Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

So I'm like two hours into this zebra on my sixth day of learning to draw and I'm not really sure if I'm practicing right.
The first thing the sticky recommends that you do is learn to copy, so I was trying to approximate the proportions of the zebra in my head, mark them onto the page, and basically play connect-the-dots. (I eventually got kinda lazy and started eyeballing the stripes.) I'm not even trying to construct it or anything.
So, is this even worthwhile practice or should I jump directly to loomis and drawabox, or something else? Is it even worth finishing the zebra?

The main reason for a zebra was because I joined /las/ and dad.gallery had a "draw your animal" challenge and I got a zebra, though I managed to screw up and fail to actually enter it anyway.
You do think I should just focus on construction rather than trying to copy, though? Supposedly I'm trying to learn to see things objectively or whatever, but I feel more like I'm just mindlessly copying. Loomis and drawabox feel a lot more productive to me.

Learn construction vs just being a human copy machine. That's why people are always recommending Loomis and others to learn from. If you learn construction of the form, when you draw from life you be understanding how all the different parts of the body relate to each other and interact in space instead of just copying what is in front of you exactly.

Gestures are more to capture the flow/motion and general measurements of the figure. They can be used just for practice, but more importantly so you can get something down quickly on the paper that is accurate and natural, and that you can build upon to get a good finished drawing. Exactly how much info you include varies by the artist, but it’s fairly common to have a bit of simple torso structure, then quick, simple lines to capture the gesture of the limbs.

Draw bigger, your lines are too big to capture that kind of texture. Transition from rough blocking, to capturing and adding emphasis to the important contours, and vary your line weight more, especially on the textures. Go from largest shapes to smallest.

You have the basic shape, now refine it, and pay attention to the contours that indicate the shapes.

>> No.3854106

>>3853938
This.

Look for the S curves, contour, and movement. Make the figure flow. It's not about accuracy, it's about capturing the pose.

>> No.3854110

>>3853941
Gesture is capturing the pose and movement of the body through space. It's a exercise to learn to see the body, how it moves, and how the figure balances - looking for the center of mass, how to ground the figure with the feet, then flowing through the center of mass. It's about capturing the impression of the pose.

You do this in the beginning, and add to it as you master it, until you're doing finished work that starts with the gesture, and is refined from there.

>> No.3854111

Sometimes I'll feel a drive to improve after seeing how far I've come, and sometimes I'll feel like why even bother if it took so long to make so little progress. Again, it's my problem that I shouldn't blame on the concept of sketchbooks. I just avoid it to sidestep the whole thing altogether.

Whenever I try coloring, I end up getting stuck with a pic that looks kinda like pic related. Values are kinda in place, but I just can't get over it.

Sure, I know some parts aren't even done (like arms) so please ignore that, because even if I do finish those, it kinda ends up stuck like the torso is currently. I have painted the abdomen area like 3 times already, and I always end up stuck the way it looks now, or something similar. I just end up redrawing the same shit.

Anyway what am I missing? What should I practice? Should I just accept that once I hit a plateau when coloring, I call it a day and move on to the next paining?

your drawing has little construction or gesture. your lines are short, use longer pencil strokes generally, it'll produce more flow/gesture, be mindful of directions in your reference (the general tilt of the face, how the left eyebrow flows into the nose etc). put down some basic construction first and make sure it's accurate (angle of the face, width x height, line for the eyes, brows, bottom of nose, lips). look up some basic stuff on shading if you really wanna get into that yet.

understand the shapes you're looking at and their volume and how they produce the lines you see

generally try to observe as closely as you can and take you're time, always before you draw a line look try to understand its size in proportion to the rest, curvature, angle, and let your lines be informed by shapes rather than just slavishly following the darkest lines on your reference

figure drawing for all it's worth is the one if you want to get into that, though i'd recommend steve huston's Figure Drawing for Artists over that. it's a broader approach that introduces the general concepts of construction / gesture slowly and has plenty of exercises throughout to help you digest what's being taught.

i'd recommend you do loomis afterwards, it's similar plus it has good basic information on fixed proportions and basic anatomy that'll help you draw stuff from imagination. it's also a bit more stern and geared towards ongoing illustrators, written from a 50ies perspective. huston is easier to digest

Your biggest weakness right now is measuring, you have her proportions all off, and you've elongated and distorted her face.

Forget shading for now. Work on capturing the contours of her face, and the correct proportions. Start with big, basic shapes - she has a teardrop shaped face, but you've drawn an oval. And, you haven't measured the proportions of her face, and elongated the bridge of the nose.

Then, work on refining what's actually there. You haven't indicated the fold of the eyelid over her eye, for example. And, you've not captured the actual shapes of her mouth, you've drawn a symbolic mouth.

Take what you've done, and do a transparent overlay over the reference. This will show you exactly where you need to pay more attention.

Pretty bog standard as a beginner attempt. And, pretty standard advice - measure and look at what's really there, not what you think is there. You're on the right path.

It's not that I wanted to do that. I meant to say I took stuff like that for granted when drawing with a pencil, but now that I'm trying to transition to pen drawing I'm struggling, and wanted some advice on how to do it. Mainly to avoid developing bad habits.

Like, how do I even crosshatch? Must lines follow the surface or should I ignore that? Should my drawings be bigger to have more space to work with when shading? Or how do I avoid making a mess trying to add details? There's a point where my details turn into black blobs.

>>3855963
I guess I'll do that, I'm not yet comfortable with my lines. Even when drawing a rectangle lines are wobbly and that didn't happen when drawing with a pencil.

This may be a stupid question, but i want to get it out anyway.

