**If you make good copies of anime *properly*, you will be able to draw good anime. If you make bad copies of anime or bad anime styled drawings from photos, you will get better at drawing bad anime. Please think carefully about how you are studying.**

This is the thread for:

1. Posting your anime studies:
>Copy exactly but don’t do it aimlessly. Integrate drawing concepts (construction, color theory, tracing, etc.) into your studies in order to pull information from the reference (anime art, figurines, tutorials) that you can later use for your original work.
>Do a single study multiple times to ensure you address all of your mistakes and memorize the correct process in your head. Attempt drawing it from memory as well.
>You will only be able to effectively deviate from your reference after doing exact copy studies accurately and consistently.
2. General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

There's a transition from Loomis to anime in terms of proportions. Being able to construct form properly on paper is the takeaway from Loomis, regardless on your thoughts about his style. You take this core skill and tailor it to suit the style you're going for (this is when you diverge from Loomis)

I'm currently diving into Japanese resources to find the fabled nippon secrets, but even there I encounter our lord Loomis. They're called fundamentals for a reason, after all

Anybody else going back and forth with realism and anime style? I swear, I've been in a constant battle for like a solid year.
One week I'm thinking more realistic-ish style is my jam, but then one morning comes and I feel like anime is THE jam. And then vice versa.

I guess its nice to be more versatile, but I dunno, feels like I'm slowing down.

Another thing to add, the chin could be a bit more refined. Perfectly-pointed sharp chins don't really go well with most modern anime style. Just be more careful with the apex of the curve of the jaw, then soften the chin a bit and you'll be good to go.
I also did some subtle shifts with the cheek, but that's a bit of a personal taste I guess.

But isn’t the style consistent if everything is exaggerated, including the body ? I never notice people criticising style when it comes to the eyes being large, or the nose being too thin, but as soon as it comes to bodily anatomy everyone’s expecting the work to be realism. Don’t you think it would look weird if she had a strongly stylised anime face but completely realistic body ?

>muh style!
Okay I'll play the devil's advocate. Say it was done intentionally due to a cartoonish style to exaggerate form, so why is the entire illustration screaming realism when it comes to rendering, color, light, ambiance, and even atmospheric perspective? If you are trying to imply that this is a mash up between some love child between an anime character and a realistic person you're getting really desperate to find excuses here.

I'm not saying that successfully exaggerating proportions and forms can't be done but what I am saying is the fact that who ever did this piece failed to draw on the fundamental level this is not a matter of style; lack of fundamentals is not indicative of a style done on purpose it is just plain bad anatomy.

Honestly more 90% must be pushed into atleast picking up an anatomy book.

Another thing is lack of challenge. Other discords have weekly challenges where people who hate reading books are atleast motivated to put more effort because they're competing in weekly themed challenges, but there's nothing like that in the /beg/ anime discord.

My bad anon, I thought you were trolling.

Look, you need to understand real anatomy to understand WHY the body is being drawn like that, anime or not.
Plus, why the hell would you spend countless of hours learning somebody's wrong interpretation of anatomy? How could you spot correct-and-stylised anatomy in comparison to incredibly-wrong-and-awful-style anatomy?

You asking the question you did in >>3863807 makes me believe that you wouldn't know how to spot the difference. This gets easier to spot with time and knowledge (read: learning real anatomy).

Style comes AFTER learning basics, not before. If you do style first, you'll always be polishing a turd on paper. Don't be a fool, dear anon. Take the time and effort to do the right thing. Your future self will thank you.

I have been looking through >>3863450 this book atm. Usually these types of books are very word heavy and turn me off, but this one seems just right.

I guess I could try going to art school(I literally don't having anything else going for me right now.) I'm just worried it would teach me how to draw more western when, or I'll be turned away for my intrest in drawing anime.

I'm just trying my best to make something people can appreciate, and not feel like a failure. :\

Anon first of all you dont need to go to art school for anatomy. Nowadays you dont need it (sometimes it makes you even worse).

