You've at least got some semblance of understanding proportion so keep that up. But do look at the sticky and find the fundamentals. You need to stop symbol drawing (drawing what you think you see, like the symbols you see in your head when you think of things) and learn to draw what you really see. Learn how things are really made up of forms and internalize it.

Your own style will come out of learning your fundamentals and I actually think it could be really cool. I see what you're trying to do with your lines and I really like it. Please practice seriously on the things mentioned, I'd love to see what your style really turns out to be!

What do you mean when you say "practicing seriously"? What are you practicing? If you just want to create doodly comics or something I guess you can get there by just trying to create doodly comics. If you really want to get serious I think you should figure out how actual human anatomy looks before you start stylizing it. Gesture drawing would also be an important thing to practice if you want your characters to have a really animated look.

As for your work: It just looks like any old middle-school/high-school doodle. I think it would be futile to get into any more depth since you weren't asking for anything more specific but I'll list a couple of things. legs are different lengths. No line economy. She's cross eyed. Her hands don't look like hands etc. Fabric doesn't look like fabric. Hair doesn't looks like hair etc. I could just go on and list everything in your drawing so instead I'm just going to say: Stop doodling and try getting better at some fundamental skills.

I don't really need to. Just pick anything in your image and there's something wrong with it. I can kind of see a style that you're going for that might be appealing some time in the future but you need to get your fundies down first. It's not a bad thing though. That's how anybody's art is going to look when they're at the start of their journey.

Pic. related is something that James Zapata did when he was ~22 years old. It's basically just as bad as your work and he got to work with Applibot about 5 years later after some hard fucking work so try not to get too depressed. Everybody has to start somewhere.

Nah you're about the foot in the forefront, I struggled a lot with it, and as I guessed, showing that small line above the toes is not enough to help the viewer brain connect the whole leg. It is like when someone draws person with a fish close up to the viewer, it looks odd if you just draw the fist itself right in front of the shoulder without seeing any of the arm, even if it is technically correct.

Another thing I'm wondering, is if I need to rotate the foot to be more in line with the knee or if the amount of rotation in the ankle is fine as it is.

Yeah that would be because you actually don't understand something here. Your proportions are really wonky, for one. Your forms are okay I suppose but you're having trouble with either understanding how values work or understanding how to render things, but I can't tell which because this is such a rough block in.

I'd suggest doing a study, as detailed and accurate as you can muster (and it can take months if it needs to but it would help you). Get an academic plaster cast for drawing, or do some barque plates. And then draw it.

Make the proportions right, refine your line art until it's crisp and clean, block in your major shadows, and then go to town on your blending and rendering like in pic related. Go as slowly as you need to get it right but the entire point of this is to get a picture done that is so close to reality (with the exception of any bounced light in shadows that confuse the forms) that people look at it and go "wow is that a photo?"

There's no /beg/ thread so I figure it can't hurt to post here.

So i've been doing some more character practice and I'm figuring out the 'formula' to get this character somewhat consistent and decent looking(aiming for second from top left).

I tried to draw her from the side for the first time and jesus what did I do wrong? I can't put my finer on it but it just looks 'off'. Especially compared to the front and 3/4 views.

Any advice, critique or suggestions?

Right now it sort of looks like the figure is coming towards us until the knees, then the legs look bent, not quite 90 degrees, not enough to eliminate the sense of the calves moving towards us in space.

You can keep the part above the navel as it is, but I would suggest you exaggerate the perspective from the waist down, so that it is less confusing.

The rendering is definitely very nice and 'comfy', but the perspective is jarringly distracting. It looks very wonky.

The issue is that there is a severe disconnect between the extreme, warped perspective of the top of the tree, and the normal perspective of everything else (ground, back trees, clouds, etc.). In other words, you've applied an extreme fish-eye perspective to the tree (and only part of it), and the result is that you're not getting that "looking up at a tree" impression that you're obviously going for.

The solution is to distort the perspective of everything else to match the the fish-eye perspective that you're going for with the tree. Pic related is a hacked-together solution to give you an idea of how the rest of the drawing can be distorted. A big part of this is to decrease the size of the tree trunk as it gets farther away from the viewer, as to suggest it's going back in space (which yours currently does not do despite the extreme perspective).

