I sent an email to the guy who sold it to me because he didn't know this was a vintage painting, nor did he know the original painting: the source. Read his email back to me:

Hello,
Wow, I had no idea this painting was a copy of an earlier work. So sorry to disappoint you! I checked the tracking, & it looks like it should be delivered today. Have a look at it & let me know what you decide. Even if it's a reproduction, it's still very nicely done & quite old. Maybe once you see it, you will decide you still like it. Whoever the artist was, he must have greatly admired the Ingres painting, to attempt such an accurate copy. I just searched this image on ebay, & canvas prints of "La Source" sell for over $200. So in a sense, this is still a pretty good deal, considering this one is hand-painted & a legitimate antique. Whoever painted it was definitely a competent artist in their own right. Once you receive & inspect the painting, please let me know what you would like to do. I hope you don't think I was intentionally trying to deceive. I majored in art history in college but wasn't familiar with this painting, though I have heard of Ingres. Sorry for my lack of knowledge about this particular work.

Oh it's a mad house for art collectors. A true fucking mad house.
I've collected bullion. Easy? Sure, have money!
I've collected guns. Easy? Sure, have money!
I've collected gems. Easy? Eghh it's a little challenging to make sure that the stones aren't heated or glass filled, but it's possible if you look at each specimen with a telescope, so yes, it's ok.

But art collecting...art collecting you must know your pieces. You must know your provinence. You must know what detail to look for. You must be able to look at something and its price and know "is this even possible logically?" Hell, there is an art gallery that claims to have provinence on every piece they sell. Ranging from $1000 to $100,000 and even higher. However, do they truly know what they have is even real? Do you trust them to know what is real? Do you trust them to care enough about your best interest and not sell you a fake painting worth thousands?

Art buying/collecting is the most painful buying there is. It's almost gambling if you are paying for luxury art because you have to know your shit to even buy in the first place, lest you collect all this fake bullshit and you are left with a dwindling wallet.

This is why I am not ashamed to buy student art. If I know the student in real life, and they sell art, AND they make beautiful things. Guess what? I'm going to take a picture of them with the art piece that they personally sell me, and I am going to have them make me a certification. That way I am at peace knowing what I have may not be of wealth, but is at least unique.

I learned very well of this, I personally know that this piece isn't genuine in any way shape in form, but it's at least a -ok- version of the real thing.

Would you all just advice from now on to buy from my local gallery that sells shit for thousands but at least tells me the provinence? He has a family owned gallery that is 200 years old and claims everything he sells is incredibly genuine and original.

I'm just laughing my ass off here. It's got bare wood showing around the edges? It's not even a GOOD rip off. It's probably a canvas inkjet glued to a piece of wood, in a cheap frame.

I have never in my life seen a real oil painting with bare wood around the edges of the gesso - and perfect lines for the gesso. It makes no sense. Not even a student would do this. This HAS to be a canvas print glued to a board.

Plus, whoever framed this, just cut the board to fit a random frame. A real painting would be on a standard sized board, or the frame would be made to fit the painting properly.

Send this piece of trash back.

>> No.3785436

Dude. it's got bare wood showing around the edges of the print. It's framed incorrectly, even for a student piece or whatever the hell it is.

I bet it's not. Show us the actual paint strokes.

Even if it is, it's still trash. Bare wood around gesso? That thing is going to rot, and peel off. Bare exposed wood on painting is hilariously bad.

Better idea.

Go to Allposters.com.

Type in "Ingres" and "The Source".

Choose "24x32"

Choose "gold frame".

$211.82, shipped to your door, framed properly, and doesn't look like the absolute joke that hunk of crap you paid for.

Done.

Or, go to niceartgallery.com

Choose "Ingres" and "Source".

With a properly sized and fitted frame, AND handpainted, $376.

Your hunk of shit isn't even worth burning for the BTUs.

Worse, cut a shitty student paint off the stretcher or cardboard backer it was painted on, and glued it to a board that fit a frame that was laying around.

That wood around the edges is one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen.

Nobody, not even the most clueless student would tape off an area for gesso for a painting like that. And a decent art seller would have cut the exposed board off and found a frame that actually fit the painting.

Seriously, if this is a bait thread - well fucking done, for the humor value.

Yep. That's mold.

These pictures make it even more hilarious. The frame is rotted, and needs to be replaced - and doesn't fit the painting/print, whatever it is. The board doesn't even fit in the frame properly. Cheap hanging hardware, improperly done. Rotted plywood, with a nice big split up the middle.

No matter who put this together, it's hilariously bad. It has no value, even as student art. Someone took a frame, a hunk of plywood, and a print or student painting, threw them together poorly, with cheap finishing nails instead of properly fitting frame and glazing points or clamps, and is selling it to the biggest chump on ebay.

A professional art framer would literally laugh their ass off at this. An appraiser would tell you to get the fuck out of their office and stop wasting their time.

This isn't even a thrift store treasure, because it doesn't even look good. It's ugly. And literally rotting. It's trash from a garage, basement or attic thrown together and put up for sale on eBay.

And, the funniest part of it all, is the OP paid for it, and is trying to defend it.

Again, if this is a bait thread, well done.
