Yes I was being facetious. I wish Chase would show his process. I'd be curious to see his initial sketches and how much 3d/photo is used. I'm guessing he is using a lot of Zbrush, Octane/Keyshot, and photos, maybe also programs like Substance.

I kind of really like obvious photobash/3D for MTG cards, it really isn't jarring when it's on a small card and it kind of makes the card stand out more.

Brad Rigney's and Deharme's MTG cards are a great example of that.

you have to live with what you get in traditional. Digital you can fix it, you can zoom all the way in and do the tiniest little details, you can change the major details on a revision. That's great for work flow and clients, but it ends up looking manufactured rather than birthed.

>> No.3783944

>>3783843
>it ends up looking manufactured rather than birthed
So therefore less "human" and less appealing in a way? Would this mean that if you use certain crazy limitations for digital, or say try to replicate the ones in traiditonal painting or inking or whatever, you'd get a more interesting result?

I was also thinking that the fact you can render for hours more easily in digital would take people off the basic creative process itself sonner (less work in ideas themselves)

And another thing I just thought about is, in MtG at least, it seems that less flashy, comick-y. And probably less appealing to me cause I don't really vibrate for "semi-realistic" stuff usually.

>> No.3783967

>>3783944
If there is any value having a bad drawing you can't delete. sitting there mocking you. But with digital you get more at bats quicker.

MTG has that high fantasy painted art style that was around before anime took all they're jobs. It still sneaks into westerners attempts to draw wifus.

It's just progress and change of tech still if they are going to pay you a single sum then artists are just going to give that kind of effort >>3783061 how many hours did this take you think? artist are just going to try to get some work and then hope they can parlay that fame into selling their own work to whoever. Seriously, there are all of these designs but for what, exactly? No one reads the god damn books, no one knows the lore. Even if they did, how many "SUPER MAJESTIC MYTHIC EXTREMELY LARGE SUPER COOL" monsters can fill the same exact world? They all just start to blend together.

I read somewhere a bunch of artists are boycotting 2019 magic gp because they stopped getting free flights and meals, instead of being invited as guests theyre now vendors who must pay for their flight etc if theyre going to sell original arts (they charge 5g for some originals) for mtg. Hows that killing the market? how many of these artists are still doing trad where there's still is an original and how many of these do they have to sell? if you sold 10 at 5 grand that's about a fulltime wage at a decent job. What happens when you don sell 10. WOTC is just reducing cost they know artist will do the work anyway cause they want it for their portfolio and potential income without royalties the amount they are paying for a piece is low. Company that big can take your art and sell it in a hundred countries as soon as you have finished uploading the image.

its subjective. he over renders stuff now giving a softer look to his figures, but that doesn't make somebody worse.

I like his old stuff. it had a lot more gritty feel and roughness to it. do artists get worse when they make it? it's like they get comfy and stop trying.
