Post your current drawing here and give constructive critique to others! don't take anything personal!

Please make sure your posted image is clear, downsized to around 1000 pixels wide, rotated to the correct orientation, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one.

I drew this to impress my hot cousin while she sat next to me watching, it took about half an hour. I get the feeling drawing a pre-existing character lets me punch above my weight even if I got the costume design a little wrong and the values are all over the place. It was fun.

dont know whats up with the other thread, but oke

so there is a story behind this drawing;
>went to gf in a different town
>biked to the biggest train station in amsterdam
>bag with ipad, laptop, school stuff and drawing for my aplication at an art school
>locked bike and took train, but notice i dont have my bag anymore
>have crazy panic attack
>get out of train and take train back to amsterdam, takes about half hour
>run to bike where i think i left it, its not there
>really sad, go to lost & found
>this couple arrives just when i do
>thye have my bag
>let them know its mine, they give it back
>ready to scuk their dicks at this point, so thankful
>promise them a drawing

this is the process so far, really wanna do good on this one. any feedback?

Just plain Photoshop honestly. I have premade one by making vertical and horizontal lines, duplicating the layer, turn that layer by 45°, merge, duplicate, turn again and so on until you have many outgoing lines from a focal point. Then when using that in an image put the first grid onto the canvas, position it and then duplicate and move the second one along the horizon line by pressing shift and dragging it to the side. Voila'.
I would post my template but it's too big for 4chan

This is absolute trash and I know it, but I have to finish it otherwise it will have defeated me. Made me realize how much I'm crippling myself and all the mistakes i make, so I'm starting up a dynamic sketching course.

The whole thing would be a lot easier to do digitally, what fucks me up most IMO is getting consistent value and depth to each plane or surface of an object. I can envision the trunk twisting and bulging while drawing but can't describe it with my pen, which would be simple to do digitally

You should have a better foundation (=loomis)
Draw the structure before. Also, get down big flat colors and start building above your values, now it's a muddy mess.
Then last thing is edge control, you should have sharp edges to define the forms.

Not trash at all. Not a finished piece for framing, but not everything has to be.

>tfw ballpoint poorfag

Definitely get something better. Or just use pencil. Even a cheap pencil is better than ball point. It's hard to have expressive lines with a ball point, and I think a variance of line weight would help on a piece like this.

>tfw that squished right side against the edge of the paper

Framing is something we all learn, and you just need to plan out the drawing ahead of time. What a lot of teachers do is make you establish a faint border all around the page, yes, using rulers, it's fine, and then planning out in that space where your objects will be. It's just basic composition, and the more you do it, the better it will get.
>tfw can't fucking draw trees
Yet. This one isn't bad. Keep going. Trees have an internal logic to them, each species grows certain ways, which helps you capture the essence of it. This kind of tree, get lots of pictures of oaks, things like that.

You're being way too hard on yourself. This is a pretty damned good attempt. Stop focusing on the whole 'finishing" thing. Sometimes it's better to just move on. Maybe come back later. Learning when 'it's good enough" is hard starting out, especially with sketches. And, if this is for a painting later on, it would be pretty normal to do several drawings like this to prepare for the final, working out the issues beforehand.

Not every drawing is going to be perfect. Every artist produces way more failures than finished, especially in the beginning. Relax. You're getting there.

ok so I'm working on this doingus. In terms of what I'm trying to execute, on script it would be something like:

>Girl, keeping rifle trained on GIANT DOG, carefully offers some of her food.

Question is should she be using her right hand, on our left, to offer the food, or her left hand? Right hand seems more natural, with her left hand down by her hip an the trigger, and potentially the gun is being propped by her knees.

But if I do the opposite, she'd have her right hand down on the right of the knees keeping the gun trained, but wouldn't have a finger on the trigger.

Also where the fuck can you easily find stock footage of people holding rifles in weird ways from different angles?

