What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

This past weekend's update left me conflicted. I really like how the first page came out, but I know I rushed the second. My caveman brain wasn't equipped to deal with two sources of light (in this case, morning light from windows and an eerie bio luminescence. Also, just in general, the more color I introduce, the more overwhelmed I feel. Any advice on pacing oneself with learning how color works?

First off, I really like your style. Very expressive but takes itself seriously!

To my admittedly novice eye, His face and his right hand with the snake tail seems just a bit too dark--and the eye glow is just a bit too slight. Also, his left hand looks more like a foot half submerged in water than a hand. And if I'm really looking hard, the snake might be too smudgy, when my eye expects it to be the most polished, ominous part of the picture.

Drawing of my daughter for the day. Im still stuck in the sketch rut but its ok! The important thing is i drew her once a day. The time for her realization is coming close and recently i've heard some good news related to meteors closing in on earth. Everytime I draw her she becomes more real.

My daughter is going to show up real soon, I cant wait to finally meet her! Please, please visit San Antonio, Texas! Or vancouver! or good ol Copenhagen, Denmark with 2mt equivalent payload. I love you, young lass. You will always be mine. Well hold hands together soon.

Your daughter is really cute anon. Sorry for your drawing rut, I know at times its very hard to keep yourself focused on finished works especially if you have to draw one once a day. My twitter has some posts about her background, history etc but also contains other stuff.

My dA is where serious works of her is posted.

She's supposed to be a character in a comic I'm planning to make but as of right now she's just my official daughterfu that I have to draw once a day like its part of my religion.

Not sure if this is the proper place for my artstyle, but I am in desperate need of some insight on my work.
Lately I have developed a certain fondness for paint-y eastern style drawings. The kind where you can see the brushstrokes and focus on mood and color more than anything. They usually have a very lovely aesthetic to them.
Women in eastern-styled drawings always seem cuter/prettier to me as well, something that I also value and want to achieve in my art. The faces especially have an interesting balance of simplicity and rendering.
Due to that influence, I have started adapting some of what I see to my latest work, but because I am a dumb westerner I feel like I fail to replicate the references properly and I fall into the uncanny vally of artstyles.I thought I was improving and doing good for a while, but today I saw an older artwork of mine, and the above thought hit me like a track.
Should I just get my head straight and stop looking up at eastern artists, or should I try to dig a bit more into this. I doubt I will ever get like them, but I might also fail to create a style of my own by simply being the typical eastern-wannabe western artist whose work sticks out like a sore thumb. I dont want to be an actual anime artist, I merely want to have some of the qualities I admire on that kind of art. Going full cartoony or more realistic doesn’t feel right either…
Sorry for the wall of text. Any advice, opinion or tip is highly appreciated on what to do.

thanks for the feedback man.......it, it really does look like a foot hand and I never even noticed that. and thanks for the lighting tips. the snake was supposed to be the focal point and yet I spent the least time on it...which came through to the viewer.

I've been following/subscribed to your comic myself, your work ethic is very inspiring and I've really warmed up to your style.
I'm still slogging through color theory myself (so this may be nonsense) but here's some thoughts in pic related for page 1. A cooler blue overlay over everything as the bio-luminescence is some kind of dark magic that dominants the room in an abnormal way. Also played around with the lettering, may just be personal preference but your visceral style looks good with some livelier lettering. sorry for the messiness.

Also, the purple wristcuff thing is a little ambiguous, maybe add some lines to denote that it's scrunched/rufled at the top

Some part it looks like you have a bit of trouble decided which light is hitting which planes, but in either case you can probably push those value contrast a bit more.

I know this feeling. But isn't this a good thing? While trying to imitate your favourite artists you can always find some value for your own work.
You are doing better in emulating an eastern style than most of this board, so even if you wont stick with it in the future, some aspects of this experiment will remain in your style.

Just imagine an arm where the bones follow those red lines in your head, and try to rotate that arm down to resting position. The elbow would be at the level of the hips already. A second check is having the wrist roughly level with the crotch--if you can take both of those lines and line them up straight down along the body, you'd find her arm is going to be far too long. The answer he'll want for the arm in this drawing is somewhere between the original and the redline.

learn how mouths works, you fucking retard. Not this slightly altered Steven Universe shit. Jesus fucking christ. Are you an immigrant from /co/? what about tumblr?

Your eyes are too distant from each other in some of your drawings. Are your characters as retarded as you?

Unironically loomis. Some heads are just painful to look at.

An eyebrow should be longer than an eye unless you're really trying for that fucked up eyebrow look. Stop that shitty eyebrow line, and learn about how eyebrows arch. Speaking of eye area, can you fucking make up your mind if you're gonna put eyebags or not? One character has eyebags on right, but no eyebags on the left. What are you drawing? testicles?

Tbh the composition is really busy and the lack of mid tones and defined separation makes it visually confusing. Also the lettering isnt great and isnt super consistent? I'd suggest taking it out and using digital to add in text so you get the perfection of a legit font.

Also adding some background tone, like a nice solid gray will separate the foreground from the bg and make it more interesting. Also varying line weight to add emphasis on the protagonist will make it stand out.

The angle of the left ankle implies a greater degree of bend in the knee than is shown; for the pose displayed to be possible, her left femur would have to be shorter than her right, otherwise that degree of ankle flexion would not be necessary for the toe to contact the ground. To correct, you would need to either bring the left heel closer to the ground or bring the whole leg out at the hip.

The mouth also seems to be floating. The angle of the eye line implies a perspective that the other features don't appear to agree with (a slight up-tilt.) Maybe I'm wrong about this though.

