Depends on the medium you want to use. For watercolour i'd go for somehing with at least 120 g/sqm, for pencil works I'd go for something with a stable binding so the drawings don't smear as much. For marker and ink it's important that the paper doesn't bleed through and that there is no feathering.

I remember there was a sketch section on ConceptArt forums where you could post your stuff to track progress.
I wonder if there are any art sites like these nowdays that I could use in a similar manner, excluding deviantart ofcourse.
I don't like 4chan for this reason too.

the distortions are made in very interesting ways and I love how you've captured the dissapointment. I feel like the title kind of implies your art isn't good enough to reflect the disappointment, I however think the best thing about this drawing is the tense disappointment looming over the portrait and it speaks for itself.

>>3848036
I love the diverse assortment of lines. A little bit of chickenscratch but you've got lots of varied thickness and intensity. Like how the hair in the back is flowy, almost non-visible. How you've textured the hair and various parts. The lines in the face are also very juicy probably the best part of the sketch.

However I see there's two seperate crutches you're using.

1. The perspective is an absolute profile, which is a way of avoiding the entire process of making forms feel 3D and actually occupy space.

2. Missing arm. Avoiding drawing hands comes in many, many forms. And robotic prosthetics are one of those.

>>3846900
this is great! The pose and the tail work together to make a beautiful shape and accompanied by a pleasing silhouette it comes together as a bomb ass sketch. Also the rhythmic shading / texturing gives it a unique character.

>>3846864
Love the lettering. Shading and highlight look pretty good especially the left and top side of fishchick, though as a whole it's missing some depth. The angler dude looks killer. 5/7 would have sex with them both.

You read me like a book. I've a habit of drawing in complete profile and it's holding me back.

I also have trouble with hands; I'm not trying to make excuses for that one but its for a robot theme that some of my friends and I are partaking in.

I appreciate the feedback.

Great lines, great creation of surfaces. The intricate form of the glove is portayed nicely, though it is a bit hard to decipher what's what (like where is the thumb?). The depth of the photo is quite good. The integrity of the surfaces gives quite a good illusion of depth. However the hands are a little bit out of place.

The one closer to us is too high up to be turned that much counter-clockwise at the elbow (from viewer perspective) and the palm of the hand is turned uncomfortably far clockwise.

And the back hand seems like it's too long BECAUSE if it were to actually be straight, it would need to pass through the space where the back of the head is to look like that. So we automatically imagine it (or at least I imagine it) to take an inhuman curve around the head.

Honestly though this looks really good, has passion and feeling of being a finished product and as long as you keep doing your lines / surfaces / depth this well you'll only be stumped by problems like which the pros have themselves. Composition, subject matter, feeling, intensity, atmosphere and stuff like where the image draws the eye with faces, shapes and color etc.

When you spend the time drawing what you like, try to use it as an opportunity to incorporate and practice a new technique. Focus on something specific like shading, shape, or color theory.

And never spend too much time on one drawing. Draw it fast and draw it over and over and over again- and draw it again some more- then, when you’re really familiar with the subject, take your time on one drawing and compare what you started with.

Here's a doodle I made getting my license for work.
I brought a stainless steel thermos that inspired his chrome face.

The point of studies isn't really to make "pretty"drawings, but to commit as much useful information as you can about your subject to memory. Also to gain the experience of (re)constructing your subject repeatedly... So you can consistently "speedrun" it later.

Reference on your computer is good, but reference in your brain is better.

Thanks. Most important thing is that you have to be able to constuct basic forms in perspective or you're fukt. creatives are only valuable if we can create. Copying is fine but must be in service of creation. If you can't create and control forms in a defined 3D space [even one depicted on a canvas], you won't be able to BG, or draw any 3d forms consistently.

line weight is relative to distance from the viewer. closer = thicker line, farther = thinner/broken/no line

Most objects can be broken down into 1, 2, or 3 major forms. Objects farther away start to "merge" with each other - think about how "trees" become a "forest". Objects lose value range and detail as they move farther away. [Lighting and environmental factors may make this hard to observe when looking at a BG/photo, but it's true.]

The outermost silhouette is most important for identification, and this is probably the only thing you'll see on objects farthest away.

An object in closer to the viewer will have a higher value range, amount of detail, and line weight than the same object in the same spot viewed from farther away.

A person in the BG should not be more descriptively detailed than that same person in the FG and vice versa.

To learn faster, copy and attempt to recreate the art of pros. Once you can get something that works, you've got a good "recipe" for art in that style. In order for you to gain strength and value from it, you need to be able to apply it to as many different things and subjects as you can. That's why fundies are so important - they literally improve your ability to do EVERYTHING.

So naturally, they're ignored by meatballs who want to "draw anime" badly enough to make infinite threads about it, but not badly enough to actually work on their fundamentals.

[laughs in yoshinari]

Hello ! This is the anon that always draws traditional front facing pretty girls with mostly dead expressions and some detailed clothing. I’m the one that worked on the short hair armour girl.

I’ve decided to work on my weaknesses so I attempted to draw some kind of wise, strong sage character. I did a couple of quick anatomy studies (though not nearly enough to have significant improvement) and tried to come up with an idea for a character I don’t normally do, this is still some generic stuff but it’s a starting point. Criticisms are welcome

Break the body down into basic cylinders, cubes and spheres and think of wether these shapes are pointing away from the viewer or coming toward them. The planes visible on the cubes and cylinders should reflect that, and remember to wrap lines around these too to show their spatial shape. It is a good way of practicing perspective and remember to do this with some more dynamic poses or angles.

Thanks dude, it's a bit hard to give advice that would help you specifically without knowing what exactly you're struggling with, but I'll try and give things that really helped me. Also I suck at painting, so I'll only give advice for purely drawing mediums like charcoal or conte(which is what I use), though it really is the same fundamental information except adding hue/ color temperature. Blocking in shadow shapes with flat value sooner rather than later is good, it helps to see if you're proportions and alignments are correct. Learning the planes of the head helped me a lot for halftones, things sort themselves out in terms of value when you draw them out. You just figure out which plane is facing the light the most and go from there. Also for alignments draw a vertical line from the brow ridge to the outer most point of the lips (for the mid line of the face, but also the tilt of the head), and a line from the bottom of the orbits to the middle of the ear. For these don't try to guess, actually hold up your pencil and take the measurement/ angle. Hope that helps to some degree. I'm an idiot though so take it with a grain of salt.
