Add some warm hues. Overall the piece is flat and not very visually appealing because of how much black you used. Your values need work, too, for this to shine you need to indicate depth, especially on the alien's hands. They looks like flat sails, not cupped hands.
The focus is the center of the painting, because of how it's laid out - and the center is basically a black void.
Your lighting doesn't make much sense, either, I can't really tell where the light is coming from.
The left figure is lit from the left, the right figure is lit from the upper right.
It's not bad, but your color composition, values, and lighting need the most work.

>> No.3848791

Question: This piece has very dramatic, interesting lighting, but her face is completely flat. Why?

(Hint, in a room like that, you'd have light bouncing all over the place, you could do some interesting things with light on her face.)(Also, the tip of her nose, lips, cheekbones and brow would get some highlights from the lighting abouver her, at that angle, going by the light on her shoulder)
Great piece, keep working on it.

You're still focusing on details too much.

Take your tube of black and throw it away, please. Learn to mix dark hues and values with COLOR, not black. Black is very rare in nature, and a sunset like that would have rich, vibrant, color filled shadows.
Using black is the first crutch most artists have to stop relying on.

Learn to see warm and cool colors, especially i skin. Stop using black for shadows, it's visually dull and flattens everything out. The face is full of colors, learn to see them.

yeah it takes a ridiculously long time to do this, especially with all the characters that have to look consistent. my intent with this comic/graphic novel thing is to have something to work on in between contracts when I get out of school, and maybe get it printed or something. i've been trying out shortcuts like modeling character's faces in 3d but I won't know if it's worthwhile until later on when I draw more of this. the reason i'm rendering it out so much to begin with is becaues I figure that in order to get people to read something that isn't particularly humerous, it has to be at least eye-catching enough to get someone to read a couple pages and hopefully become invested enough to follow the comic.
but yeah it takes at least twelve hours to render a page. more if I can't get consistency in character's heads.

>>3849309 did a paintover again, i think the fire needs work to make it look like convincing fire or as if the building is actually burning down. If you think about a building burning the insides are collapsing which causing chaotic shapes of both the fire thats spreading or the parts of the building that are being destroyed. My 2nd problem is that the image lacks a main focal point or narrative element, what is the focus here? the fire itself or the smoke coming from it? If you're trying to make narrative concepts like this you need to add stuff like (what caused the fire? what is being done about it). Thinking through ur image beforehand will make it more interesting and ultimately better. From a compositional perspective i felt it was too cramped in general so i made it wider and darkened a few areas to make the fire the focal point and added in a character and i think it looks really cool, like it could be a frame from a film or video game cinematic. Great drawing, especially if you did it from life. My one problem is that you've fallen into a trap that i myself fall into a lot and that's over rendering everything, especially in the back ground, right now the drawing looks like a good copy of what you might've had in front of you but it lacks artistic touch or decision making. If you look at a lot of master life drawings you notice it's not that they rendered every single thing they could but more what they left out, those decisions are what elevates you from a photocopying machine to an artist so to speak. My paintover is basically to illustrate this point, i made some points darker on the ribs and dulled the background down a lot. I think it makes it look nicer. Hope it helps

Nice, this looks great when you click on it. However, from far away it doesn't read very well.
I think this happens a lot with textured creatures like this, it can be easy to zoom in to render details and then lose track of the overall values.

Not the artist here

Trying to shade a cartoony face in a completely realistic way is the perfect to way to get your art into the uncanny valley category, in that case it would be preferable to use other ways to compensate that(color, composition, shapes, etc) i think he compensated the flatness of the cartoon face pretty well with other fundamentals and it reads.

I haven't start working on the mountain and the water really, just worked the sky and the character itself.
Here's a feathered Spinosaurus, something looks odd (Aside from the fact that looks like a deviantart painting) but I can't tell why

i think is the ligthing, how is the sun supposed to hit the sail from behind the mountain, as the clouds suggest it is. also, it looks like the sun is hitting it from the front, if it were from back i think it would mostly glow red like ears do.
also, try not to think of the sky as uniformly light. here the sun is obscured but that portion of the sky is still much brighter.
another thing, how likely is it that a spinosaurus would have feathers? is there any evidence for this?

Spinosaurids are distant relatives of megalosaurus, which had feathers, so they MAY had feathers. Any way this is speculative for a school project.

There is no contrast to emphasize the face. and the clouds in the back imply the light comes from the back but the fin (which I thought was part of the mountains behind him because of the similarities)

Also the light on the fin hugs the edge of the shape (making it look more like a ball) instead of being relatively straight, true to the form of the fin.

