Post your current drawing here and give constructive critique to others. Don't take anything personal.

Please make sure your posted image is clear, downsized to around 1000 pixels wide, rotated to the correct orientation, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one.

Still adding graphite.
Experimented with the background but I think it’s too distracting.
Gonna even it out and then fix the teeth then try to figure out what to do with the shadow to the right of the book and do a little more to the book.

The placement of almost everything is off frankly.
This isn’t drawn from a photo. So with that being the case, I didn’t get the shapes quite right or their placement. I’m still playing with the values but have been sick so I can only do so much a day. I got a skull from amazon and put it in a shadow box. But I don’t think the jaw is too off.
But please give me your thoughts.

Can't redline it because I am trying to rush my own project but here is a quick thing that seemed off.
Basically I am not an anatomy expert but I think that the wisdom too th does not go that far back behind the mandible? Only at a certain angles when you are basically looking at it from almost completely the side, but when you are looking at it from 3/4th it should be almost completely visible. In addition to that all of the back teeth seem to be extremely tilted.
This all together creates a weird feeling like if you would but that skull upright he almost has an unnatural joker-like smile that is innate to his jaw structure as opposed to the very slight curve that skulls naturally have.
In addition to that I think the values on the jaw front plane can accentuate curve just a slightly bit more.
Take that with a grain of salt, otherwise the values look good everywhere especially on the brow ridge in my opinion.

>> No.3783607

>>3783591
Yeah the bottom wisdom tooth it definitely too far back. Good catch. I just turned on the lights in my shadow box and am taking another look. This is precisely what I’m looking for thanks. The front jaw plane is something I’ve gone over again and again. I had a lot more graphite on it but it upset the over all value structure so o dragged an eraser over the whole thing and this is what came out. I thought about leaving it but I may play a little more.
This Stonehenge paper gets destroyed easily so I may just leave it.
I will definitely leave it for last because if I go darker on the jaw front plane it seems I may have to go darker on everything, and I’m not sure I’m up to that.
We’ll see. Thanks man for checking me. This is the reason I am still coming here...free crits!

Honest opinion: they're both lazy. You can't just outline like that unless
>You're separating a complex figure from a complex background
>You're doing some sort of Butch Hartman cartoon
You should use line weight according to the volumes, e.g. have a thick line go under the arm in the foreground instead of stopping at the elbow, have thicker lines on the inside of the folds, etc.
I rarely see a case where using dead lines is better than tapering lines

I can agree to an extent. Line depth and weight is extremely important when a character is IN a space. In a room. A setting.
Simple pin-up's or busts don't really need to adhere to this. Or if the artist is going for a more eye catching "pop." If you want a fine example of an Eastern use of this sort of style, look to Panty and Stocking. The series itself varies a lot in it's visuals, so it may not be the best example.
It doesn't look like the artist intends to put this character's in a space outside of a void. At least at this time. I also like what they did, as it makes the images pop out a bit more. It also emphasizes the inside of the borders, highlighting those smaller details.

It all depends on the setting used and particular style of an artist. Line weight/depth can be incredibly useful, but also having no line weight/depth can also be done well. It's a simple style that I think anon did well.

Well I don't really have good understanding of tech it's more about shape and form design that remind you of machinery that important I think, but I have tech education though. These mecha type drawings I do in my sketchbook in spare time, so it's a lot of improvisation, then I refine it digitally. UV mapping is easy, toss that thing into blender and just mark seams.
Retopology is a bit harder but I remember the basics of it.
Basically every artist that doesn't study Zbrush is a dum-dum because it's only a plus. Have you ever wanted an easy way to model 3d shit? Now you can! And the best part is that all of your artistic skills translate perfectly, including how you block by going from big to small etc.

A good exercise that you can do easily is to load up some random 3d object or look up 3d mesh pictures and try to emulate how the 3d mesh bends around the form, but with cross hatching.
So the way you try to do it is that you hatch along the imagines wireframe of the model, and you hatch thicker or lighter depending on how strong or weak the shadow is.

Obviously you could have taken more time with it. Oils as I’m sure you found, take time to do if u do them in layers.
It’s drawn pretty well. The book is your strongest object. A real sense of depth due to your values. Bravo on that. But the strength of the book is diminished by the sloppiness of the edge of the pages.
The fabric looks pretty good.
Overall you would have done better with thinner applications of paint with each brush stroke. Texture in this type of painting benefits when it imitates a part of the object being painted.
In this instance the texture isn’t emphasizing the objects but is serving to distracting from them.
But your shadow shape of the book is excellent. The flatness of the paint of the open page is good and the “words” are done pretty well.
Overall for your first time thumbs up.
And anything drawn from life ALWAYS trumps a photo reference.

I am really bad at composition especially for scenes like this. I am generally bad in a lot of fundamentals but I get by because I do a lot of work I guess and there aren't that many good local artists.
I was contacted by a studio who wanted a sketch to see what I could do for them. Sadly the deadline was yesterday so there isn't much point in tweaking this further.
But if you can give me any books or tutorials on composition or how this scene could be better, I would be grateful.
Pic related is a piece I started like 10 days ago and want to finish asap. I don't know if this is a right approach but if I feel like I fucked up on composition or something I feel like it's better to finish a piece and get better for the next piece than endlessly tweak it until it's "perfect".

I sort of like it, I am a bit bothered by the empty space on her face though, on the left side where the light hits.
I think one strand of hair can fix that.
Just flip the canvas all the time, pic related, you can see how perspective on her face is a bit fucked.