A cohesive perspective is tricky to pull off in such distorted perspectives like this, but it's really necessary if you want to get the effect of looking up at something like this. Hope this helps!

I totally see what you mean and I hope this doesn't bother my client. I think it helps to know though this is is meant to be a pan-up from the bottom to the top. This is going to be used in a visual novel, basically in the original size of this one is three fullscreens on top of each other. My clients requirement was that the bottom screen looks completely normal in terms of perspective and then the warp happens at around the middle until you finally look up. If it was meant to be viewed in a single go, I would have planned it differently. Nonetheless, I knew this was going to be a problem but when panning through it it looked okay to me.

You need to spend more time planning out the comp and perspective (drawing) and less time painting. A few more thumbnails could've helped you avoid this. You'll know for next time, I bet the client will still like it, perspective is always the last thing a customer complains about because you need to be an artist to even know it's wrong, but if you want better commissions from more knowledgeable people or companies with more money to spend, you gotta work smarter not harder. Larger commissioners usually know exactly what they want and it's hard to slip mistakes past them, and often more money goes to art that has the talent AND fundamentals, but you've got the talent part down so far.

What's the perspective doing? The tiny hill of foreground rock behind the girl is too flat and smooth. Everything behind the "skull" is just generic flat plain+mountains that's impossible to mess up, and everything in front with hard form either looks broken or hidden with excessive smoothing.

Also the foreground lighting is drastically different than everything behind it. It feels like someone is shining a cool fill light directly from the audience's pov, like some kind of set.

You cant render it better until you can see and draw the forms better. Stop painting and go back to drawing forms.

Her ass and lower back are sinking into the plane.
Forearm is curved like it has rubber bones.
AK looks tilted downward into the plane at the stock.
Boobs are very asymetrical.
Everything is rendered too loosely to definitively say much else, but there's probably lots of errors getting hidden by the mess.

Was trying to go for a moody and anxious feel with this piece, but a lot of the purples clashed in the end and didn’t convey the mood as well as I hoped - would the piece have worked out better if I neautralised the purples?
Also, any tips on how to lay down the watercolours smoother? I tried layering to add texture but ignore ended up coming off amateurish and I think it may be because the colour pooled in some spots.

Ah yeah, I can see the values being on roughly the same level, that’ll be something I need to work on. What in particular could I improve with the composition though? I thought that the stark contrast in colour between the character and background helped create a composition in which the character is the focus, or was that lost because the values are too close in range and everything is the same level of vibrancy?

>> No.3804140

>>3804121
the problem is not a lack of contrast, there is plenty already(pure black and white), in fact you shouldlimit these values to specific areas of interest, not the background, for example. and making the characters color opposed to the background is okay, but it is also a cause for the amateurish look: its too much of an obvious resource.
The composition lacks a point of interest toward which the character is responding, and looks way too cave like (horizontal rather than vertical) to be a forest of sorts.

The only major problem with this is the perspective. it appears as though the hole is extending very far into the background, too far, and is breaking the illusion. Next time when using perspective like this, be more aware of how objects extend along the z axis. Often they are much shorter than you'd think to draw them.

From all the things I think the prespective looks very off. You have the bottom of the trees going up gradually and that maybe works with the house but the cart alone makes no sense in that context then. It looks like you have two horizon lines, one for the back and one for the front. And while that foreshortening on the horse looks okay, it gets wonky with the rest of the cart. We shouldn't be able to see so much of the sides of it.

Im really trying to get my head around value, I think Im confusing myself by overthinking things. I made this paint sketch following the info Ive recently learned, could some anons give me a headsup about what to improve?

For instance when Im choosing what colour to make a blue sky, I think to myself
>ok, its midday so its a relatively bright and saturated blue colour
so I go to pick that on the colour wheel but then I remember that blues are inherently dark in value, making it darker than my own choice on the colour wheel (further along the value axis)

so essentially I have no idea what colour to pick. This paint sketch was done with me just picking colours as usual without thinking about value.