You need to put in much more effort into exactly copying the heads out and refining the rendering. /beg/ is always home to a differing array of people some of whom are better than you (and there's some people on /beg/ who are better than the people on the draw thread). Make sure that your proportions are right, measure it if that's required, resize down to a thumbnail and compare with your reference, flip both it and the reference and compare again and liquify in photoshop if necessary to fix proportions and rotate/flip the canvas if you have difficulty spotting the diffs between your painting and the ref. When that's done, repost the images.

I would say you're still learning, but I wouldn't hold yourself down with /beg/ thinking. You're starting to formulate shadows and depth without drawing hard lines, and that's good! Just keep it up, push yourself, and eventually you'll make things for friends. That's how I started drawing.

I will admit, I'm not really sure what's going on here, but I like it. Perhaps the sketchy lines represent the psychopathy involved.

And this is my doodle right now. I'm trying to figure out how to draw auburn (read: greyscale) hair in a way that doesn't look autistic. I got some demon girl I'm doodling too.

>I kinda like this, but the face is a little butter
yeah that's pretty standard for the coarse for me with all this scratchman mechanical pencil drawing/no erasing drawing. I'd actually kinda say that compared to a lot of the time when I just keep stacking lines on top until I generally get a workable shape, I've kinda still left a lot of room to fuck up the face going forward.
>I will admit, I'm not really sure what's going on here, but I like it.
Thanks bud. Started as just a drawing of a generic lady face where the goal was to try and do a "Kubrick stare" where the head is slightly tilted down and the person is looking up into the camera. Then I added the mirror and background to tie it into a story idea that I have called "Oblivion" about a Russian girl on a summer work visa who gets sucked into a world of sex slavery, prostitution, and violence. It's kinda like Taxi Driver/Mean Streets meets Drive. Kinda written around the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtH68PJIQLE

>Perhaps the sketchy lines represent the psychopathy involved.
That's my argument for why chickenscratching and spastic hatching can be a workable novel aesthetic. If the point is to create an aesthetic atmosphere that accentuates the feelings of anxiety and uncertainty and unfamiliarity with the situation they find themselves involved in, I think that scratches and sketchy lines could be a good way to accentuate that and create a sense of discomfort and frustration or whatever.

you don't need to respond with an essay. I like the idea and I like think you're doing an interesting job of illustrating story action in competent-enough ways. Without any context >>3775736 is a pretty compelling image. Like the hand sucks and whatever she's holding is nondescript, but I get that it's a character looking at something threatening, making a peace offering with their finger on still on the trigger. I'd say the face should be more stressed or the mouth could be better, but it's not a bad start.

I suspect you also drew the other drawings nearby. I suggest you try rubbing in the scritching to help with shading. There's something about rubbing in the grit that makes the image feel less... 2D, I suppose. That, and more shading work to help it pop.

The left boob overlapping the arm isn't right. To get it into anything resembling that position would be extremely painful. The values for the background are also too strong and it's distracting from the lady. Same with the values for the mountains - they're basically exactly the same as the hill in the foreground.

>> No.3779791

>>3779763
Have to disagree, I referenced it from my gf live and it was accurate, at least before I put on the cloth bra thing and coloured it. I'm going to sleep but I'll check it tomorrow again.
As for the BG values, yeah they are too strong but desserts also behave weird and I'm confused by them. When I look at any dune references they seem to have extremely similar values to the point where it looks almost 2d irl but with very subtle shift. I can't get that right so it looks just flat. Do you think that maybe I just need to connect foreground to bg with some sort of a path leading back? Obviously I need to add atmospheric effects and decrease values in bg, but I think it also might be the visual disconnect.

I think it's because people decide what pose they want and make it using 3d models. I have no other explanation how some people manage to get people in crazy poses with crazy lighting, with the the shading and the fabric being flawelessly rendered as well as the environment being lit perfectly and all this while being realistic.

try to make sure your proportions are right before you start doing shadows and such. your face and stuff is all too wide. this is probably a big problem as to why it doesn't look better. but keep at it though you will get it.
try and go with the flow of the forms as well with the hatching.

