IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread >>3801847

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

I've been aimlessly drawing since 2014-2016 or so, haven't really had a desire to get serious with it, but it's practically my only hobby, I love drawing my shitty DA OCs. Have pretty much always gone by instinct. Recently I've been wanting to improve more, I love drawing my friends shit, and I get furry commission money, too. It's very nice, but I want to become satisfied with my work.

Here's a flat color I did a month ago.

Eyes are really bad tho the nose shows evidence of construction which is good.
If you're gonna do such a cartoony style, don't go all in with the eyes.
But really you need to study the actual structure of the eye. It's a sphere with two 3D lids surrounding it. If you look at her eyes, her upper eyelid has a very dark plane on the bottom, on a tangent to the eyeball, and then it has the brighter plane that we see as the surface of the eyelid. You've misinterpreted the bottom plane as just some weird eyelash thing
Go draw more.

The anatomy is bad. Study some anatomy, bones and muscles. The calves and torso are esp bad, and the feet. The face is of course cartoony but it lacks reason, cartooning well requires a decent understanding of reality, in order to choose what to warp.

I know you're just beginning, but what the heck is this shit? None of your lines are straight at all. The yellow lines I have highlighted should be flat with the horizon and the horizon itself should ALSO BE FLAT. Also, the lines that are going straight up should be... going STRAIGHT UP. I know that the red boxes that I drew weren't really perfect either though.

Also, the box on the left just doesn't have a face-- what is even going on there? A box is made up of three sets of parallel lines, as I drew in the example at the top. All of the red lines are going the same direction, all of the green lines are going up, all of the red lines are converging at a vanishing point off screen to the left and all of the blue lines are converging to a vanishing point to the right.

Hopefully this helps.

Draw with pen and understand the importance of each stroke you make, that way you won't ever put down shitty marks that you have to erase. I'm just kidding, don't take that advice seriously. Maybe if you draw lighter, the eraser mark won't be as dark so you won't notice it as much.

I understand your feeling completely. I started 94 days ago myself and have bounced between drawabox and other books on how to draw. I feel like I have made decent progress, but I know it's difficult because you don't know what you're doing or what is going to help you.

The lines don't have to be perfectly straight, they just have to be drawn with confidence. Though, at least for your horizon line, you should use a ruler and make sure that is straight. At least from what I have gathered, drawabox is meant to help with visualizing forms and how they take up 3D space, as well as refining your "mark making", basically, being able to draw lines confidently without stuttering or fucking them up.

It took me a while of doing Drawabox to start to visual forms in 3D space and it even took me multiple days to understand how boxes work. I remember even getting really upset and almost crying because I just couldn't seem to get it, then eventually I feel like I did. Understanding the bit about the three parallel sets of lines, TRULY understanding it really seemed to help me. It took a lot of experimenting on my own as well to come to those conclusions.

I also read a lot of "Perspective Made Easy" and that might have helped me as well. Sorry if I didn't help.

Use the previous boxes as a reference point for qheee you will place the next box as well as the angle of its sides. The adjacent edge should always run parallel to the previous boxes edge so that removes 1 question mark. Parallel edges of that box should also be the same angle. So that removes those question marks. One thing that is hard about this drill is that although you might know the angle of an edge, how far do you place the opposite parallel edge? That’s where you just have to practice independent unit cubes to have an intuition about the offset of that other edge. Take some more time to carefully draw straight lines and don’t rush it. Pic related might help

I hate to burst your bubble, but, the idea of "drawing with confidence" is that you know where you're going to start, then stroke across the page with confidence. Re-read the part in Drawabox about drawing lines and shit.

I have pointed out in this picture all of the times that you didn't draw a line with confidence. You drew the line too slow and "thought" too hard about it, which caused your hand to "wobble" to try and compensate.

It's like the first lesson past the part about what supplies you need.

I am glad that you are having fun though.

Look at the angles of the shoulders in yours vs the ref. Draw a line from the apex of each shoulder and you’ll notice yours is straight while the reference has a tilted line drawn between those 2 points. Overall this is a drawing accuracy issue so you need to learn how to make these comparisons to effectively draw from references.

In general it is useful to draw that shoulder line as well as a line along the top of the hip bones. The relationship between these points will help you get the twisting and angling of the pelvis and th3 upper torso.

