I honestly like it a lot more than most RJ threads we had recently.
The composition is clear, it reads well, it carries the message accross and the whole thing is coherent.
It's also more original than "skull rider brandishing a sword" #5521 that the last thread was about.
Pretty much everything that I don't like in this pic can be pinned on artistic choices.

It's not about any particular ones, you just should think of what you're doing in every particular situation. They talk so much about atmospheric perspective that's it's easy to start using it everywhere without thinking, as a tool similar to linear perspective. Of course, atmopheric perspective always works (as long as there's atmosphere), but its strength depends on the weather (and on the artist's intent). Sometimes making the air very clear can have a great effect. In this painting the girl is not supposed to be the main focus of attention. She will draw attention anyway, by just being there, by having her eye visible, by performing an action. There's no need to make her stand out more with atmospheric perspective. Saturated greens on the other hand make the landscape stand more prominent.

People severely misunderstand what a concept artist is - Ruan Jia is an illustrator, he is a very poor designer, many of his designs dont seem designed or thought out, or intruiguing from a narrative/ world building point of view, which is what most concept artists actually help with working on a game or film, apart from the people like him who do sexy splash art for loading screens.

A lot of these paintings hes making are completely devoid of narrative and concept, and are very rendered visual spectacles, that dont have a lifespan beyond the appreciation for the rendering of the vibration of the colors.

He is very good at painting, and navigating contrast, but he uses his skills very poorly from a narrative and poetic point of view.

He is basically a person with very articulate language, full of colourful words - who knows grammar very well, but who couldnt write a captivating heartfelt poem if his life depended on it.

No, I'm pointing out what a massive faggot you're being over someone criticizing Ruan Jia's art like some kind of pathetic whiteknight. Protip: not everyone is going to like the thing you like as much as you do and the sooner you can accept this fact, the less likely you'll chimp out at any criticism about it.
>It's very clear that /ic/ is crying about a guy that they can barely approach in skill level, in addition to they there are very few people in digital art that can render like that at all.
There are crabs on this board undoubtedly but not once did I ever mention being able to do better than him, or that he's even a shit artist, you fucking retard. Sounds to me like you're the one projecting anger and insecurity here.

This is a very poor generic design, with the elements haphazardly thrown together, what kind of character is this even?

So ornamented armor and a blaster from star wars, with kitty ears and blue hair, like none of these elements are really harmonised with eachother, and the face is super generic and cutesy - i have no sense of the world this character belongs to, other than it apparently contains everything generic.

Still an illustrator, sure he does splash art, and environment paintings for a game like guildwars etc- which are really good, again, im not saying this guy is a bad painter, im just saying hes not a good designer :-) and to be a concept artist, which really should be called concept designer - means that you have a good sense of design, and worldbuilding.

He is really good at illustrating, not really designing or building narratives.

Come on man you know this is true, you can find tons of things on artstation with better designs and narratives than ruan jias stuff?

Its not even out there to think this way.

sure - ill give you that, its a piece showcasing "design" more than it is illustrative - but that really goes for a low-percentage of his work. and most of his "design" is really just an excuse to play with illustrative tools and to paint, not to show a design but to have something to render.

I honestly think his landscapes and backgrounds are gorgeous, I just don’t understand why he renders human skin that way, it’s offputting to me. it makes his human characters look like cheap 3D models straight out of an early ps3 game. he’s obviously very skilled but I just don’t get his aesthetic choices.

lol, there are unquestionably people who excel at most things and are atleast good at everything.

How about you point me to some intense dynamic angles from Leonardo or Raphael? Oh wait you cant.

The masters of today are far better than those of before because unlike those masters who had to spend time just inventing these methods we now take for granted, pros today can simply lean on aquired knowledge and further improve what already exists. There exists more talented artists per capita today than any time in history, so you'll definately have more living masters today than before.

And Michael Angelo altered proportions based on where the viewer would be standing. To say they're not better than the artists of today because you say they didnt draw warped some dynamic warped perspective is asinine to say the least. Masters of the past were incredible at foreshortening and could do whats being done today. There is very little differentiating the masters of the past from today, to the point where it becomes subjective of who is better than who. Furthermore you're comparing Apple's to oranges, fine art to more commercial works if fisheye is really what you consider to be the defining factor.

Don't much care for the way its rendered/painted but I love the structure here, the monolithic white limestone walls and towers topped with bright green grass and the deep blue sky above gives a comfy feeling as well as a good sense of scale, it's aesthetic as fuck

This is a place I'd love to explore. The only bit that feels jarringly out of place is in the center courtyard, and those eastern style buildings and elements but I imagine its some formerly abandoned ancient stronghold rediscovered by a different culture who make it their home and that's what the ruins strewn about are implying too

Nonsense, quality and quantity don't have a direct correlation.
Find me one living artist that's half as good as Bouguerau, Zorn, Waterhouse, Sargent or Repin. Art quality peaked in 19th century, then photography took root, post modernism became a thing and from there it all went downhill.
