TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

Not being able to shade is the primary reason I’ve given up on drawing in the past. I get the concept behind it, but have a hard time implementing it in my own work.

I’m trying to work through Figure Drawinng with Loomis and he says it’s a hard jump that makes a lot of people quit.

Any advice for getting it down? Or books/videos that deal with this?

Who cares? Seriously digital tools are inherently shitty, try using a smartphone without interpolation on your inputs. The grit of your pen or pencil on paper acts as a stabilizer as well. It's literally no different from using a straghtedge for lines or an elipse guide. Use what feels the nicest. Personally I can't sketch or paint at all with stabilizer on but I won't ever ink with it off.

Legs are squished together vertically way too much make them longer especially the foot part. The other thing is he is not in balance he is falling over to the right a good rule of thumb is to place the feet on the ground under the shoulders but when drawing character with quadruped hind legs it can become very tricky because the leg is made of three major parts instead of two that humans have with the feet resting on the ground you need to try to have the three parts in balance in both length and size and keep the place where they touch the ground also balanced with the body's center mass. It also causes the pelvis to tilt forward and the back to arc more keep that in mind.

You could try making him have human legs or keep with the quad legs instead both works.

The light's direction is very unclear here and there is not visible difference between the main light and reflected light. The light and color shifts between the two characters is very apparent, the female one had very hard turn from yellow to purple the male has very little turn from skin to skin. Furthermore both characters are too light way more darker spots are needed, this is also quiet apparent compared to the background (I know it is unfinished but I must note that here as well.) There is no reflected light from the wall or from the ground, no ambient occlusion between the two characters either.

Anatomy could use corrections too but you requested feedback on the shading.

I spent an hour and a half yesterday sketching the basic shapes, then went a bit faster making his feathers. I still have the bottom right to do, but I am a bit exhausted now as it took a ton of patience and effort to get to this point. Hopefully that aspect of art gets easier as you improve. One curious thing is I felt like the feathers had ruined my sketch initially, but now that it's all together the wings look pretty okay.

Hey guys... here's my progress since last year. I started around may but then went full stop around october. I suffer from mild depression and have problem focusing at anything, my rough sketches and gestures are quite shitty. Currently, I can only draw bodies using references, can do somewhat decent faces, but I have to polish bodies for hours to get a mediocre result. I'm fucking bad at drawing hands and feel anxious whenever I have to draw them, so I leave them for last.

aside from working on the placement of the features, remember that a lot of the lines of the face aren't really lines at all. e.g. the seperation of the lip to the skin of the face isnt demarcated by a hard black line line you make with a pencil; it's a shift from a red shade to a lighter skintone shade. I'd start by making your general head shape then mark the general places where eyes/nose/mouth are and then move on to the hard dark lines, like the upper eyelids, eyebrows, line separating the lips, etc.

What >>3785695 said is true. the line artist likes to stylize and suggest some shape to the nose by adding the shade or the light there to give it more shape. However the problem is that the rest of the image doesn't obey that rule and the light seems to come fro mall over the place.

My quick attempt to show it a bit more detailed (at least how I guess it is) but yeah as soon as you start adding detail it gets into uncanny valley territory. Since this is animation so it needs to be clean and simple so styleization works way better and detail is way less important.

Torso in general is too short compared to the arms in my opinions the upper leg also seems too short. My main concern is that the legs just feel flat and small compared to the rest of the body.

Here is am idea. If you have got a full body mirror at home go and do the pose after the sketch and measure the relationship with the body and limbs. Always pay attention to the relationship between the torso and the limbs it can save you a lot of hassle.

Major props for all the massive details you made Anon, I remember your work from earlier. You clearly spend a great deal of care and effort with the details good job at that especially for using no digiutal materials. Again big props to that! I also really like that you are not afraid to tackle such a topic with more than one character and in the middle of more interesting poses.

I would advise you take a bit of time and and tone the details a bit, practice a bit of gesture and movement and foreshortening so that you could put more emphasis on the movement. It is not that your pic is bad but I feel you could already improve this by just switching up the poses. Most notably the character behind (not sure about the names I am not up to date on Dragon Ball) his pose feels a bit stiff and static even tough he just probably did some high speed doge or something.