What are the cosmetic differences to the end product from using different types of paint? Obviously Watercolor looks much thinner, and watery almost like its staining the surface, rather than covering it. Personally i thought it seemed more like a stain, than a paint, but that's just me. But, anyway. Are there any differences like that between other paint types?

Ditch the airbrush / soft brush and do your base rendering with a hard / firm round brush. Push your values - what would be darkest shadow in the reference picture is in your painting as light as midtones / light tones of the reference pic.

And really, use hard brush with pen pressure controlled opacity. A basic exercise to do is learn to do smooth gradients with a hard / firm brush.

The basic composition is decent, but what that picture is trying to achieve? Is it a monochromatic value study or a stretched out thumbnail? It needs a little bit more visual interest in any case. Make that light stream from the sun between the mountains to add color temperature and push value. The bridge (I suppose) is a little too dark in value. If it's backlit by the sun you could warm it to umbers. The whole picture lacks color contrast and you should compliment the purples with some ochre yellow or yellowish olive greens.

This is how I understand it: When you make a sketch you try to block in the shapes, look at edges and get down the body of the subject, groundwork to fill in the details later.

However when you draw gesture you draw way fewer lines that follow the line of action or balance, with little attention paid to anything else, to purely show what the subject is doing and where its movement is directed.

It helps with learning to make subjects more lifelike and expressive because it captures the essence of the pose.

The two can be combined, as you can find the rhythm of the pose with a gesture and then build shapes on top of it.

1. Long or short strokes?
2. I use a hard round but lose faith easily, do I use 90% opacti you with 100% flow or the other way round?
3. I seem to never pick the right Shadow or highlight tone
4. How do I get better at seeing shapes of tone/mass/shadow?
5. How the fuck do i put it all down on canvas? What strokes? Do i paint the shape i see and cut the edges or blend the edges as they are?

I'd assume, that you are pretty new to digital art. No insult btw.
Maybe use another program/brush because I really do not like those brushes that are either black or white, if you know what I mean. A good program, you might consider is krita(free).

If you are drawing with a mouse I would recommend, that you pick up a drawing tablet.

Imo the upper body is not that bad, but I think that the head is not quite fitting onto the torso, because of its perspective. The camera is below the body but it seems like it is on the same height as the head, only considering the head. A bit more construction on the head might be a good foundation for this piece. Have a look at pic related. On the top left hand corner there is a head from below, that is pretty a bit more constructed.

You could construct the legs more, because I think it is really hard to pull of a leg, without proper construction. Having a look at references might be a good idea, especially on the right leg.

I definitely see what you mean about the perspective, I think part of my brain was trying to put her further into profile than the video I was watching and it came out stuck halfway between. >2. I use a hard round but lose faith easily, do I use 90% opacti you with 100% flow or the other way round?

Personal choice.

>3. I seem to never pick the right Shadow or highlight tone

That's because you're a beginner, and you haven't trained your eye to see them, yet, and to translate them from your brain to your hand.
That comes from practice, and making mistakes.

Do i paint the shape i see and cut the edges or blend the edges as they are?

These are things you learn as you develop skills and learn how to draw and paint, and you find what works best for you.

As with anything in life, start simple. Build from there. You master each new level, and move onto the next. Be patient. Art takes time, a lot of time. Stop worrying about what comes later, and get comfortable with the basic tools and techniques.

Remember fellas, when you're sketching your shit there's nothing wrong with redrawing even a simple line over and over again until your fingers fall off. Don't pretend like you know what you're doing, especially when no one's watching.

Currently reading through FWAP and Michael Hampton design and invention.
My college has an art club and everyone has to publish a comic.

I made this cowboy but I have a looooooong ways to go before I make this shit actually look good.

Any advice for shading people?

Someday I'll learn how to properly shade, go digital, or stop drawing anime faces.
But I decided to break this guy's spine today instead.
Guess I'll finally get down to actually reading some books on that stuff instead of lazily putting it off.

CC Animate is what Adobe calls flash now. Heard good things about TVPaint and ToonBoom as well. ClipStudio has tools for animation, but some of them are still buggy and clunky.

Thanks for the advice!! I was worried that smoothing it out too much would sacrifice some depth, but I think I got carried away with the harder edges. Thanks again!

Help me boys, I don't know what the fuck I'm doing.

I'm still trying to get my head around perspective, horizon lines and vanishing points.

I'm making progress but I know I've still made mistakes. Would I have been better off using 2 vanishing points for this?

My anatomy is also still garbage.

A redline would be great if anyone has the time.

I think it would be beneficial to use reference and construct the body using boxes. I am recommending this, because boxes are easier to draw, in perspective, than a somewhat simplified ribcage.

On my phone right now, therefore not being able to do a gesture line.

Two point perspective is a bit Overkill imo, because the perspective is not as obvious, when drawing humans, compared to a intersection in a city for example, but perspective is almost useless, if you draw something, which doesn't look like it looks in real live or how you want it to look. (leaving style aside)

I think you should invest more time in letting the form of the body look more, like it looks in real life. This can be achieved using construction with simple objects like cubes. This can really improve your sketches.

The legs and hips are FAR too big. You need to scale them down. Also, the right leg should be less visible in this perspective.

question.
i'm reading drawing on the right side and currently doing the modified contour drawing exercise second time.
in the book they say you should look at your hand 90% of the time and draw with the other AT THE SAME TIME. is that correct?

because this feel very counter-intuitive and my initial sketch gets fucked by the contour i try to draw without looking at paper at all.
to me it makes more sense to spend like 50% checking every couple of seconds between the hand and paper to make sure i don't fuck up.

Anyone have any tutorials, documents or any other info on how to train drawing with the eye instead of the brain?

Asking here because you guys are honestly most of the better help I've found so far.

How do people achieve these perfect lines when doing digital? Is it nothing but practice?