I was going to do an overpainting but there's too much wrong with this. I'd basically have to start from scratch. I recommend you do that too. Make a proper construction drawing of his facial proportions and work on your values first and come back to this thread with that. You should also post your reference for stuff like this.

Honestly he just looks like the Toxic Avenger at this stage. I wish I was just trying to be mean here but look at his eye positions.

So here you go:

I don't know what you were going for with the mutant eyes. Just looked creepy in a bad way. I just referenced my own stupid face from the mirror. I think his eyes are still too far apart though.

I don't think it's a good idea to have both the upper and lower teeth showing if you're trying to paint an appealing character so I changed that. I did the rim light just to show you why it's a really bad idea to go into strong whites on your image before you're adding your finishing touches. They're not accurate but you get my point... Don't have time to focus on brush economy or anything.

Normally I'd do a sort of sculptural line sketch that shows me the planes of the face and then do a 1-2 value block in of the shadow shapes and then start thinking about edge control, values and slight hues. Only after this I'd start working in with saturated colors and shit but you don't have to work like that. Here I just pushed some paint untill I got something slightly more appealing (IMO).

Not sure what kind of feedback you're looking for but I hope this helps.

Nah, I wasn't really looking for validation because I know it's bad. I've been trying to draw for 3.5 months but hell, I can't to anything properly. Even after attempting the "250 boxes challenge", I still struggle drawing and rotating the most simple geometric shapes.
I have a pessimistic view of life so I know that even if I continue drawing (and I will), I'll never reach a point where I'll be satisfied with my work. I'm 100% positive that I can keep trying for 5, 10 years and I'll still be far from being called good. It's the same with every project I try to do, be it programming, writing, """making music""", etc. It makes me wonder if I'm really, really low IQ or if I was just born with no talent.
The otter I posted was actually my first try doing something digitally, but I can assure you the traditional wouldn't look much better.

I'm still loving this! There's a strong sense of 3-dimensionality on the character. I feel like the blue of the sky is causing a slight tangent on her atm. if you just look at the thumbnail. Maybe if you either toned it down or made it go diagonally across the whole image (or possibly both) it would help everything read better?

Kudos anyway! I'm pretty sure this is going to turn out epic.

The thumbnail on the apple looks okay but you need some edge control. It's okay to lose edges in the shadows but you want to render your area of focus more than the surrounding areas. The second image just looks lazy. Pic related and some related stuff:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRewRXX7H6s
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v403/MrDelicious/Artwork/stilllllivin.jpg

Doesn't matter if some of the stuff is digital. Same logic would apply here.

>>3807684

-> /beg/. I'm sorry but you don't seem to have any understanding of perspective, edge control, value control, color or understanding of lighting. There's really nothing I can say about this except: Figure some basics out and come back in about 6 months.

Been trying to remember the name of these games for years, thanks famalam.

Nice style on this one, but I'd watch the line quality in some areas. You can see the pixels in your lines, so I'd smooth some of it out, or add that texture in another way to make it look intentional.

Aaaaaaaaaaa
it looked so much nicer to me as a sketch.
how do I get better? My aspiration is to be mediocre pixiv hentai artist tier, and not deviantart edgy 16 year old tier. I'm using a mouse and keyboard + gimp to draw as they are all that I have at my disposal.

also please ignore the lower abdomen scar.

More construction before going to the rendering and oversized fetish tits. You can do better hands and faces than that. If you don’t have a tablet just use pencil and paper.

It's a scar from a panniculectomy (stomache skin removal)...
>>3809622
I'm not too worried about the hands as those were more due to a lack of effort put into them. I really worry about the faces though because thats what screams deviantart tier terrible to me and makes me hate it. I sketched the body with pen and paper and then loaded the image into gimp to trace with the path tool. The face I sketched but I wasnt happy with it and changed it when working om it in gimp. Pic related is the body I was using as a reference (for the oversized fetish tits).

I guess I aughta focus on face construction and practice them more.

Not sure where you want to go in the end but you mentioned being less deviantart and more like a pixiv artist so I tried doing this.

If you want to draw anime you should just grab the bull by the horns and grab a bunch of illustrations/doujin pages and trace over them as practice. Realize what the key points are in contemporary anime.

