**If you make good copies of anime *properly*, you will be able to draw good anime. If you make bad copies of anime or bad anime styled drawings from photos, you will get better at drawing bad anime. Please think carefully about how you are studying.**

This is the thread for:

1. Posting your anime studies:
>Copy exactly but don’t do it aimlessly. Integrate drawing concepts (construction, color theory, tracing, etc.) into your studies in order to pull information from the reference (anime art, figurines, tutorials) that you can later use for your original work.
>Do a single study multiple times to ensure you address all of your mistakes and memorize the correct process in your head. Attempt drawing it from memory as well.
>You will only be able to effectively deviate from your reference after doing exact copy studies accurately and consistently.
2. General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

If any of you guys wants to get more familiar with the 3d shapes and constructions that make up an anime head/body I recommend using sketchfab:
https://sketchfab.com/trololord/collections/anime
It helped me some too when I was wrapping my head around anime heads and it's especially nice that you can turn on matcap and see it rendered like metal to really grasp how everything connects.

Feels like the main thing I learned was to not always make the pupil black :S (is there a rule here?). I also thought that the buckle on the bag was way thicker than what I would have made. Kinda weird thing to notice but that's what really stood out to me at the time. He uses these types of gradients toward the edges of the drawing (hair, leg) which seems important as well.

Varied lineweight stops images looking flat. I know its not a 1:1 copy but look at things like her leg shapes on the figurine compared to the leg shapes on your drawing. You made her left leg oddly round on top and skinny towards the knee and your pelvis is unaligned. It maybe because you have that leg on tiptoes (even though its not like that in the ref) so you had to "improvise", thus creating problems with your left leg and pelvis.

Also, your rough sketch has a much more appealing face but you decided to get rid of that for some reason. It's like you dont know if you want to go for your own style or follow rei's body model. You went from "perfectly aligned eyes" to "now her left eye is higher up and smaller compared to her right eye". Also, if you want to go for anime look, you'd have to make the legs (groin to heel) about half her total height.

>It's like you dont know if you want to go for your own style or follow rei's body model.

It's a little bit in-between.

I wanted to use Rei's pose as the model, and stick as close as is reasonable to cel-shading colour style - so I limited the number of markers I used for each part to no more than three - but I'm actually shooting for something that may disqualify this as a *genuine* anime study.

I made the legs a little thicker/rounder on purpose, but I can see that her left leg could probably use a little more "meat" in keeping with the way I've changed her right leg.

You're also right about the eyes. Now that this drawing is past the "traditional" point (all the ink and marker work is done), I can make some small adjustments digitally to come up with a more polished final product.

Circle, crosshair, chin, nose, neck, vertibrae, shoulder into collar bone, circle the chest attached to the vertabrae, attatch hip box to vertabrae, create the starting point for legs and draw them down, go back up to arms and draw them down, boxes for hands, triangles for feet, make midsection with one or two ovals depending on pose stretch.

I’ve come to a conclusion that the number of beautiful and unique styles is between 3 to 5 in my mind. The rest is rehashed garbage. One artist in particular I can’t seem to find again drew a 3 page b/w chrollo hisoka HxH comic where hisoka steps on chrollo - BUT it was the most incredibly beautiful and handsome face I had ever seen. Obviously couldn’t fucking find it again. I tried all day searching for a male face I actually like to try to study or learn from it but they all look the fucking same, too feminine or angular or mashed up/clean Korean look (where face looks too pulled forward and straight) or of course the western too squarish style.
Next there’s the female look I’m going for and I can only think of 3 pictures I want to copy and of course I can’t find the artist for those either. And usually these incredibly beautiful and unique faces are attached to a scribble, so I’m wondering if it’s because they draw so many of them that they improve so much in this area.
Lastly there’s a few faces that are universally good, like 80% hits the mark and that’s the majority of top tier artists, the rest is mediocre rehashed stuff that doesn’t really stand out. God. Sorry for rant. Maybe I’m just too patrician for this world anymore. And obviously I’m so sick to shit of my own faces I’ve been drawing faces half the day and none of them look good. Maybe I have shitty observational skills or no ability to imagine. I am the artistic equivalent of a genetic deadend.

yes, good work. which brush is that, the real g pen? i've been playing with that lately and really like it. i used mainly sketch with the design pencil but i could never get the opacity right for eventually incorporating it as linework.

for the color palette, try to match it with your eye. don't select the color directly. you learn a lot more about the relationships. is what i picked warmer or cooler, is the value darker or lighter, is it more bright or less bright, etc. i'd recommend mapping out the shadows too like you would with colored pencils on a drawing as your next step if you intended on coloring that. studying the shadows and the shadow shapes chosen can help a lot too.

it's 線画用ペン from clip studio assets. I'll take your advice with the color palette - some things I noticed was how the shadow from the skin gave a more reddish shadow than, say, a shadow from the hair (which had a blue tinge).

I decided to incorporate the things I learned from doing this a few times onto my own sketch without any other artist reference (of Sakura Kyouko). It's seriously helping a lot.

I only really focused on the face and hair - figure and clothing still needs to be worked on but the resources in the OP should cover that.

Its to make it easier to get your drawing looking like the ref. By breaking it down in little grids, you have less information to worry about and can just put the puzzle pieces together. Its what photocopiers do to get as close to the ref as possible. Kinda like tracing but not really.

You can also use it for perspective stuff. Different grids for different reasons. If you were drawing something from imagination and wanted to plan out your composition, you would establish a horrizon line and vanishing points and plan your camera placement from there.

I don't think that generalization holds up in reality. There are a ton of good artists who cel-shade and follow the rules of light(as a ray). Like most(if not all) anime. Then again, it's about the artistic intent more than anything. One might use lighting correctly and incorrectly(as far as the actual physics goes) whenever convenient.

I beg to differ, but simplicity is important and most good ones use top-down lighting with some leeway, so I don't mind it, but I'm looking for cel-shaded illustrations more than anime screencaps.

Not sure how you came to this conclusion. Most anime use what'd look right in the day time, since a lot of events happen in the day time. Which is around 10 AM to 2 PM, judging from the shadows. In other times they use different angles. They break rules whenever convenient(pic related for example).

Really vague, general question. How do they get everything to look so sharp and clean? Even if I can draw the forms all fine and well, it's getting from sketch to final that I have trouble with.
Do you guys have any guide for that process? Currently I make a huge mess on the canvas and spend five hours simplifying it down to something clean looking. Gotta be a faster way. I'm intending this commercially. Need to produce like 60 images in a clean consistent style in a timely fashion. Don't ask.
Do you just keep everything autistically to separate layers and lock the transparency to modify? (don't know how to do that in krita). What I do now is more like painting and it's just not efficient or reliably consistent.

It's really not that clean, you just have to learn to make selection masks and slowly working up to painting complexity like that pic. If you saw it made you'd probably be surprised by how "easy" it is once the linework is there. Find some speedpaints or timelapses of artists you like to see a process.

You need to learn to flat and probably the lasso fill will be really helpful too which krita has. Some of that is polygonal selection with a lasso to fill in shapes on a new layer then use a soft eraser or something to fade it to the midtone, or blend with the color below.

Why do you need to do that? That sounds like a lot of work for an even messier result, if you're using smudge tool between two hard edges, you can just run it lightly along the edge and it will blend nearly perfectly, thats what the artist in the vid does

My problem is like, keeping different areas of color separate, even though the artist in the vid doesnt seem to use lots of layer masks, so I'm wondering what his process/theory behind it is. Can't really discern it from the vid unfortunately.
