want and then choose what's appropriate for the situation.

Chicken scratching is fine in an exploratory sketch, part of the point of sketching is that you don't know what the end product is supposed to look like so some of your lines will be correct and some won't and you'll have to draw over them. But try inking a page for a comic book with chicken scratch technique and see how that works out. It's all about choosing the appropriate tool to get the result you want.

Hi! I just got a recommendation to post in this thread. I have a dedicated thread bu I will try this one also.

I need feedback and opinion on this concept ;) .

I'm in the middle of my new project. It will be 3d real-rime character in futuristic/cyberpunk convention. She's a freelancer/mercenary/enforcer to hire. Not nessesary a gun to hire, but someone who make thinks done. I'm stuck on clothes concepting. I made few iterations across 2 months but I'm still not certain about this design.

I will be very glad for your opinions, feelings about concept, feedback, tipsand criticue. I'm not a professional concept artist but I want to go throught whole creation process this time. Feel free to post what's on your mind :) .

your lines should always have a clear direction and intention. if you have to scribble a form until something competent appears, go for it, but you can't leave it at that. you have to have some indication of a single direction. if it's too ambiguous, as in "chicken scratching", it's just poor and you never had a well thought out drawing in the first place.

By making lines thicker you can imitate shadowed areas. Also Thicker lines accent main form, whitch is most importand. Thiner lines are seen secondary and usually give some subtle details, things to catch eye on later. When everything is messy, the form is not defined, it's foggy. It's often also a way to hide mistakes (when someone is not able to draw something, he made a bunch of random lines to imitate form). Putting every line is a decision making, good use of it can improve artwork.

>> No.3873559

>>3872808
But remember that loose, messy sketchy form can be very expressive and interesting. There is no "god or bad thing" in art, It's just a decision making. If you make something by a reason it will improve your artwork. If it's just a randomness it usually weakens efect. Not saying that randomness is bad :) .

Can anyone give me some advice on pencil brushes while sketching in photoshop? Trying to get my digital workflow down

I don't much like the actual "pencil" tool because it doesn't seem to react to pressure from the stylus, so I downloaded a few pencil brushes. What I didn't realize is that they actually mimic a real pencil in that they get thicker over time so you "sharpen" them by reselecting the tool. I was really annoyed to discover this as it was so gradual I didn't realize until I'd lost my original lines to the later, thicker ones.

Surely there's some simple pencil or brush that everyone uses for a loose construction/mannequinization phase and I'm just retarded? Bullying welcome on my shitty heads. Thank you

It appears you want to learn to draw in an anime or cartoony style.

This begins by learning traditional forms so you know the human body, perspective, and shapes so well that you can then take that knowledge and use it to make anime/cartoon representations.

You will never get more patient. Patience and motivation are for idiots.

What you want is discipline. FORCE yourself to slow down, think, visualize, meditate, and read. You can keep looking for the magic way to get patience, or you can force yourself to be patient, until it is muscle memory.

A good exercise based on your drawing would be Drawabox. Google it. There's a 250 box challenge that will get you started (BUT FIRST READ THE LESSONS BEFOREHAND, AND PRACTICE.) You will need to read for hours, sit and think, and take regular breaks. And remember to think and listen, and forget what you know. You know nothing.

This will teach you to take your time, and get rid of that furry line you're drawing in favor of a more powerful line, with purpose.

Take the Drawabox knowledge, and then apply that to 3D human (real human, not art or anime) forms. Every fifth full-bodied person (even the hard parts - hands, feet, faces, etc) look at an artist you like, and copy the form one time. Then, apply their style to a picture of a real person. Do this for as many hours a day you can. I try at least 2.5 - 5 hours daily, and am improving painfully, but quickly.

That sounds like it's hard, doesn't it?

Learn discipline. Force yourself to work. Make pain your friend.

Or, don't. Without discipline and hard work for hours on end - spent studying reality - you will never improve.

When you have mastered reality, you can use your mind to create your own style of anime or cartoon. AFTER you master the perspective, forms, and volume reality confines you to.

But it will be painful.

Trying to get a better handle on 3d form and proportions in 3d space.

Any advice welcome, thank you.

