he uses/used rapidographs for sketching. Those must've been the old ones, with actual sturdy nibs to produce the kind of clean lines and crosshatching he does. His finished works are often done with mapping dip pens.

I wish he had staked out more of the themes and motifs of European art and honed them toward his own style. He might have taken marketplaces, beaches, scenes of people exiting the mass, festivals, village vignettes... and done them in a more exaggerated style, granting him more of a claim to being "the Bruegel of the last half of the 20th Century". I haven't seen many of the French pictures but it looks like there aren't many examples of people in these open areas. You would think specifically French fashion would be more of a stimulus to him, but everyone still seems to dress like an American tourist?

He was too old and already had too much of a personal style when he moved to France. Similar as to how Miyazaki said he wanted to draw like Moebius, but he already had a "trademark" style to him and didn't feel like he could change it.

Recently he said he started to lost "that" thing that made him want to draw. I think it was when he was making one of his restauran placemat drawings, for him, those were a fun little exercise and most of the times ended up giving them away to the restaurant owners/the people he drew. BUt he noticed that people started getting money signs on their eyes when they realized who he was. Then he felt like he was starting to be treated like a money priting machine by regular people and kinda lost the feeling to want to draw.
