hey guys, so I pretty much stopped browsing /ic/ cause most everyone here is focused on "making it", which usually translates to making a career out of art.
I've been drawing on and off for years and it's a nice hobby to have but I find it difficult to relate to most of the peeps I've met here.

If you're like-minded and want to do art on the side go ahead and post in this thread, maybe we can put together a discord server for shitposting, art and funsies.

Do post your art and hey, lets make some art friends that aren't stressed af because they're not generating enough income through their art hahahaha

Yeah I relate to this feel. I like producing things, but I don't really care about "making it" or becoming a master of anything. I just draw things I think look cool sometimes. as a hobbyist your kinda like a distraction to the people who want to make money. Its not that hobbyists arent real artists, its just that if im going to network or be your friend its because i hope that your gonna be trying to go places too. When you dont its just like a fun jerk off relationship but a waste of time. a lot of people dont really have any other option than to make it. so when someone comes in and is like "oh im here just for fun" its kinda like a slap in the face to the artists who take it seriously. not that i feel this way, i think most people come to art from a hobby, like a lot of things but i wouldnt disclose to people that your a hobbyist or professional. i think its should be used more descriptive than prescriptive.

when you treat everyone like a friend friend then things can get emotional and relationships get fucked up. if more people were conscientiously aware of the benefits that their friend circles provided they would be less likely to fuck them up. if you cant handle a synchronous friendship and professional relationship than your probably not gonna make.

I like this, I feel like a lot of 4chan artists are drawing for the sake of getting good but don’t have any other passion in art, which is what limits them. Like even if they did get good there would be no point because they wouldn’t have any ideas for using their newly obtained skills on- they would just keep doing light studies, and anatomy studies, and figure sketches, without any finished pieces because they have nothing that they’re actually interested in.

A relationship is as much the energy you get out as it is the energy you put in. If you've got goals and ambition then the healthiest thing to do is surround yourself with like minded people. Everyone's got friends they just fuck around with, but if those are the only people in your life then it'll be difficult to find people to push you towards a higher place. No one is owed your time.

I'm with you, artists shoud have some kind of interest outside just being good.
You like anime? draw anime,
You like cats? draw cats,
You like insects? draw insetcs

>> No.3788877

Exactly ! They don’t see the steps to learning art. For example, if you’re drawing anime and decide the faces look bad, you would look into the anatomy of the face to stylise it; if you’re drawing with your newly improved style and decide the arms look weird you’d study the anatomy of the body. After being satisfied with anatomy you might decide that the lighting isn’t interesting on your drawings, so naturally you would practice it. I don’t understand how people can sit down at a desk and grind for 6 hours trying to force artistic abilities into their brain, then make fun of people who learn art for fun.

At the end of the day I want to be around like minded people that push me to work harder and succeed. I already have a bunch of friends to call up to play games or drink, but art is my passion and I take it very seriously. When I talk to unmotivated artists who don't work as hard as I do, it takes away some of my own enthusiasm as well and those conversations don't make me very happy.

I think everyone should do what is right for them to seek out happiness, but sometimes what you have to go against the established social norms. I think too often we gauge others on our own metrics of what it means to be happy and create well intentioned catastrophies. Other times we just want to find some differences in others that allows us to resent them and therefore ignore a new perspective of pursuing happiness that might make us question our own.

I ask myself, what brings me fulfillment? One of those things is art. Then I ask, am I fulfilled by my art? And I think no, if only that line was better, if only I knew more about that object, if only I drew more, and these thoughts keep me going. I want to improve myself, learn continuously, and draw a lot, but not every artist feels that way.

I just find it hard to relate to those artists.

It's weird how art as a hobby isn't the mainstream opinion on this board. Having a STEM career (like engineering and applied, not pure math/theoretical physics autism shit) as your main, means you can have an actual living income while being mentally healthy and doing art, your way and not the market demanded way, on the side. No one cares about fine art anymore because of the ubiquity of low entertainment culture so that's out of the question unless you have rich parents. Most concept art is soulless generic garbage and you will end up working under some no-name company's vision instead of your own. I've never seen an average freelance artist on the internet that doesn't make less than min wage Mcdonalds cashiers. They probably make less than NEETs getting obligatory autismbux from the guvmint every month. The mildly popular artists barely make above Mcdonalds cashier salary. Really, hobbychads are the ubermensch of art and careercucks should kys already instead of wallowing in their perpetual depression and desolation.

>> No.3789603

>>3789557
Unironically this.

Whenever careercucks autistically screech about "ngmi", they never stop to think that maybe "making it" isn't the end all be all goal.

I wouldn't recommend art as a career at all, unless you have rich parents. All art is pretty much corporate and soulless now; it's part of an "industry". Call me a commie, by art shouldn't be an 'industry' in the first place, because it results in the soulless mainstream garbage we have today.

If you're gonna do art, do it for yourself, don't whore out to some higher ups who'll force their sanitized regulations upon you as their art slave/wagecuck.

I had an easy time making art friends when I was in middle school and drew sparkle dogs or whatever they are called. I stopped drawing after high school for at least seven years though.

Now that it's a hobby of mine again, I have no real idea on how to make art friends either. Other than my bestie who got me back into it.

I'd like to do art trades again.

/ic/ 'professionals' suffer from the art version of survivorship bias. It's easy to look at someone like Sakimichan and think that her art isn't *that* good so making 10k per month is attainable, completely overlooking the fact that success stories like her's are literally one-in-a-million. Having art as a hobby is fine, just don't ever expect me or anyone else to take anything you do or create seriously. If you only go half-way with your talent what makes you think I care about anything you have to say or produce? The true goal of creating art is to leave an impact on the world when you die. As long as ambition is your driving force, don't ever expect me or anyone else to take anything you do or create seriously. If you only ever have a sentiment that's attached to your prosperity/popularity what makes you think I care about anything you have to say or produce?
You don't even know where your own top is, let alone someone else's halfway point. And maybe someone's actual halfway point IS their top, for a number of reasons beyond motivation/ ambition.
You think you have the world of art distilled to a single narrow goal, and think you should/deserve to have an impact on the world yet you stand ready to throw out anyone who does art for the sentiment/appreciation/joy of it as self-servicing and not worthy of your time?
I'm all for /ic/ being a useful alternative, if it were ever sane, but why is everywhere else an asspat zone? Maybe because most people recognize pushing ambition on an artist at every turn is futile/absurd at best and counterproductive/ fatally flawed at worst. It's up to the artist to find the balance between strife and contentment, and I think most people realize this, and offer the only real, sensible thing they can in General- support.