It's pretty impossible to say from something sketchy like that. Show us something more refined. At least tell us what you're trying to do with your piece. I can't tell if he's supposed to be cartoony or realistic. Can't tell if he's supposed to be silly or bad ass. I'll still give it a shot:

Is he riding a tiny horse and is his body going through the horse's back? Even if you're working on a cropped area of an image you need to think about these things. How would the riders body interact with the animal etc.

Where the heck is your light source? You should have this figured out before you even start shading.

Your skulls look pretty bad. They don't seem stylized but they don't look realistic either. Just looks like you're doing skulls without knowing how skulls look. I did a quick over painting to the guy's face but I'll leave the shoulder skull up to you. I couldn't tell if he was supposed to be wearing a mask or not but that's none of my business.

My main piece of advice: Get some fucking reference! Get a ton of reference of guys on horses. Get reference of knights, armor, skulls, swords etc. There's no shame in doing that. When you do work from reference and you'll retain that shit in your brainbox and you can do shit like this from imagination later.

Hope this helped.

I didn't try to exactly copy the colors of the ref but I tried to just improve your piece as I feel is the correct way to do it.

Your skin looks lifeless because there's no color/saturation shift as you go from dark to light so when you have something like a specular highlight it doesn't look like a specular highlight because it is following the same lighting rule set you've used throughout the whole figure.

I could ramble on but I'm pretty shit at explaining these things so hopefully this helps. Try dragging the color picker across what I did to see how the colors change from dark to light.

Thank you- this is by far the most effort anyone has ever put into a critique for me so I really appreciate this. Is there a rule for skin hues? I know there are concepts that I'm fuzzy on in terms of the subsurface scattering of blood vessels and what not but other than that are you just kind of randomly choosing hues? Thanks for this!

Just realized that you icreased the saturation each time in a stair step manner. Is there a reasoning for this? I never know which way to bring the saturation in terms of light and shadow

I'm none of those guys but I have a protip to help you with the last part of your crits. Did you know that you can go to 4Chan's "settings" at the top of the page and put on Image hover? Then when you take your mouse over an image it shows the image in full size so it fits in your browser (the bottom window is me holding the mouse over that anon's image). I also have my 4chan set to the "Tomorrow" color scheme if you're wondering about that. It's much easier on the eye IMO.

I think you're approaching your rendering wrong if you're going for the style in >>3811052.

They seem to have really subtle value separation with hard edges only on the edges of hard drop shadows. It's like you're trying trying to put a small nail on the wall with a jackhammer atm. I personally prefer some strong & hard strokes but if that's the style you're going for you're probably not doing it right. I think you're using the right brushes but brushes aren't your issue really.

Moving on: I think you're doing the opposite of what you should be doing. You have a nice image with slight value separation and you made the value separation stronger when you should be making it slighter (according to the style you're going for). I don't think that's a good image to study for shit like this anyways. Study something simpler and just focus on the style you're going for and not all this complicated neon bullshit. Maybe even have some lines if that's the style you're going for? Sorry if it sounds like I'm trying to be mean here. I'm really not. Just tired.

I've been up for 30h. I don't have time to make her look like Charleze so I just made her "Pretty lady No. 455" so I can go to bed. Instead of making more hard edges I tried to emphasize the round shapes on her face. Those anime characters tend to look pretty young so I guess it makes sense... I used soft brushes in my thing to make things go quicker but I think if I wanted to emulate the style you're going for I'd go with hard brushes with low opacity.

Tl;dr: Stop studying weird lighting setups, focus on stylization and smooth value/hue-separation.

Aye aye...

The reason is that it looks better. But to elaborate If you think of the light source you have, either cool or warm, then by definition it must be cooler or warmer than the shadow areas. Reflected light is usually warmer than direct light, so as I gradate from the shadows to the lights I slowly desaturate and hue shift to a colder color.

However you can break these rules, it's just that you should try to understand them thoroughly before goofing around with them.

I'd love to explain in depth how I think about color and lighting but it's more of a feeling than a hard science which is why it can be exhausting to explain.
