If you're applying to be a character artist, ideas, and showing you can draw and paint in a variety of styles.

Portfolios should always be showing your potential, and cover as much ground as possible, to show that you're not only good at one specific thing. The art world is too small to be specialized anymore, unless you're trying to work in a niche like comics/manga.

>is it old or new? rich or poor?

>politics? main occupation of villagers? farming? trading? raising animals? entertainment?
you can go for fucking hours and hours, and each aspect can be a grounds for another series

Bitch, everything been done to death. If you're strung out on it move on to another subject matter or topic instead of bitching. The reason concepts aren't usually that inspired is because of trend. Without context everything when sided up next to each other will ultimately all feel samey. If you knew the context behind the design or some of the world building for that generic neon airship saloon, you'd have more invested interest. With concept art, story and art live together and it is hard to care why this particular half naked sweaty anime girl is crawling out of this particular battle damaged mech, or what makes this shiny armor clad hero so damned special.