Thanks mates! I'm ExitMothership on most of my soocial media. Mostly on dA or insta.
Honestly I learned a lot on /ic/, and Scott Robertsons books especially. Worked a bit through How To Draw and How to Render and also did environment studies. Can be fun if you take two environments references and try to combine their traits in one image. I'm also a sucker for backgrounds in animation movies because they have a lot of valuable information. I think when watching Ghibli or Studio4°C movies I always miss half of the plot because I focus on everything else but the characters. I think you just gotta love scenery. Still, I should brush up on perspective, composition etc again and do more studies but I'm also on a personal project that takes all the energy leftover from freelancing.

I just looked through your gallery and I definitely remember seeing your draws and paintings around before especially the bird one. One question, I was wondering if used 3d in your drawings and if so what program/renderer did you use (and did you find it easy to pick up?)

I've used 3D a lot more before but I really try to get everything down by hand now with simply sketching. It can help though und you shouldn't be afraid to use it. I mainly use SketchUp which I found super-easy to get into. Sometimes I also render basic scenes for light reference which is mostly through DAZ Studio, and I use Blender to convert DAE files from SketchUp to OBJ for usage in DAZ Studio. The latter was a bit harder to get into but it has some tutorials in the program that you can follow which gives you a better idea.

i just wanted to draw a girl standing there since i've done a few other poses in the past and just wanted something simple, and I see artists do it all the time that are good but when I do it it just looks boring as fuck.

Thanks for the comment!

Looking at it today - all sorts of stuff jumps out. Mainly the way the people are holding the barrels - it looked super odd. Turns out it's much more natural to have them holding a grip underneath the front part of the gun. Some reference photos showed a grip like that, so I figured that's what they should be holding onto.

Have a story or reason she's standing there, even if it's off screen. And exaggerate the pose to suit the narrative.

Think about what they do throughout their day. Stretch in the morning, pick something up, look over their shoulder to see something, reach to a shelf for smth etc. Once you settle for a basic idea, more ideas will sparkle - what are they looking at, what are they picking up, how are they feeling about it...

And watch out for the feet, it always sucks balls when the character isn't planted on the ground.

There's not much weight in her hips. The weight bearing leg always puts a lot of force against the pelvis, which squishes soft flesh and creates horizontal wrinkles.

Inspired by Neuschwanstein, huh? It's a pretty big task you have set for yourself, but go for it! I don't want to ruin your fun though, so if you just want to go in and start painting, stop reading here.

First thing that jumps to my eye are perspective and scale. I did the perspective lines in pink, and you can see that your horizon line should either be much higher up, or that you should tweak the foreground. Scale is also a big issue. The thing i did in green is called "transferring scale in single point perspective" if you want to look it up. As you can see, if the lady in front were to walk over to the castle, she would almost be as tall as one of the smaller halls. This applies to the huts on the right too, i just din't put in in. Maybe do some smaller drawings to see how perspective and the position of the horizon line changes size relationships.

Composition is looking pretty good, but think about which details you want to put in and leave out. If everything is detailed evenly, the eye gets confused.

Don't scrap it anon, I like the style and character, but I'd suggest you either do complete side-view, or make her look at the camera, and emote something. And yeah, the face is the worst part, try and decide on a face angle, and then google the closest one to it, and use it as a reference.

Drawing from zoomed out thumb and then slowly zooming in and detailing more
What I feel like is that some stuff is slowly floating off and away if you know what I mean, like construction is floaty but I am pulling the structure out of paint anyway?
Working from thumbnail is weird but it sort of works.
I have a question though, is it a good idea to do a line sketch on top to fix anatomy and stuff at this point? Or do I jut need to slowly keep going and fixing as I go?