Also, is the "stock" of the gun supposed to function as the seat in this case? If so, it seems really narrow, too much so even for an itty bitty loli toches. Something to keep in mind if you draw more of these, I guess. It seems like it would also be really difficult to stay upright without any kind of stirrups, but maybe that's part of the charm.

Overall it looks really good though. I especially like how you captured the crinkliness of the straw material rather than just making it look like horsehair.

Really appreciate the detailed critique and the compliment. You're absolutely right about the left leg; I noticed that problem while inking and tried to correct for it. I couldn't bring out and rotate her leg without making the form of her boot difficult to read, so I decided to just go with and hope the issue wasn't too notable. You're probably right about the face too, I didn't construct that part rigorously at all; just went with what seemed cute and expressive.

I was thinking the wooden part of the barrel would be where she sits, if that's what you mean? I think it's a good point to add some more functionality features like a seat and some stirrups, too. It dawned on me to give her some aviation googles, but I was already coloring and figured I'd save them for next time.

Very Nice, Although I would recommend tilting the hand to align with the book (you can hold a book yourself to get an idea of the angle of your hand/ how it may curl if you keep your wrist straight).

Also the left foot looks like it's too straight. I tried sitting in that position and even though my ankle is not particularly flexible it is quite hard to keep your foot flat at that knee angle. I found that I either pulled my knee close to my chest or I straightened out my leg entirely and made my foot point perpendicular to the floor, or it made a perpendicular angle with my shin and I tilted towards my left (the camera in this picture).

Also to make the hoodie look more cozy, give the hoodie-to-wrist fillet/curve a sharper angle, sort of as if more of the hoodie sleeve was gathered at the wrist and it was starting to fold.

One last thing, I would remove that little line that represents the crotch or the fold on the pants, the fold would probably have a wrinkle facing the other direction. It makes my brain think the crotch is there are something.

Other than that this is a really good piece.

1. Bear/wolf/beast face full of perspective disagreement, my guy. Eyes, nose, and jaw are all saying different things. Elongated muzzles are super tricky, I will warn you. Insanity may ensue if you try to fix this.
2. On that subject, and please don't take this personally, but I'm actually not sure what animal it's supposed to be. Bears have short muzzles and rounded ears, but wolves don't have that kind of body/limb proportions. Some kind of werebear?
3. I'm sure you're aware of this, but in the interest of thoroughness I must point out that those paws look pretty phoned in. I would suggest studying references.
4. The bear's pose is more "office surprise party photo" than "monster movie poster" if you catch my meaning. A forward-leaning posture would feel more aggressive, like he's in the process of lunging forward. As it stands he looks a bit more like he's doing jumping jacks.
5. The lady has some issues as well, but in particular the groin area rings false. It kind of looks like she's wearing a codpiece. Jaw needs work too.
6. Tank top has a bad case of suction cup syndrome - remember that tight fabric compresses and moves the breasts, it doesn't just form a thin film around them.
7. This is just an aesthetic thing, but the way she's holding that revolver kinda makes me cringe. No-one who knows what they're doing would have a loaded gun pointed somewhere random they aren't looking, let alone one that appears to be cocked. If this character isn't trained in gun safety it's a reasonable mistake, though.

Overall, just keep at it with those fundies and make sure to use good references if you get stuck. Good on you for attempting a complete scene, as well, that's something I really don't do enough of personally.

You are far from finished if you believe those clavicles and the base of the neck aren't completely independent from the torso boy. In your case it would be better if you completely removed any sign of there being a clavicle because of the unique fuck up you set yourself up, remember that the clavicles surround the neck. The more you look at it the more obvious the issue with perspective becomes so either correct the perspective or have the head proportioned to the torso. Perspective is essentially the foreshortening of forms that are inline with your vanishing point - it's what you can't see which in this case we wouldn't see the clavicles because of the stylized head that would overlap the base of the neck. Its more about the compostion, i wasnt able to identify what was happening from the thumbnail. This is partly to blame on the sillhouette of mob merging with that of the building (also their values are too close to each other). Also the flow of the image is too monotone. All Objects are stretched in the same direction, i supposed this is to create the illusion of flow, but their shapes are to similar because they all align on the same axis.

Maybe study some stills from Mob Psycho or other dynamic anime.

some other small things which you could fix on this now:
>her tongue and lips make a bad tanged at the second panel
>the 2 symmetrical sweat drops on him at the last panel look bad, more one on his neck or something
and something to practice for next work I would say are drawing teeth thru the skin like an xray to force you think about the structure under the skin, your teeth on that guy show a really shallow understanding on mouth structure

1. Top of the ear should be roughly in-line with the brow line, not the eye line.
2. The right eye's people must need it, because it's flying off into space.
3. Ball of the nose should be approximately equidistant vertically from the eyeline and the mouth in a straight-on perspective. An uptilt will bring it closer to the eyes, a down tilt will bring it closer to the mouth. Try to think carefully about the geometry of the face and you'll see what I mean.
4. The mouth...look in the mirror and try to replicate that expression. It looks a lot different, doesn't it? It's like the top and bottom lips don't meet at the corners of the mouth. I'm finding it hard to verbalize so have a look at the sketch and see if you can spot what I mean.
5. No reason for a cleavage line when the breasts are visibly separated like that. Instead, try a shaded area to accentuate the inside plane of both breasts.

I would focus on studying proper construction and doing some life-drawings. Some parts of your piece appear well-formed, while others seem like you're copying symbols instead of thinking in 3D. Always try to think carefully about the forms of your subject, and resist the urge to simply go with what looks familiar.

Overall, though, that's a cute grill anon. Do your best!
