I was wondering if there are any books, documentaries or sources on the evolution of Japanese art outside of Osamu Tezuka's influence on anime? I kind of want to know how Japanese artists came up with their own art techniques independently or how they incorporated western techniques and themes into their art styles.

Aesthetic Japanese philosophy played a part in sculpting everything about their culture (I don't think they differentiated the concept of art from lifestyle) as they managed to keep secluded before war opened borders . then >>3838008

They copied China until the turn of the century where they copied yuro art. Shin Hanga is my favorite movement.

You don't have to study Japanese art before Tezuka. It's just a mix of Ukiyo-e and Mucha. No Japanese artist today study Ukiyo-e anyway. While they love Mucha to this day.

Mucha's art looks like a lot of anime art. Or was an influence for a lot of it.

This was the first western book on Japanese comics and animation. Written in 1988. Starts off with early Japanese art.

Pre-anime Japanese art is inherently superior to what it is today. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a weeb with no taste.