The face of the front character is bit awkward, the mouth and teeth is too big for this angle and feels flat. The eyes also seem empty and unfocused towards the direction of the punch he is throwing I am not sure how much he is angry or anything or if he is just berserk or something but it doesn't seem to match with the action he is performing.

Here is my shitty attempt at it without changing it too much.

it's a very simple outline of a plane of the nose. Sometimes people who stylize art with linework (esp anime artists) will rather than shading, just add a thin outline on a section of whatever that would not be visible, but is there.

Someone below replied by shading it in, but that's not entirely accurate, because it's just meant to depict the plane, and not the value. If done well it can imply depth and complexity to an otherwise simple line drawing. Kill la kill is kind of a bad example. Their art is good but it's also somewhat inconsistent. Being able to do it (and in a way that reads properly) is difficult, and a sign of someone really understanding how to depict form with lines. This simplified head should give you an idea of what they're going for when they do that.

Practice practice practice, in my opinion you should start over. You're going into detail when the figure and distribution of positive/negative space are still incomplete. What you have so far (the face) isn't that bad imo and I believe with enough time you could refine them, but that won't help if the measurements of the figure itself are off in the first place.

Here's something I found on /ic/ a while back, hope it helps.

It depends. Sometimes it's good just to get what you feel like you need out of a drawing for practice. But it can be good to finish full works too so that you learn later stages of the process.

Also 'polishing a turd' is a terrible mindset. Your works are always going to have things that could've made them better no matter how good you get. If small mistakes make it so you can't finish a piece you'll never finish anything.

Sorry to hear so but bro, take it from me that drawing can help depression. Keep drawing and draw it out of you, even if just means scribbling random lines on the paper it helps. Draw, it doesn't matter what just keep drawing and drawing it helps.

Not sure if you are using pen, seems like pen which is great. No matter what is in your mind sadness, happiness, ambition, defeat whatever, draw it do not worry about quality or what you are drawing just draw whatever, draw it out of you. Okay? There is nothing childish about it and you don't have to feel bad about it you do it to help yourself. It will help trust me, when you are at your lowest point of depression/anxiety just draw it out of you whatever come into you mind, be it a monster or something horrific. Just draw it out even if it just random scribbly lines.

Keep drawing as much as you can, draw all of it out of you, no matter what it is!

You weren't finished.

Don't be afraid to leave questions where edges are. Defining where each individual object ends/touches another leaves the viewer with nothing to do. Also smooth objects like the pitcher wouldnt have hard shadow transitions, but it's good you're not afraid of them.

I realised halfway that I needed to give the figure more depth.
Fingers are derpy, I know, I have to practice drawing hands.
Her face looks a bit off. Too round? Needs a pointier chin? Too boyish?

Took me probably 2h 30m-3 hours. Most of the time was wasted with getting the arm right. By "absolute beginner" I mean it, it's the 4th drawing I've actually put effort into, after two decades of thinking you're either talented at drawing or you'll never be able to draw.
Overall it was enjoyable, feels good to be able put the dumb shit you come up with on paper, a poor rendition is better than no rendition at all.

References are Spike's "Bang" scene from Cowboy Bebop and Inazuma from Kancolle.

I don't want to be discouraging, but you should rethink why you're drawing in the first place. If you're only doing it because you think it'll be fun once you get good at it, you should consider another hobby maybe.

My entry for an ART1 class project. Thoughts?

>> No.3787347

>>3787317
Try to realize that what you draw today is just one step on a long journey and thus its quality is insignificant. So if it turns out shit, it turns out shit, it is just one from the many you will make.

We get hung up on the idea that the current art are we create defines us as an artist and maybe even a person. We identify with it too much as if looking into a mirror and then judge ourselves based on what we see in that mirror. This is nothing new this happens to everyone that is not yet confident in what they do be it art or any performance.

