Who do all my heads look like they have Downs? It's so incredibly frustrating, I'm thinking of using a gimmick like making everyone in my comic wear masks or making them furry
I draw a ball then a middle line for the brow then I draw the eyes and mouth but there's something I'm doing fundamentally wrong with the proportions. I tried changing the mouth shape and making the nose smaller and the eyes different in many ways but it always comes out so ugly.

Oh when I draw larger it's even worse! The heads I draw on, say, a full A4 sheet are absolutely hideous.

Most comics are drawn larger than publication size. It's not a hard rule, but the common size is twice the actual printed size, so you can draw more easily - and images tighten up when reduced.

I rarely draw or paint at 1:1 ratio when it's being printed. Don't worry about drawing at actual size, your computer can resize at the end. Draw big. Own the page. Thumbnails even. Draw as big as you need to be able to draw the level of detail you want.

I mean I'm a red-blooded ass-man, and the way I see it, if I'm going to get better by doing something long and tedious, may as well do it with some very interesting subject matter.

Obviously these women didn't actually come from the simpsons, but I'm wondering is it just an issue of cheap, limited palette or can I find a way to make good work outside of spending premium fees?

Also, thanks for the response, as always

I've done that, I don't like it for a number of reasons, mostly that printouts of scanned inks don't come out nearly as good as the original scanned inks, at least on my laser printer. Maybe with a better printer? IDK

Something I do is sketch things digitally then print out and ink over that with a lightbox. It's so much easier to manipulate compositions and layouts digitally.

Another thing I did was scan things twice, first the inks then the watercolored inks and superimpose the ink layer over the colors, you get really crisp dark lines that make the colors look much better too.

You’re trying to put dimensional arms on a dimensionless paper doll. I see you’re doing ball joints and shapes, but why? It seems like you don’t know the reason for such things and you’re just adding them to flat images.

The humerus is too long and the forearm is too short. Thighs are too long. The fully extended arm should have the tip of the fingers at half a thigh's length.

Do you actually block in the main masses of the body like in pic related? Just imagine two connected boxes, one for the chest and the other for the hips. If you offset them slightly you obtain a more dynamic gesture (watch Renaissance statues to see how they use this, contrapposto or figura serpentinata), and it's easier to draw the legs and the arms from there. Even just a little bit makes your figure appealing.

You need to learn the muscles to draw a good arm. There are subtle shapes even in feminine arms that are given by how the shoulder inserts into the arm etc.

If you're learning you need to understand the basic mannequin, draw perspective lines if you need aid to place the main masses in space. You should be able to draw a mannequin in any position, pretty much. After you know how to do that it's all about building the anatomy on top, anatomy is just memorization, it seems like a lot but you start with the big things first like the general shape of the chest and the main muscles and then you go in depth with the smaller things.

The best way to go about this is to make characters you care about and keep a book like Bridgman or Loomis handy and follow the process as you go. The final product being something you care about will make studying easier, don't fall into the grind meme.

Thanks for the reply man and you're right. I'm not making full use of the benefits that constructing a drawing out of 3d shapes can give me.

I'm not sure I have me head wrapped around it completely but I'll pay more attention to it.

>>3790602
Thanks for the thought out response anon.

I actually do use Loomis as reference a lot and I'm following his proportion guides. Each drawing is about 11inches broken into 8 separate sections. I then try follow the rest of the placements for his guide.

I do use blocks to build up my 'stickman'(?) but like I mentioned in my reply to other anon I've mostly neglected to use 3d shapes outside of the head.

If it's at all relevant the block I usually use for the chest is akin to an upside down trapezoid and for the hips it's like an upside down triangle with a rectangle attached to the top. I'm still trying to shake some of the habits I ingrained when trying to learn to draw manga/anime as a teen.

Anyway man, thanks for the reply. I'll pay more attention to building up the mannequin properly.

Anyway this is what my frames generally look like but this time I did try and pay a bit more attention. I shouldn't have done it in this pose because I'm still barely getting to grips with a front view but I thought it might be better to demonstrate me trying to draw in a 3d space.

