Yeah I relate to this feel. I like producing things, but I don't really care about "making it" or becoming a master of anything. I just draw things I think look cool sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I still want to improve, but I'm not planning on putting a huge amount of effort into it and making a career out of it

Its not that hobbyists arent real artists, its just that if im going to network or be your friend its because i hope that your gonna be trying to go places too. When you dont its just like a fun jerk off relationship but a waste of time. a lot of people dont really have any other option than to make it. so when someone comes in and is like "oh im here just for fun" its kinda like a slap in the face to the artists who take it seriously. not that i feel this way, i think most people come to art from a hobby, like a lot of things but i wouldnt disclose to people that your a hobbyist or professional. i think its should be used more descriptive than prescriptive.

I like this, I feel like a lot of 4chan artists are drawing for the sake of getting good but don’t have any other passion in art, which is what limits them. Like even if they did get good there would be no point because they wouldn’t have any ideas for using their newly obtained skills on- they would just keep doing light studies, and anatomy studies, and figure sketches, without any finished pieces because they have nothing that they’re actually interested in.

A relationship is as much the energy you get out as it is the energy you put in. If you've got goals and ambition then the healthiest thing to do is surround yourself with like minded people. Everyone's got friends they just fuck around with, but if those are the only people in your life then it'll be difficult to find people to push you towards a higher place. No one is owed your time.

It's okay, I mostly agree with where you coming from even if other anons won't. All friendships have abstract value that must be weighed, work related ones especially so. I find particularly dedicated hobbyists refreshing because they do good work for good reasons and talk about other things. It's the leeches in the profession trying to use you as social currency that you should avoid.

At the end of the day I want to be around like minded people that push me to work harder and succeed. I already have a bunch of friends to call up to play games or drink, but art is my passion and I take it very seriously. When I talk to unmotivated artists who don't work as hard as I do, it takes away some of my own enthusiasm as well and those conversations don't make me very happy.

I think everyone should do what is right for them to seek out happiness, but sometimes what you have to go against the established social norms. I think too often we gauge others on our own metrics of what it means to be happy and create well intentioned catastrophies. Other times we just want to find some differences in others that allows us to resent them and therefore ignore a new perspective of pursuing happiness that might make us question our own.

I ask myself, what brings me fulfillment? One of those things is art. Then I ask, am I fulfilled by my art? And I think no, if only that line was better, if only I knew more about that object, if only I drew more, and these thoughts keep me going. I want to improve myself, learn continuously, and draw a lot, but not every artist feels that way.

I just find it hard to relate to those artists.

Having a STEM career (like engineering and applied, not pure math/theoretical physics autism shit) as your main, means you can have an actual living income while being mentally healthy and doing art, your way and not the market demanded way, on the side. Most concept art is soulless generic garbage and you will end up working under some no-name company's vision instead of your own. I had an easy time making art friends when I was in middle school and drew sparkle dogs or whatever they are called. I stopped drawing after high school for at least seven years though.

Now that it's a hobby of mine again, I have no real idea on how to make art friends either. Other than my bestie who got me back into it.

I started with diatonic then built up to chromatic.
start with mastering playing single notes, then start learning chords and notes switching
after that it's scales, scales scales

It's easy to look at someone like Sakimichan and think that her art isn't *that* good so making 10k per month is attainable, completely overlooking the fact that success stories like her's are literally one-in-a-million. I'm much happier having a stable 9-to-5 with health insurance and vacation days, personally.

I'm all for /ic/ being a useful alternative, if it were ever sane, but why is everywhere else an asspat zone? Maybe because most people recognize pushing ambition on an artist at every turn is futile/absurd at best and counterproductive/ fatally flawed at worst. It's up to the artist to find the balance between strife and contentment, and I think most people realize this, and offer the only real, sensible thing they can in General- support.