CSP has a dedicated tips site with tutorials to search through
https://tips.clip-studio.com/en-us
there is also an Ask site where you can upload images and ask for help from random people.
try looking there or asking there and using the pics for reference.
https://ask.clip-studio.com/en-us/

I also found the Artist's twitter he goes by Ran'ou (tamago no kimi)
https://twitter.com/rannou75
He uses PS and SAI and does not appear to have any tutorials, but you can try asking him for one, you would be the only english speaker asking though.

Your best bet is asking on the CSP ASK site or messing with hidden subtool features until they act like you want them to.
or check the pixiv.net tutorial section (good luck with google Chromes translate feature)

The first thing I'd recommend is to prepare yourself for a redo.

First, construct the deer in the reference with basic shapes and values (light and shadow family, hard edges, no fancy stuff yet). Just simple gestural lines and shapes; cubes, cylinders, and spheres, like the reference above.

Post the result here.

If you need more examples of gestural and construction, hit up a Google search "drawing wildlife from reference".

Construct the reference's subject with basic shapes and values to demonstrate the planes (light and shadow family, hard edges, no fancy stuff yet).

Notice how the outside of it's right antler is dark, save for the light bouncing off the horns and round edges, and how it creates a contrast with the light bouncing off the inside of its left?

With the main areas of light and shadow blocked in, work out the smaller shapes and features.

Here is an example for the process of a portrait drawing. https://youtu.be/jczrAB1_M6s

You're getting caught up in detail way to early, when your value structure is completely off (which I think is the main goal of your exercise). Everything is a mid tone right now. Squint and compare value relationships. Like the over all shape of the deer is lighter than the trees in the background. Snow is the lightest value, tree line is overall darkest. You have the deer darker than the background, and the snow almost the same value as the trees, and the deer is almost the same overall value as the tree line losing a very nice silhouette created from the value contrast of the tree and deer in the ref. Just keep comparing every shape that sit next to the other, and think more abstractly. Instead of seeing it as a deer, see it as a bunch of flat value shapes that are pieces to a puzzle. Also don't be afraid to through this in grayscale in photoshop to see what's really going on.

Maybe try using less high-contrast values, and incorporate a more muted color scheme with simplified shapes?

Also - unless you're going to be developing other focal points, I think you could ditch a large amount of empty space. It seems like you're trying to focus on the figure, so maybe consider cropping the canvas to create a composition that is more focused on the figure.

bridge of the nose is very thick, lips have faint outlines that flatten them out, same issue with the shadow on the chin,
colors in general are very desaturated which makes it look muddy, edge control needs some work all very sharp,
need to push the values in the midtone to give places like under the head and the forearm some depth, lines in the hands could be blended some more as well as most of the brush strokes, blacks in the robe are nice and subtle but could maybe use more range, nose is off-center, jaw is flat on one side

I know this is a dumb question, but how do I know what color I should be replacing black with? I'm working on a digital piece copying an official digital painting from Riot Games, and I'm not really sure if I'm fucking this up or not. It doesn't look great (and obviously it's not anywhere near done) but I am kind of new to art so I'm really not sure what I need to be focussing on. All feedback would be appreciated.

i think what you mean is fresnel reflection, here the angle is pretty deep and it looks like its supposed to be a tele-perspective so that effect wouldnt be very strong. something that also counters this effect is that the sunlight through the reflection has a more direct angle to the viewers eye.

For what it's worth, I like it! The whole vibe is pretty badass and the form on both the cloak and the pillars are very nice. Also, the fire is really well done, and I like the little bit of ceiling I can see! The brick on the back wall is an interesting touch, why did you choose to add that? Also, nice detail work on the floor, I really like how you did it. One change I would recommend is not making the dark shadow so hard. It looks like a reflection when it shouldn't. Make it more blurry and blended.

Testing out some Zbrush to Photoshop workflows to try and determine which parts are faster to sculpt and which parts are faster to paint/photobash. If you're wondering why I'm not just painting everything it's because I'd really love to get to work on some video game concept art some day. Most of the time I do paint everything but I think this style might be more efficient and appropriate for realistic games/loading screens etc. and I'll also have something to send to the 3D artists at the end of the day.

C & C welcome. I know this is kinda in /3/ territory but I spent 75% of my time in Photoshop and you can still rate it as a character design and a work of digital art.