Yeah that's how you burn out really fast

>Does it look like I have a better grip of this or am I still not getting.
You are trying to draw the masses directly. Draw the chest and pelvis as literal boxes, then you sculpt the shape of the ribs etc. on top. and draw the shape of the bones for the legs and arms., then draw the volumes on top. Go from simple to complex.
The legs don't attach to the front of the hips like that, they go to the sides and in females it's quite pronounced. Make a very simple mannequin and then look at anatomy to fill in the shapes. Anatomy is all about memorization. I recommend looking at rotatable 3D models online especially for the pelvis, it's going to make it much easier to understand the shape. The hips themselves in women are only slightly larger, what really gives shape to them is the legs coming out from the sides and the iliac crest.
BASIC mannequin > big bones > muscles

There's something very slightly off about the facial proportions. The eyes, mouths etc don't seem to QUITE line up. I almost hate to tell you that because literally everything else about it is pretty good. You're very close to being "skilled", at least by my own standards. And for what it's worth you're also better than me.

Needs a bit of both. You need ref to understand what those shapes resemble.

What I believe is a good exercise is draw your picture, identify the issues, draw a similar pose from reference, draw your initial one again with the memory of the last drawing fresh. Compare the improvement.

very cool but thats not a sketch anymore imho this is a finished piece already

also sometimes it seems that you're trying to hide your insecurities by choosing aesthetic line curvature and or thick expressive strokes over realism. (backline, shoulderbone, hair etc.)

I know this because I do it too, if you really wanna get better you need to be sure about the 3d shape first. only figuring out the main shadows might take you as long as it took to finished your piece but you can be a lot more confident when advancing from sketching to coloring.

Dont get me wrong it looks good only it makes me imagine that when I asked you to draw her in another perspective you'd have a very hard time

Dude that’s actually a really in depth criticism and I appreciate it ! The reason for the thick line art is that I wanted to create a drawing that embodies all the things that I’m insecure about drawing- like people from the side, obscure light sources, thick line art (I normally do thin) and limited colour use. I do see exactly what you mean though, I’ll try working on what you told me :’) thank you

I think the other anon is on the right track with the FAS thing. Google image search physical characteristics of fetal alcohol syndrome and compare to your drawings. A big thing with both fas and down is extra skin coming down the inside corners of the eyes and upward slanting eyes so I would stop making the top line of the eyes so hard and bold all the way across. Make it thinner as you go inward. Other characteristics of fas is flat bridge of nose, short nose, thin upper lip, and not having that divot in between nose and mouth.

As you can see in these pics I've had issues with consistent character design, especially faces, so I've been trying to improve on that. Looking at them makes me sad.

It helped when I figured out how much to properly utilise Loomis' 'Ball and Plane' method to get a consistent base for the head. These were my first attempts today.

>>3797166
Keep up the good stuff anon. Have you found it difficult to draw the same character and get it to look like it in your head? I mean as far as I can see you've done a pretty good job at getting her consistent but I was just wondering if you ever feel like you haven't?

It's strange because with characters that are unrealistic I never have this problem past the part where I'm designing them, but if I create a human character my consistency falls apart completely. I'm /beg/ tier with human faces

>> No.3800780

>>3800701
Yes, /ic/ is quite slow compared to the other boards. Then with a sketchbook thread, you have to take into account that a good bit of people on this board don't draw or only rarely. There are also people who dont want their work associated with this site. And a lot of people only do digital.

These things are why sketchbook threads are so comfy though. Just a small amount of people sharing some daily scratchings.

So i've been doing some more character practice and I'm figuring out the 'formula' to get this character somewhat consistent and decent looking(aiming for second from top left).

I tried to draw her from the side for the first time and jesus what did I do wrong? I can't put my finer on it but it just looks 'off'. Especially compared to the front and 3/4 views.

Any advice, critique or suggestions?

It's just called "natural paper" or something like that. Hard to get a hold of though.