The composition is a little strange, try moving the yellow bg down until it reaches her thighs, so as to connect the silhouette and make the shape more cohesive.
You could also use more bulky curves on her right shoulder, she's flexing it to keep those arms in the air, no?
The rendering looks fine.

My critique on this pic is that the central figure needs to be bluer to seem more far away, same with the hills in the distance. The colors look a BIT muddy. I would suggest sticking to a limited palette - the red in the hillside is distracting. The yellowish areas I understand more or less because when grass looks dead or has yellow flowers it can look yellowish but the red and saturated bluer areas of the hillside its just distracting. tone it down, make the focal points of this piece clear and striking-- the central floating figure and the person with the yellow coat. A part of achieving that would be toning down your palette for the background to get rid of arguably unnecessary distraction. keep painting-- the sky looks nice btw.

The composition is fucked but as I said in the thread I think it's better to finish a piece and start next piece with the lessons you learned instead of sticking with one piece for too long unless that piece actually matters to you.

Thick lines are a cope anon. What I recommend is making a layer on top where you do a full pen-style linework of your piece in a very bright color, probs red or blue, reduce the opacity of that layer and then do lineless painting underneath it. After you've got the major bits blocked in you can turn off the line layer and voila, you're painting without lines.

Can you read?
>Learn how to paint everything you would want to paint and then use tools to speed up the process
Once you have actually mastered the form and once you actually know how to paint you can start using clipping masks and other tools to achieve your desired effect, but
>>3787954
>and so is using a ruler
Is unironically true. If you can not draw straight lines without a ruler you should probably practice more because this will for ever limit you, even though using a ruler as a tool in itself isn't bad.
Do whatever the fuck you want really, I'm just saying that art of Samurai jack for example has amazing edge control, silhouettes are always clear because of stellar interplay of dark and light. In your painting, even though it is nice, there is loss of form between the foreground and background in some areas.
I am saying that art crew of Samurai Jack could draw what they draw probably in any medium.

>> No.3787983

they used tape and stencils. which is essentially what clip masking is, but digital medium.

the shoulder is broken, and it is sort of hanging in the air, rendering on the right breast is confusing and ruins the shape of it, making it seem like a baloon even though the lines themselves indicate more weight
hands are just lazy desu, I don't know maybe she is supposed to hold something? that's why they are so flat?
her leg to the left is also busted, move it deeper into perspective and then further a bit to the left
The face and the other leg look nice

The reason why I am personally against jumping on to tools like this is because often times our skills are not developed enough to create good art even without them, let alone to utilize the tool as a proper aid that it is meant to be.
My main point is that despite the fact that this looks cool
>>3787927
it could have been a lot better if the artist would focus a bit more on the importance of values to convey a silhouette when making environmental art

So,
I set up the perspective grid on this...
Now how did it get all fucked up?

Its an octagonal shaped room, did I mess something up for this reason?

I would imagine there being a fireplace on each of the 8 sides, but when I placed the two on the sides they look weird.

>> No.3788004

okay fair point. well once you learn fundies, the world is yours, there are no rules, only results.

>> No.3788010

>>3788003
Think about it logically dude. An octagon has to have a sum of 1080 degrees. I assume you want all the angles to be equal, otherwise the room would look wonky.
If I am understanding it correctly basically either the fireplace behind is the corner or it is the side. If it is a corner than it is a 90 degree corner and that can not make an equilateral octagon. If it is a side then it is clearly shorter than the sides to the left and right.
think of how this room would look from top.

Additionally your fireplaces aren't even centered, both of the side fireplaces seem to be skewed closer to the corners close to the bottom of the painting as opposed to the fireplace in the back which is dead center. The bookcases also don't make much sense, I assume that the corners are right out of the field of view, but I think that would make the parts of the bookcases closer to us shorter than the ones we already see.

Th female comment was not a criticism.
It’s a lovely drawing but could be enhanced a little by diving into your values a little more, but be conservative.
Still keep the overall softness but maybe in a few places vary your line and edge hardness in order to accentuate the softness of this lovely female.
Right now there is an overall softness that kinda denies this drawing from having any part of it impressing itself on the viewer.
You could keep it as it is and not much would be lost.
But, I think, if you do go at it with a mindset towards emphasis, go slowly.
Maybe put the pic in a sketch program and play a little as to not alter the drawing.
But when you go the the actual drawing, go slow. You got time. No reason to destroy this lovely drawing.
P.s. I was drunk when I posted my first 3 comments. There was no offense meant.
Sometimes I get cocky and have to slap myself.

But anyway, I do really like this.
And mega bonus points for the trad.
And I cannot wait to see the completed piece.

>> No.3790492

>>3790223

Thank you for all your advice. I very much appreciate it. I think I agree she needs darker values. I get nervous getting too dark, but you're right she suffers from the value range not making anything very prominant. I also think I agree about the hand being more slender. I'll try your suggestion about scanning and altering it a bit before committing to changes. Thanks for the Idea.

I'm kind of new to drawing. I'm self taught, but I love to draw. I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you again.

Also I wasn't offended. I was more amused. I get confused for a girl a lot at work. So no offense taken. :)

I like the overall mood of it. I like the composition, but I think you should try to push and develope your character's clothes a bit more. They just seem to bleed into the background. I'm not saying that's a bad effect everywhere, but some places need to be defined to draw focus. Either way good job.