I have a friend who I think is good at art or has the potential to be good but he refuses to use construction and can't make sense of the underlying construction pics I've shown him. He prefers to just draw as he thinks things look, and I think he's generally pretty close but I dunno, there's just something slightly off about his figures, they look kind of flat.
I can't really post his work because I'm pretty sure he browses here and I don't want to be a dick when I can't even say why specifically I think things are wrong.
Any good books or videos I could watch to try and introduce the value of constructing figures to him?

Can someone help me with proportions? I see very different ways of doing people and I'm wondering which is really best.

I see some people using 7 in their art (mainly anime) but loomis recommends stuff like 8 for heroic figures and 7.5 for fashion ones iirc.

I guess another question would be if I really have these correct. Once the head is setup as the basic unit do I then do half the head for the neck or another entire head for the neck + upper torso?

I've been grinding through Drawbox for a week now, just a few hours a day whenever I have time.

Finally sat down and took a break from that just to do some drawing, first time since starting Drawbox.

I did the figure on the left in about 15 minutes compared to the figure on the right I did before drawbox that took me like 40 minutes. Most of that was just trying to get the lines down on the page.

Anatomy is a complete wash so any suggestions would be appreciated. Still going over Loomis.

Page 39 of "Fun with a Pencil", he tells you how to construct the head.
I've been reading this over and over, but I just do not understand.

"Divide middle line into four parts that appear equal to half the distance from Browline to top of ball."

Where do you start counting the four parts? Is it from the brow line, or hair line? I assume it's the brow line, but he only illustrates 3 lines from the brow, that confuses me.

"Slice off sides by dropping earline straight down"

What? Drop it straight down, that's it? How the fuck do you even know where to put the oval signifying that the side of the head is "chopped off"?

"Middle line and earline are now parallel"

No they aren't, the top of the middle line bends, the earline doesn't. Does he mean just in the middle? And what am I supposed to learn from this fact?

"The eyeline now drops below the "equator" which is now the brow line".

Where did the eyeline come from? He hasn't mentioned this previously, how do you calculate how big the eyeline should be compared to the other lines? (Brow, nose and chin lines)

"Establish noseline in middle of plane to run around to ear. Ear fastens on at intersection of eye and ear lines. Plane stops just short of ear. Top of ear touches browline. The skull protrudes slightly from ball at back of head. It's easy."

Most of the instructions here makes perfect sense, I can follow them. But what "plane" is he mentioning? Where does it come from, what is it even? What is it used for?

Good shit Anon ink is hard so it is good that you are pushing it! Are you the mob psycho Anon that posted his stuff in the past btw?

You do not need to save it, it is not that bad just unfinished. The head is bit too small especially the face area but it passable for animu If you are doing ink you ended a LOT of ink. Add more shadows to make the shapes more apparent and cohesive. Currently you have patches that do not fit together into a whole that is what makes you and the viewer feel lost.

How about this?

if you aren't planning to cross to digital, you should atleast do something about that ink quality. What pen did you use for this? Why does it look crude? Did you draw small? You might want to draw larger next time because you can only put so much details on a small sized drawing and your nib size.

> I assume it's the brow line, but he only illustrates 3 lines from the brow, that confuses me
3 lines divide middle line in 4 parts, what confusing about it?
>How the fuck do you even know where to put the oval signifying that the side of the head is "chopped off"?
look at the image, top of the ellipse is the same height as hairline, bottom is on the same height as nose line
this is where your knowledge of perspective and construction should come in, read Scott Robertson's book posted above on it
>Does he mean just in the middle?
yes; no matter how you turn the head these lines will never intersect on paper
>And what am I supposed to learn from this fact?
Loomis prefers to teach by showing, not by telling, you are not the first person to complain about it; if it bothers you too much you can try any other tutor, Loomis isn't some universal messiah for everyone
>Where did the eyeline come from? He hasn't mentioned this previously, how do you calculate how big the eyeline should be compared to the other lines? (Brow, nose and chin lines)
it's about 1/3 of the distance between brow and nose lines (closer to brow line)
>But what "plane" is he mentioning?
that the contour line around the face on the same height as nose line, used to roughly describe form of the cheeks and give the sketch clearer form