For context, practicing jewelry rendering by hand. Having trouble with pictorial views. I read that a perspective view (using 1+ vanishing points) is more accurate than an isometric view, but does this still hold true for small objects? Doing some comparisons, it seems like an isometric view would be notably easier and more practical for a small object that's seen from above, with the idea that the object is so small the vanishing points are extremely far away to the point that parallel lines for the top and bottom of a cube would appear visually correct. When I see perspective view utilized, especially when 2 or 3 vanishing points are used, I'm left with the impression that the object is large enough that the portion farthest away is notably smaller in comparison to the portion that is closest to the viewer. Do I have the right idea?

You get it i think. Isometric is a specific case of 2 point perspective where you are infinitely zoomed so all receding lines become parallel and you view it from 45 degrees up. When you are drawing small objects like you mentioned, it won’t be isometric specifically since the camera won’t be at 45 all the time, but the receding lines will be close enough to parallel to be treated as such.

okay, should i just follow this specific text? "What you see in line A is the result of a student having their priorities mixed up, and it's a pretty normal occurrence. It shows that the student is focusing mostly on the accuracy of the stroke, and in order to continually follow the path they've set out for themselves, they sacrifice the flow of the line.
Between these two priorities - accuracy and flow - it is in fact flow that must be put first. When you execute your mark, you need to draw with a confident, persistent pace - enough to keep your brain from interfering and attempting to course-correct as you go. This is such a critical point that I drew this silly comic to illustrate the point.
Now, this probably will make your lines less accurate - but this is something that will improve with practice, and the ghosting method introduced later in this lesson will help a great deal as well" becuase thi seems like what your pointing at.

Obviously practice, but doing shorter gestures can help you focus on the flow of the pose (like 15-30sec) rather than getting bogged down in details. I also find that using a much bigger brush for the initial can be useful for this too, since it forces you to get a lot looser to get the information down (like use a brush that's about the width of like an arm or a leg in the scale you're working).

Pretty sure there is an animation thread somewhere and I highly doubt anyone here will know. In my uneducated opinion (just going by gut here) the dog/monster needs to have his lick stretched out or at different tempos (?) right now its just a uniform (?) motion- as in it kind of moves its head the same amount in each frame. Imagine if you just briefly licked something in 1 smooth uniform motion. Meanwhile imagine a cat's rought tongue licking something textured, It'd have more friction and travel slower or the head would outpace the tongue or something. take my opinion with a grain of salt I really dont know shit about animation.

First time drawing a female head.
Tried to use more construction lines like the other anon mentioned last thread but my proportions are still off and my drawing does not resemble the ref.

I struggle mainly with the eyes, and although I can pinpoint flaws once the drawing is more or less done, I am still fucking up the positioning of features. Nose is too long and mouth should be more separate from it. What fucks me up the most tho: I started with the right eye which is too far apart and all plumbing lines drag that error (mouth too wide). Is there any way to correct that in the beginning or should I just train my eye by drawing more? Also how's the overall head shape and the shadowing? Help lads I just want not to suck

You're wasting to much time trying to get your guide lines perfect. Train your hand and your whole arm first so you can draw circles and curved lines with just one to two lines. At this stage your drawing doesn't have to be perfect, it's just to give you a rough idea of where all the bodyparts go. Also, try to avoid chicken-scratching (making hundreds of small lines instead of one smooth curve)

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but does anyone else get pissed off at people who CONSTANTLY make excuses for their art? Like they do shitty fucking MSPaint drawings or something and when you tell them to stop drawing with a mouse in MSPaint they're like
>"Bro, I'm just doing this for fun lol I'm not gonna make a career out of it!!"
but then at the same time get super defensive and make up excuses for why their "art" is so shit?
>"Bro, I don't draw all the time"
>"Bro, I got IRL stuff going on lmao"
>"Bro, I can't afford a tablet" (nevermind the fact that they could just draw on fucking paper)
>"Bro, it's just my 'shit posty' kind of style" (yes, I have legitimately heard this as an excuse in that exact wording)
Like there is this retarded idea that learning and improving is not the same as having fun and that they are opposing ideas. Like you can either only have fun drawing or you can only be serious and grind out fundamentals, no fucking in between. I hear this "dude, I just do it for fun" excuse all the fucking time, not just with drawing but with EVERYTHING. It's time to stop making fucking excuses. If you TRULY cared it wouldn't matter how much "irl shit" is happening, because you would make time to improve your art. If you REALLY only do it "just for fun" or whatever, that's fine I guess, but you could be having a lot MORE fun by improving and learning.

