does anybody here have any resources/insight or information on progressing beyond the mannequin stage of drawing? This is really fucking hard even when you have studied anatomy. I've read "the marvel way" as well as the books recommended in the sticky but found no advice on how to actually do this. It's sort of a "draw the fucking owl" type situation.

Ive been researching John Buscema and Frank Cho and Jim lee, people who can just sketch and draw figures without reference. But they mostly just showcase their talents and literally never explain how they do this.

trace a fuck ton and then you will be able to put the information from your head (if its there in the first place) easier on paper

is this legit? Is all I need to do is trace over people?
Because i'll try it if you're serious. Nothing is off limits to me right now i am at a fucking wall.

trace over works of your favorite artists, if they are only sketches its ever better. there exist whole artbooks of various artists and settei stuff too (which is a good ref for memory drawing too)

Try this: pick a couple of characters and draw them in an environment interacting with each other somehow. Figure out their basic poses, then go find reference from photos and other pieces of art to help you draw the characters. Now do this many many times, different characters in different environments until you need to look up very little reference.

but finalize sketches, not the messy ones, thats just the artists experimenting so I dont see what you gain from that

but feel free to try it, maybe it will teach you to have looser more free lines

Similar question to op, how the fuck do I draw two characters interacting without it looking weird? The mannequin phase always ends up looking like a convoluted blob of shit.

Ngl I've found porn to be really helpful with getting better at character interactions, especially when trying to put focus on both character instead of just drawing a disembodied dick going up a pussy. For me its useful to be really loose and gestural in the sketch phase, and think more about how the shapes and gestures of the characters interact with each other before going into construction.

Thanks anon, I'll have to try that out sometime.

I'm struggling with that too. Other than what anon above said, from what I've gathered it has to do with having a good sense of space.
When you start drawing the mannequin you don't focus on the perspective. You build up the mannequin and that starts to define your perspective. If you are not cognizant of the way perspective comes into being once you do this, you won't be able to believably add other things in the scene. After you draw the first character you are shackled to a perspective.
So either start out by planning your perspective, or figure it out after you draw the first character and then use that to draw everything else.
Doing studies like this might help.

Tracing advice is crabbing, they're trying to waste your time.
If you do this kind of mannequin in pic related you simply build the muscles on top of the bones. I start with the deltoids going between biceps and triceps, for the legs I draw the rectus femoris and the vastus lateralis then I attach the adductor in the inner thigh.
Get an anatomy atlas, I recommend the apps made by https://www.catfishanimationstudio.com/

What does "progressing beyond" mean? Does it mean drawing convicing figures from imagination? Does it mean drawing photorealistic skin? Be specific.

That guy is trolling you. Tracing does very little, you need to be drawing from imagination.

Tracing is valid for illustration. When wise people mean trace they don't literally mean trace the outline but superimpose a base and use your knowledge of the figure to construct on top. For things like comics though using tracing for everything will slow you down, especially when you just should be drafting first.

The pro uses "crab advice" while the novice thinks it's pure to never rely on technology advancements in expressing oneself.

Tracing is valid if you're on a deadline and you're speeding up your process. It's not a learning tool.

Now you're just coming up with some restrictive rule someone said online and you're now just parroting it. Do what you want.