Try to put less emphasis that what you are doing today will be your "masterpiece" the sum total of all the knowledge and skill you have and thus demand that it will be as amazing as you see it in your head (which is impossible by the way) or "that other person's work." If you feel like that when doing art the it is time to take a short break and clear your head because you are focusing too much on a theoretical future result instead being in the present and focusing work you are doing. You need to clear your head and then you can get back to what you are doing.

Do not be afraid or ruining it, in fact developing the courage to completely ruin it or actually ruining a few of your works on purpose is an extremely liberating experience. You will need to acquire this anyway because every time you try something new like learning different coloring or rendering you will inevitably feel that you are ruining your picture because it doesn't seem to go the way you wanted. But if you stick to it the picture will take shape, I know this from experience.

Keep at it Anon!

As the other Anon said, read those 3 things (Drawing on the Right side of your Brain and Keys to Drawing.) Personally, I felt that Keys helped me not symbol draw as much. Also watch Proko's construction. The more you expand how to draw things closer to how you see it, you should notice how things react to light and darkness. Don't give up, beginning is the fun bit when you slowly go from dogshit to just shit.

gotta work on your values babycakes. look at your horseshoe and skull, the reference goes all the way from black to white it sone areas to really show the form, yours either don't go dark enough or light enough. Using the horseshoe alone, It's mostly that dingy pewter grey color throughout except for some sharp specular highlights that define the curve of the top rim as well as the little indent at the end and in a some small pits on the right hand side. Same with the skull, the whole front plane is nice and bright on the forehead as well as the rim of the eye socket as those are facing the light directly. its trick mixing these when you see the object as white or grey so it can help to start with your shadow shapes. Hope this helps

This is way too blue, one of the tricks with anime is to cast an entire grey blue screen (in screen mode) on the side of the body to make it look like atmospheric lighting without making it look like western shading. Of course you can do it the way you do it too but you have to be really careful with the edges or it will come out plasticky or glassy the way my art used to and the way this is basically threatening to.

>>3787382
Maybe move the shadow on the right thigh down somewhat and use a shade that isn't so grey for the shadow. Have a look at other people's art for shadow colour inspiration and in RL but in general a purple or blue ish tone will suffice for a convincing tone (of course I currently have f.lux on so it can be a bit bad). As for the ground shadow I believe most of them are modelling it first in 3d and then casting a shadow with the program if they don't already have an exact ref

Some starter tips:

Eyes are always in the middle of the head/face. All of your faces, if they were real people, would have under 1 inch of forehead. Dont worry about shading yet keep working on faces. Do not keep drawing faces facing forward, it will lock you into symbol drawing. Suck it up and loomis. The reason all your eyes look the same is because you are drawing a child's symbol of an eye, not an actual eye. Use references and study them. Never draw what you think something looks like, use your eyes and draw what you see.

I always get caught up on the idea of symbol drawing though, since I always see drawings and features like the eyes that are practically symbols but with eyelids and proper lashes
is it wrong to think of them as 'advanced' symbols in a way?

Brand new beginner, been drawing seriously for a few days. Please give honest feedback.

Reading "Drawing on the right side of the brain", supposed to do a self portrait. Got high and spent like 4 hours trying to draw myself. It was a very trippy experience, I recognized many things about myself I never saw before. Fucked up a lot but I think came out with a decent first attempt at portrait. The nose/eyes seem to be slightly off (3D plane mismatch almost) & some other minor things, but overall I'm proud of it when thinking of my skill level.

I'm not an expert on portraits, but maybe you should have used construction lines to properly map out where the details of the face were before jumping right in. Also, be sure that you aren't "symbol drawing", which basically means, don't draw symbols of what you think things are, draw them as they are. Take a look at the image in this post: >>3783924 for a better explanation.

Also, you have a lot of balls for just blatantly posting your own face on 4chan, which is pretty cool, I guess? It's good that you're drawing seriously. Just keep going every single day.

>> No.3789905

>>3789617
Thanks anon, really appreciate it. I am attempting to avoid symbol drawing, but still need some work. I did try to lay out construction lines before the details, but I struggled with the nuances of how to construct a head/face shape in 3D space. So many bones/pertruding shapes/skin doing weird stuff. I'm continuing to draw every day & take it seriously
