Which iPad you using? I'd try looking at it on a mid tone canvas to see if it looks any different, maybe play with the contrast. If higher contrast makes it look better then you probably need to push your values.

What are you talking about though. OP is asking why they're "plateauing" at drawing boring faces on an ipad. If they want to "progress" they should switch to a medium that doesn't have edit+undo. They should switch to something with stakes that requires a greater level of forethought and execution than is required to make a generic suspect photo on a tablet.

making something look good is not a fundamental. thats why its hard to make something have appeal because there is no material out there that talks about the aesthetics of not just the drawing, but your tools. one good example is brush(stroke) economy. most resources you will fine will give examples of big brush strokes that imply detail, but its not limited to that. brush economy goes as far as a micro rather than macro and thats what hyperealistic painters take advantage of. they dont just mindlessly add these details, they have to think about the surrounding paint and make judgements, a lot of which you judge on prior experimentation.

this is also why ruan jia makes good paintings, among many others they can combine both of these macro and micro levels of stroke economy depending on the zoom. depending on the distance and brush strength(opacity or flow) you can see how well it blends on that distance, which is why in some high resolution paintings they will appear unrefined because of how loose they are, until you zoom out and see the implied detail that stroke economy gives.

The depth here is alright you probably need a few hours off it to see it fresh. However, to progress from here you should practice more on the representation of 3d objects in 2d space and push for more extreme stuff like crazy angles that would really test your ability.

You know how many goddamn expressions there are? How many expressions are you good at drawing that aren't "corpse affect?"

Like draw someone smelling something weird. Draw someone reacting to something awkward. Create prompts or context for emotions or reaction faces, then spend some time researching references for the expression, look at the anatomy of the face muscles and think about how they would be flexing when making the face. Etc. You're only scratching the surface of drawing goddamn faces.

I'll tell you exactly, cuz I went through this exact same stage. Stop worrying about rendering altogether. Focus on lines. You want to get your drawings looking great with just linework. Look at pic related - this is what you're aiming for.

The truth about rendering is that it's basically a waste of time until you're good enough at drawing that you're drawings look good even without rendering. At that point, rendering is easy and unnecessary - you barely even have to practice it, and only enough so that you can control your medium. When you practice rendering itself, you spin in circles aimlessly because you're trying to build a beautiful house on a bad frame.
