IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread >>3768859

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

This draw was made with a reference.

At the moment I'm entirely focused on drawing the head and the neck, until I am entirely familiar with the shapes and anatomy of both and THEN I'll practice the features of the face and go down to eventually draw the entire body. In short, I thought in focusing on a part of the body until I could draw it from any angle and then move forward. Is there any other more effective way to improve?

Grinding one thing for extended period of time is not the best way to go. Pick something up to go with it, like gesture drawing. Draw couple of heads in 3D (very good practice by the way) and then do couple of gesture drawings (find the line of action and general proportion of a croquis model). The practices will complement each other and you are not headbutting (no pun intended) to a brick wall.

The drawing is nice however messy. Gesture drawing will help you with that also (no chicken scratching, think about your lines before you draw them). It will carry over to your portraiture soon after. If later on you start learning the planes of the faces you will get really good at portraiture, I can tell.

>>3772607
You have captured gesture really well, there is a feel of movement in the picture. Try to think in sense of warms and cools, and do value studies. It's a big subject to tackle on but check out the live illustration stream of Nathan Fowkes, he is master of color (next to James Gurney).

you could use loomis.

The skull is a ball with a jaw on it. it concaves at the eye region. Then there's a bunch of sinus cavities in the face and and stuff.

Draw a skull for practice. Then draw a face on top of the skull for practice.

There are overall proportional mistakes in the picture, mainly the torso being too low /the halfway point of the entire body not being on the crotch. Watch the Proko video on pelvis, the placement of the pelvis is really something that helped me to attach legs to the body.

After watching the video or two about pelvis, open up few reference images of models, and redline / draw the pelvis on top of these images. Try to place the simplified "bucket" of pelvis on top of the models confidently and your understanding of mid section and attachment of legs will improve.

Whooa Man
Jesus Christ.
Your really gotta check the angles on your lines.
That curve around her ribcage is WAY too sharp.
The reason you're perceiving it as being that sharp is because of the way the light plays off her torso, but the ACTUAL torso isn't that sharp.

Lets also talk about shading here.

When you look at her right breast, you can clearly see an hourglass shaped shadow coming down from the torso, getting smallest at the nipple, and expanding out again.
If you want to shade, be sure to shade EVERYTHING

In fact, when you're first doing shadows, don't even bother trying to understand what you're looking at, just work on being able to identify sections of dark and light

Here, I drew a ref for you

Actually your not to far off. If you look closely in your drawing: the bottom half of the body is larger than the upper half. If you break reference image in to it should help you see.

Breaking down imagines to simple shapes is a great way to understand volume.

Interestingly enough you in making the bottom larger you exaggerated the pose adding a little life to your drawing.

At its core, symbol drawing is deciding "oh, this is how I draw THING, so I'm always gonna draw it like that," when in actuality it can look wildly different depending on angle/expression/whatever else. You'll notice it's usually associated with eyes, and people who do it often make their subjects face straight towards the camera. That said, none of the people you linked did it that badly.

Dude, if you are going to do the 2 point lighting with a rim light from behind then do it shinier and put it on everywhere on the body, its point is to highlight the form in contrast against the darker background so might as well commit to it.

You shadows are only saturated but not darker, if you add more darker colors to it it will look better. I know the first time you add dark color to it it feels like you are ruining it but keep your optimism up it will look better.

Pick the direction of the main light and adjust your highlights spots to align to it, tits, nose shoulders biceps, eyeballs, highlight hair etc should roughly align towards it,it gives the picture a uniform feel.

Here is how I would change, I will post a second one to show it with arrows.

Currently I feel like I've been drawing for months without improving and I blame it on my lack of real practice and just doing wharever I wanted. Yes but draw 3d boxes not just 2 squares, you know "cubes" as they are called. Drawing large (think A3 paper site)accurate drawings of cubes from different angles free-handed is something that is practiced a lot in art schools. It is actually pretty damn hard. But will help you to train your perception of 3D form and it will be greatly helpful when you try to place 3d objects in space which is one of the hardest thing to learn in 2D art.

The wings need to serves as a compositional element Anon. Think about them like that. They are there to draw the viewer's attention to the center of the image where there character is. Same goes to the line of the rock he is standing on. It is good so far the only part that is instantly now centralized is the edge of the rock which seems to trail off to the left side of the character.

Some minor adjustments to pull the attention to him even more, you do not have to follow this I just randomly made this up about the wings to have them come from out of the back but still point towards him. The key thing is have the wings put him into the center of attention.

Also changed the rock a bit to point towards him and added a tail to also help with setting the character as the focal point.

I adjusted the shading somewhat to add more shadows on him but I think it is mostly alright.

The composition of this one is brilliant. There are so many ways that the artist draws your attention to the center Starting by making the top deliberately light and then fade it down to dark as you move downwards only leaving Sanguinius still lit up. On Sanguinius, beside the obvious wings the artist is using both colors light and dark values using the white cape white purity seals contrasting to the crimson armor. Not accidentally using almost the same colors that the wings had for uniformity. Then how he is the only light in the darkness of the Chaos hordes around him pointing fingers, guns etc at him or just looking towards him. Even the Silhouette of the Chaos hordes form a "U" shape that matches the wings but deliberately stops at the stairs. This is because after pulling the attention from top to down the artists also brings the attention of picture to a clear stop at the feet using those vertical stairs he is standing on. Finally he puts the halo glow around his head to clearly show the focus point of the image but also puts a few decorations on the armor around it to keep the attention there. Notice hoe the details of the armor are mostly covered in shadow at the arms and legs but not the heraldry icon on the shoulder pad.

