I used to draw back in high school but stopped during college, now I'd like to get back on it. I would mostly draw front-facing portraits and aim at that hyper-realistic drawing style but never got good at it. These are the things I've drawn the past 5 days (criticism welcomed). Where do I stand on the /ic/ Guide? What should I practice? I tried one of those 30 second figure drawing sites and found I can't draw for shit under such constrains. Am I supposed to draw with lines an circles or what? I also can't draw from imagination and would like to work on that. Do you have general advice threads for beginners here? (sorry if I missed it) Seriously don't know where to start or what to even do besides "just keep drawing". I appreciate your comments.

Master perspective, then master gesture drawing, then master anatomy, lastly master light theory. In that order.

By perspective you mean that stuff like 2-point persepective, or drawing the same thing from different angles? Any book I could read on it or examples of what should I draw to get good at it?

dont fall for the hyperrealism meme. its ugly and serves no purpose

From what I see the problem is that you are used to drawing details before structure. You are going to have to change your way of thinking, and it might feel like starting all over again for you. Head on over to the dynamic sketching thread and see if they have a link the course vids (you can also find some of it at the art book thread OP links) As for figure drawing, there is hampton's figure drawing book or steve huston's figure drawing book (see if you can find a mega link to of vids floating around here or check cgpeers)

It goes hand-in-hand. Perspective is mostly theory, so learning how to construct: plan, 1-point, 2-point, 3-point, sphere grid, banana pan and fish-eye perspectives, from memory and sculpting them into shapes is about all you need to master it.

Norling has a great book on perspective.

I can see why someone would say it serves no purpose if one is simply copying an existing photograph, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by ugly, do you mean in a 'it prevents people from creating original work' way?. I guess in a way it's somewhat akin to the kind of work that might be dumb but still has a funny kind of merit (like domino toppling). Do you have the same opinion on people who use reference images to create something 'original' by blending them together? The only person I knew back in high school that could draw really well would always use references and would draw mostly like I do (no circles and lines, just some envelope thing to fill in) and so I never thought I was doing things the wrong way.

Might be a stupid question but do you think that way about hyperrealism as a whole? Or does it make a difference if one is drawing from a model instead of from a photo/picture? Should one eventually be able to come up with realistic drawings purely from imagination? Or is realistic not one of the qualities one should aim for when drawing?

Sorry about the wall of text. I'm also interested in anyone else's answers.

Thank you both for your answers, I'll start working with what you suggest.

Just draw is unironically the best advice you will find here. Other than that most of it is garbage.

>Just draw
Literally /beg/ mentality. If you keep drawing the same shitty drawings over and over, they aren't magically gonna improve your skill.
The 'just draw' meme is a perfect recipe to make drawings appear stiff and soulless.