Its actually an illustration for a writer, so he's the one who wanted the brick wall in the background. He said its to make the character seem more like he doesn't like light, so he bricked up the only windows and the room is to be really dark.

Thanks, dude! This one in particular took me a little over 6 hours to sculpt. As you can see, the base sculpt is pretty fucking simple... Now that I look at it, I think I should have spent another 5h. within ZBrush just cleaning everything up and splitting the mechanical parts from each other. I would have been done with the whole image much faster and had a much better time compositing. You live, you learn.

Did a bad paintover, but i think it shows a few things you could improve: Your composition is very flat, mainly because of the big flat sky and ground areas. I've also tried adding a foreground and changed the backgound to avoid some unforunate tangents. Values are still very wonky, but I tried to give the rocks a bit more form and made shadows darker in the foreground.
I really like your rendering of the lizard and the rocks, and the subject and the whole scene is pretty danm cool, so please keep working on it!

Not a lot of time to draw, so I've mostly done freehand fun things like pic related, but nothing good or showable.

You should refine the forearms, they look a bit too big.
Foreshortening on the left arm is either confusing or wrong. Other anatomical spots that you could improve are the ribs and the pelvis.

Otherwise you could imply a cave with a few brushstrokes in the background instead of what seems to be pure black.

Anyway, cool comp, design, colors, rendering.

You know they made a scary experiment where they had people look at each other, or into a mirror, for a long amount of time and by the end of it they reported to have seen distorted faces or monsters

>At the end of a 10 min session of mirror gazing, the participant was asked to write what he or she saw in the mirror. The descriptions differed greatly across individuals and included: (a) huge deformations of one’s own face (reported by 66% of the fifty participants); (b) a parent’s face with traits changed (18%), of whom 8% were still alive and 10% were deceased; (c) an unknown person (28%); (d) an archetypal face, such as that of an old woman, a child, or a portrait of an ancestor (28%); (e) an animal face such as that of a cat, pig, or lion (18%); (f ) fantastical and monstrous beings (48%).

Just wanted some general thoughts on this.
I'm practicing drawing without references so I draw whatever random pose comes to mind.

general thoughts? have you ever looked at something like this >>3857235 ?
every single body part on your drawing is the wrong size, I didn't even know it was possible to fuck up this badly

here's something a bit more complete (ignore the hands pls :DDDDD)

2bh i want to master construction & perspective first, and then move on to studying light and color, so most of my work is going to be linework for the time being

My attempt was to try and get you to see that the eyes are super uneven with the tilt of the head. It would probably be for the best if you just start off with the sticky

Is her lower body too big and/or angled incorrectly? The hand was sloppily done too I know.

Hope someone can give me criticism on this
.
Also, how do I start drawing anime/cartoony cute stuff?
It seems it's the best way to gain money online; but I can't do it very well yet. My linework is too messy and I don't really know how to color.

Damn man! Still loving it. The fish design is fucking awesome. It's really something that sets it apart from other fantasy art and I really like the characters final pose. Where she's looking kinda completes the a kinda weird S-thing the whole image is making.

The overall feeling I get from this (as a humble guy who's followed your process from the start) is:

"I'mma just put some particles with some radial blur so I can be done with this fucking thing!"

You put your final image together hastily after a ton of iterations because you literally "Can't see it anymore". Because of this your finishing touches look a bit lazy and devalue your whole piece.

My recommendation would be to remove all the particle effects and put this aside for about 3 days. Then you come back to this for another day, do all the finishing touches and call it done.

Nice job anyway dawg.

I still have to obejct to that ugly swooping line coming from the top fin, my eyes instantly go there.

Its nice anon. I like the colors, you're being more experimental and give it some character.
12 hours for that is a BIT much, try to work on your timing.
Other than that its nice, I like it. I like the blue coloring you used as the shadow for the characters head, I would use a little bit of that on the tail too. If you were implying the blue light is coming from the front of the character, I don't think you would see it on the bottom and sides of the fox's face. But if you're using as kind of an accent color then continue it throughout a bit in the tail.

i really dig the fish, nice verdigris. its looks like its patched up on the front of the dorsal fin, it clashes a bit with the rest, maybe im reading it wrong but the rest feels so sculptural.
also, are you dead set on having that sonic boom? i feel its kind of meh..
but great job, looking forward seeing the finished piece

I mean it's south America from space I don't think it's red or orange though I definitely should have considered hue changes due to lighting. Ether way I won't polish a turd past 6 hours, what's done is done. I'm trying to do a bunch of stuff in space because it's always very haunting.
