Turned 26 just yesterday and surprised most of the people at my college. They didn't even know I was of drinking age. I'm jealous of the abilities of some of the kids here but equally frustrated. Only a handful of them have a grasp of the fundamentals while the others forgo them just to imitate art they see on tumblr or their favorite anime. They really shine during assignments and I marvel at them. A bunch of them started asking me for advice and material since every project I make wows them.

Makes me feel bad when they say I'm too talented to be wasting my time in school and not working in the industry.

Ive been a tattooist the last ten years, I don’t really bring that aspect of what I do to /ic/ though because its a whole different approach with different values. Fundamentals of perspective, anatomy, design and blah blah blah... All that basic shit. I personally also recommend picking up a tiny bit of 3D sculpting and rendering just so you get to see how stuff like AO, SSS and a "camera" work in a more controlled environment.

At the very beginning I think you should just be focusing on drawing. Just draw what you like from reference and try to have fun with it! Keep it simple and don't worry about equipment. It's easy to get lost in all that technical crap and feel like you're not getting anywhere. Gotta try to have fun every once in a while but set some clear goals with clear notes on how to get to them.

bumskee started at 25, i think trevor claxton started kinda late too. people put too much weight on age when it's probably one of the least relevant factors to your actual ability. the number of years you've been training is far more important and only as a means of evaluating your progress & what you can do better. take ego out of things as much as possible, it's easy to fall in to the trap of thinking 'so and so is only x years old and doing *this*' and just masturbate to your own inadequacy instead of trying do figure out what it is that they did that was so effective. oh and besides, compared to whit brachna, we're all fucking losers.

reminder just to hurt you: a year passes a lot quicker than you think, the last year you wasted can just repeat twice and you'll stop being the special talented 18 year old. You'll be a 20 year old guy who draws bad who's been doing it for a while. Don't relax too much.

>> No.3828428

>>3827058
Honestly starting young is incredibly overrated. For many artists who drew since they were a kid, all they did was just learn bad habits since they weren't learning things like construction and perspective when they were 10-15 years old. Sure, they might be able to pump out works in their 'style' that look okay at first, but they almost always come with heavy technical flaws. And even then, many artists who've been drawing 'forever' are usually too headstrong/think too highly of themselves to go back and learn the fundies that they never learned and are now lacking. You're better off starting older with a rigorous course of study.