1) maybe not sure

>What? Drop it straight down, that's it? How the fuck do you even know where to put the oval signifying that the side of the head is "chopped off"?
2 )maybe not sure

>No they aren't, the top of the middle line bends, the earline doesn't. Does he mean just in the middle? And what am I supposed to learn from this fact?
3) I think this is what he means

>Where did the eyeline come from? He hasn't mentioned this previously, how do you calculate how big the eyeline should be compared to the other lines? (Brow, nose and chin lines)
4) The eyeline is usually at the halfway between the top of the head and bottom of the chin. Not clear from this but he may have mentioned it in the previous pages

>Most of the instructions here makes perfect sense, I can follow them. But what "plane" is he mentioning? Where does it come from, what is it even? What is it used for?
5)I think this is what he means because he refers to p41 where he adjust "the plane".

This is what I think he means but could be wrong.

The chair will have 2 vanishing points. You can use something like pic related to figure out where they are. With 1-point perspective the 45 degrees rotation vanishing points are on equal distances from the middle. How close they are to the middle decides how much distortion you have.

Chicken scratching is bad if you're drawing, because the lines matter, but sometimes the lines themselves aren't that important, like if you're going to add a lot of paint on top.

First you have to decide if you want to draw in a semi realistic style or not.
Second: The volumes and tonal values are wrong. You CAN have darker shadows on your drawings, don't be afraid to use them. Your shadows are going to be defined by the light direction and the objects form. Sometimes you will need well defined shadows (with sharper borders like around the nose, ears, hair and tail), and sometimes you will need softer shadows (with softer borders or gradients, like on the legs and near the forehead).
There is also a problem with your head format, that I fixed in blue.

fix the lines to straight, as someone said. also you see here, i compare the colors side by side, yours are very dark. milk in the glass is the whites part of the things, but yours looks like gray, that is not good. also the inside of the mug is a lot lighter, because it is a white coloured mug, even if it is on the shade.

So doing drawbox and I'm not sure if I should try and progress or grind some of the current exercises a bit.

I'm up to 'Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes:
Rotated Boxes'

While I'm grasping the concepts so far I'm still finding it hard to draw perfectly straight lines free handed. Especially when they need to form a box that doesn't look wonky.

Should I grind until I can draw a box that looks like a stable object or push on with the lessons and just grind a previous lesson as warmups for 30 minutes a day.

Dude you are fighting a good fight and that is great. however it feels to me that your fighting is confused. Please, look into the usage of composition and using gesture. That will help you to alleviate the stiffness you feel in your poses and the usage of background elements.

Here I tried a redraw and then some pointers one what I placed the things I did to help the composition then the gesture which isn't good I admit but I tried to make it more dynamic.

If you have question then ask them.

Man you keep helping me out so much, I gotta get it right. I'll grind a few dozen gestures, it's great to see how you applied it. And apparently composition is about creating a flow, now I understand those arrows you've done before, I'll be sure to include arrows when thumbnailing. I didn't want to copy your floating ghosts idea but it seems like the best idea to fill the page since I can't do full zombies with the lolita already filling most of the scene. I'll try not to, though. Composition and gesture, got it.

Just wanted you to know I'm trying to fully absorb this and I can't think of any questions, I need more raw practice instead of trying to make pretty pictures.<div class="like-perk-cnt">&#x274C;</div>

I'm retarded, so I have a retarded question. What exactly is an art study, and how do you do one?

>> No.3876232

>>3876226
An "art study" is taking a topic and making a drawing of it with the sole purpose of analyzing and learning about it, the key is not working from imagination but sticking strictly to the the subjects. Most of the time this means making a copy of the subject by hand, this can be a study of literally anything. Something from real life, human, animal, object or the study of another artist's work/style. One could add noted to their study to note down findings
You can read the wiki as well if you want

Looks a lot like the lines you would get with Paint tool SAI, maybe it is drawn digitally.

Notice the use of gradients in the hair, there is a gradient applied in post too, but the ones in the hair seem to be applied in the coloring stage.

The eye spacing seems to use 1.5*eyewidth in (most of the) background characters.

I myself don't adore this look in anime, but it would fit a thriller anime very well.

Is this psycho pass? Just a guess, I don't watch that much more mainstream anime.

Just my observations.