Pretty /beg/ myself so take my post with a grain of salt, but I think you should push your values more, especially when you've got that much of a difference in lighting, it has a name which I forgot. Another thing I can see is that your shadows and highlights are almost all the same red but with higher or lower value. Try choosing some other relatively colder colors for the shadows, not like this one of course, but you get the idea I hope.
Keys to drawing has an overview that let's you in quickly, and I think you can find a few youtube videos (not tutorials) that go more into depth in color theory and light

blend those highlights mf. You're doing good with the values but make it consistent. Notice that you left the bottom too light. This pepper has very angular shape and planes. The construction needs work. Perspective is wonky. The colors of your face are a bit unnatural and too pale. Your rendering and lighting is vague and have no cohesion. Think about the environment your character is in. What kind of light is there, how dark or bright is it, and which direction, and how that is affecting the appearance of your character. Remember that characters don't exist in a vacuum, so always place them with an environment in mind, and this will dictate how your character should look. That will help make the rendering process simpler, more cohesive, and eliminate the need to guess.

It may help to look at lighting references for the head and figure out which one you're trying to accomplish for this.

okay heres a paper with your advice taken to heart, im drawing them longer and more fluedly though i havent quite gotten it down yet, i feel as though i should really focus more on lesson 1 even though i have read tthrough the course in a reasonable number of days, is this i great path to take? because im right at the part where he tells you to just draw a box.

Any tips for rendering skin like Sakimichan and Ruan Jia? I read something about hard and soft edges and watched Ruan painting a girl but he must be using a special tool.
I only use the mixer brush and select hard round and soft round, but it still looks like mere paint and not like solid realistic skin.

Dawg, c'mon. This isn't rocket science. Pick two points on the page, then draw a line between them MULTIPLE TIMES. Go over the same line like I do repeatedly in this example. And CONFIDENTLY STROKE ACROSS THE PAGE. Do not slowly move your pen from point A to Point B. Just stroke across the page in one SOLID motion. Draw multiple lines over the same line.

And of course you should focus more on lesson 1, You shouldn't move on until you have some idea of exactly what it's trying to teach you.

In this example you posted you don't stroke over the same line multiple times and there is also still some wobbling. If this is starting to frustrate you, you should try learning from multiple sources for a bit. But for real, you need to read EXACTLY what he says and do EXACTLY WHAT HE SAYS. Like I shouldn't have to go through the lesson myself and point out exactly where he says this stuff, but here it is

>the student is focusing mostly on the accuracy of the stroke, and in order to continually follow the path they've set out for themselves, they sacrifice the flow of the line.
>Between these two priorities - accuracy and flow - it is in fact flow that must be put first. When you execute your mark, you need to draw with a confident, persistent pace - enough to keep your brain from interfering and attempting to course-correct as you go.
>>3813579
>>3813595
Just keep practicing doing your lines and ellipses. You need to. It isn't that big of a deal. There are a lot of things that you won't understand just by doing it over and over again, but drawing a decent line is the one thing that you WILL get just by doing it over and over again.

why is there a strand of hair touching her left eyebrow? look at the girl, that isn't there but you drew it anyway
look at the nose, the bottom section of yours is straight and flat whereas hers is diagonal, slightly upwards
same with the lips, you drew them straight but hers are curved upwards and not symmetrical

you need to draw exactly what you see, not what you think should be there
I'd recommend doing the upside down Igor Stravinsky drawing thing in the sticky, it's very helpful, beyond that read Keys to Drawing

Mmh not sure but I think this one doesn't come with any drawing program, but that's your decision. Also, it's active area (the part of it you draw on) is fairly small. I roughly cut out a piece of paper of that size and compared it with my tablet in pic related. Not necessarily bad, but it heavily encourages chicken scratching the smaller it is, so watch out you don't gain bad habits. Hope this helps.