Just look for books by Richer, Bammes, Goldfinger, Bridgman, Peck, Simblet and other anatomy books on the artbook thread. There can't be a better time to learn now aince before you need to learn german/french just to get the meat of their lessons.

If you dont want to lose your love of anime, learn both fundamentals and anime at the same time. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, I would recommend drawing a loomis ("realistic") head, a anime head, then make a fusion on a head in between so you can borrow stuff from both and see what works for you.

>>3866558
I would personally practice traditionally using a fountain or brush pen. The stabilizer, contrary to what many believe, is really only a crutch if you fail to understand the underlying motivation for its existence. Stabilizers in CSP and Sai attempt to mimic the flowy feeling of brush pens by adding a slight delay to the lifting of the tip. They also average out your movements so the shakiness of your hand because less relevant to the cleanliness of the line placed. It also allows you to more accurately predict the movement of your stroke, since you can't really get a good and accurate representation of your brush tip digitally. In traditional brush pen work, the shakiness isn't much of an issue since you have an exact 1:1 placement of where you put your brush tip on paper to where ink is placed, allowing you to be much more accurate. However, if you attempt to, say, flick the pen at the end of a stroke, you'll see a similar effect seen with a stabilizer: the tip lifts from the page until it's eventually straight again, with the stroke tapering as the tip straightens and lifts from the page.

Doing this will give you not only a newfound appreciation for why the stabilizer is useful, but also give you methods of performing the same effects and techniques without using them.

What should I do to get better at using only line to represent something?

Pic sort of related. It's from a video about CSP, but I like how the artist is able to use so many different kinds of line to break up the head visually.

I never know when to use lost and found lines, or repeating "fuzzy" lines, or using the right thickness of lines. The picture might be a poor example, and I can make a better example when I get home from work, but hopefully someone might understand what I'm asking?

i like that you're experimenting with how far down to pull the chin from the sphere. i think you should draw a straight-on view to decide at exactly which height you want the chin to be (in proportion to the sphere). from that decision, you can pull it down further when drawing a view from above (looking down), and not pull as far when drawing a view from below (looking up), using the straight-on view as law

Waste of time. Draw freehand normally, then overlay your reference over your finished study to check the differences and mistakes you've made.
You'll learn so much more this way.

I'd personally do my checks by using this layer structure:
-[Study folder]
--Study drawing layer
--Opaque white bg layer
-[Reference layer folder]

After you set it up, you quickly flash your Study folder on/off (Of course, you'd do this after you've finished your study). This is by far the most accurate method to do checks that I know of.

congrats! You've reached the roastie basic bitch of anime shading. It's ok, but that's about it. For your next level up, please take into consideration that blondes don't really have their hair all yellow. It depends on the blonde color, but some turn to light brown the closer they get to the root or shadows. Then some parts also get saturated in some areas. The same with brown haired people. Their hair aren't just a uniform color of brown all over unlike what anime usually does to save time and cost.

I suggest you observe hair online and in real life.

Christ, I hate drawing purposefully on digital and I hate anime heads. They're unbelievably hard to get a grasp of. These are obviously a ""joke"" but it's clear I couldn't do one if I tried. I've been focusing too much on my fundies that I never made time to practice. All I want to do is be able to draw both ugly and appealing shit on purpose.

I've seen anime head guides and tutorials but they don't really explain a lot of what I see in anime or other people's interpretations of anime.

Really having trouble with the head, size of the head, placement of the facial features relative to the head, eyes, especially the ears and ear placement. Even though I understand where ears go, anime ears really throw me off. I guess it's a matter of practice. Anime heads are way bigger than they seem and it's so damn confusing sometimes. Especially when I can't find where the hair ends and the head begins.

I have a process where I try at something and when I realize I can't I usually exaggerate my errors in a ridiculous. For the top one I tried at the head shape and gave up at the ear and just added the rest. For the second one it's just me completely fucking around with the ridiculousness of a side-view anime head. The picture I posted isn't for critique or reference. It's just there to be there.

Aside from the joking I actually try a lot on paper and continually fail.
I was mostly looking for tips or decently explained tutorials on how stylization of anime heads or eyes typically work. Only reason I didn't post anything serious was because they're genuinely too bad of attempts to even post or critique.

Though if you want to know what I'm striving for, I've been studying the Panty and Stocking artbook. Really love the style and wish there was more to reference from.

>> No.3870731

>>3870724
it doesn't matter if there's not more to reference from if you can't even make use of what there is. learning to reproduce it is one of the best ways to dissect it. this is why you do a study from a reference up until the point where you can't see what looks wrong anymore.

if it constantly looks fucked up to you, then analyze what you fucked up, and then fix it. if you can't see what is fucked up (because your eye hasn't learned to distinguish shapes accurately enough yet to copy), then you post your attempt and the ref and we'll tell you what's fucked up.

you'll get the best tips when you are clear about what you're going for, and honest with your attempt.

if you want a quick tip, then it looks to me like you need to learn how to reproduce a drawing by measuring relative proportions with your eye.

>>3870731
I do make use of what I'm referencing and I've learned a lot through that. The point is that there are things I want to see the style in particular tackle so I can have a better understanding and solidify the connections.
Sort of like an anime head from a side profile. You wouldn't come up with it yourself, but it works and it simplifies it in a way that matches with everything else, also helping you understand the form in it's entirety.
But I guess that's part of being an artist and why you need to know how to view objects in 3D space(Which is something I don't have a problem with). Learning to improvise and come up with your own thing is part of the process. It's just nice to be able to understand how another artist might tackle it so that I can take that and put my own spin on it.

>then you post your attempt and the ref and we'll tell you what's fucked up.
The one I posted is entirely from imagination so I wasn't trying to copy anything in particular. Just what I've accumulated from my studies of the book.
>if it constantly looks fucked up to you, then analyze what you fucked up, and then fix it.
Yeah I do this, but I guess it's a matter of mileage and practice at this point.
>if you want a quick tip, then it looks to me like you need to learn how to reproduce a drawing by measuring relative proportions with your eye.
You're actually completely right, even after not seeing how terrible I am at copying. I realized this when gesture drawing. It's one of those skills that I've been trying to learn recently, although, admittedly, I've been slacking off because it's such a beast for me to tackle.

I know practice makes perfect but still I get uneasy. It's really annoying how irrational my mind gets even if I understand this.

>> No.3870750

>>3870731
>you'll get the best tips when you are clear about what you're going for, and honest with your attempt.
Also, this is a really big obstacle for me. I think it's an ego thing. I can't handle being terrible so I convince myself that I'm doing it in purpose. It definitely is a bad habit but I don't usually let that stop me. I make sure I'm very honest with approaches that I know won't reach the public. It's still something I need to work on because in some way, even if it's once every 30 practices, it can add up and ultimately affect the progress I make.
If I change this about myself I could change my mindset in the long run.

your heads suffer from microcephaly. The thing with anime is that you should know what your goal is and what style you prefer. It gets easier if you have an idol artist because you can just examine their shit. And since there are hundreds of animu artists drawing their own ideas of STYLIZED anatomy, if you don't have a goal, you're just going to get lost on what the fuck you're doing. For example, there are artists who delve closer to human anatomy. Their heads are on point with skull anatomy save for a few features they chose to alter because it appeals more to them to do them in that way. On the other hand, there are also artists whose heads go full forehead or eggnog. You gotta make it easier for you.

Good point. That makes too much sense. So pick a goal and focus on that, and then I can expand that once I have a solid foundation.

Always wondered what was wrong with them, but now that you say it I can see it clearly. I'll brush up on my proportions and come back at a later date. Thanks.