Most of these are deliberate and I would gets meticulously planned composition to make an imposing picture. The only part that breaks the symmetry is the Khorne daemon with the glowing runesword at the bottom left which seems to pop out for no specific reason but to break the symmetry.

There is probably more that I probably am not seeing but I hope this gave you enough insight about it to improve your pic.

Try and hunt down the process shots for how other artists do it, but usually it's like this:http://erebun.tumblr.com/post/71516451565
The fact that they're seperating everything like an autistic fuck on top of thin lines is how they get the lineart so clean.

1) Sketch from imagination or reference <- this is where you may use loomis however Loomis is for drawing torsos and hands, anime heads it can be better just to rotate someone else's 3D head in sketchfab or to find a reference in the exact pose you want.
2) Draw over sketch to make the lines as thin as fuck using long strokes in SAI. You can use a reference for the sketch too so you know what lineweight to use. For example, google krenz sketch and you'll find a collection of very nice looking sketches then you just figure out what lineweight you use by copying his lines.
3) fill in the base that is your skin is getting a base and each section with a general different colour is in base so in your image it's the hair, the eyes, the face and the jumper the pants and the legs getting a base

In this image of lucina for example the face, the hair, the clothes (and maybe the section of the clothes that are goldish are also seperated), the gloves, the weird shit like belts and stuff get seperated.

4) Now figure out how to use clipping layers, any tutorial will do even this one: https://www.deviantart.com/kuro-mai/art/Anime-Style-colouring-Tutorial-151607592
5) They then figure out where the shadows go AND/OR lighting which is quite difficult but with a lot of practice and finding a good shadow reference you will know how to do it. If you want a nice gradation like in the lucina image you will probably be using a hard round brush and other some blurring or a soft brush to carve in the shape nicely.
6) After the shadows and shading is applied, this lucina image likely using a gradient set to overlay mode to make it appear to change colours.

First time doing something so explicitly sexual. Cross referenced a pig, some anime and a real person.

I'd say the hands could be better, I fucked up the composition and winged it with the hair because I had to have a way to cover the ears. That's why the hair is defying common sense. I might just draw an ear and have her hair curl behind it. Anyways. Feedback please. I'm going to bed but I intend to go into shading and detailing tomorrow.

Hi again, Anon here that drew for you last time.

Looking good I would say, the comic pages appear interesting as a start to a scene.

When doing dialogue it is important to keep in mind who is currently listening and who is talking or how much the two are connecting. And draw them to echo their state of mind. For example at this point from the Acri seems to be disconnected and weirded out with the fast food. So the shot shows her turned away from her partner this is good at panel 4 , it shows that the onlooker is just looking at her and showing his own thoughts only. But panel 6 shows her opening up and turning more towards him/her by asking him a question (I think). If their conversation become more lively and open you could consider turning the shot of Acri to face her partner and show her from the other side. This is especially good if she takes the active role in the conversation.

The cover is alright so far considering place hier hands somewhere the lower parts feels kind of empty maybe put her open palms there?

Hey, thanks a lot for the help. As for inking and coloring, I think I want to achieve something similar to these images I've stitched together. Something with a thick outline, maybe it occasionally changes color or thickness like the ones on the right. Most of my attempts making something like that come out as bland and flat; beginner material. I'm gonna post another image anchored to this post which is an example of a finished drawing I've made, showing off what I want my comic to sort of look like.

Ignore this mong. Clearly you're struggling with accuracy yes? If so do things that will help with accuracy, quick sketches are a fun and effective way of doing that, Personally i like to use construction but there are many ways, observe.

https://youtu.be/zzdD9iyIIxg

As a beginner there are three things you need to get a handle on, Value and Shape, which work together to create form. These three work together to create an illusion of depth in a drawing or painting, With line art you cut out value so you have to use shape and line weight (Which is effectivly value for lines) to create form
Practice them in any way that makes the most sense to you but the point still stands, if your shapes are bad and you know it and dont like it, do exercises that help increased the accuracy of your shapes. Bargue plates help but If ind them boring and copying from a photo reference with careful measuring is just as good.

Hope that helps.

Duude. Its not that bad.
In fact, you've done absolutely nothing wrong up until this point
the only issue is that your darks aren't dark enough, and your lights aren't light enough.

I can see you've made some cursory attempts at lighting, but try making the lightest part about 3x brighter than it is in your current sketch, and the same goes for the dark.

I promise you, when you start adding those slight gradations in color, its going to start REALLY popping

The coloring on the madragoras look totally fine, simplistic solid cell shading but it works and it doesn't seem to take a lot of work which is something you will need to keep tabs on when making a comic. Stick with this and keep it like this for awhile until you have got some mileage alright? As long as it works, it is fine it meshes well with the cartoony style.

One thing I noticed is that the shadow of the colors are moved downwards hon the color spectrum to darker, this is fine but you could consider adding more saturation of color to the shadows that makes them livelier. You don't have to but it ca help. Also consider using a few highlight spots on other parts of the reflective surfaces of the body. Since you are already doing it on the eyelids. But use them sparingly you do not have to do anything I say.(Also ignore the black bg that is because I suck at copy pasting transparency)

If you haven't seen this video yet, this is a quick and very informative video on color basics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj1FK8n7WgY

But even after all that keep the coloring consistent as you have done it on the mandragoras for awhile you will have a lot of time to improve between comic chapters. Comics need consistency and it is better if you get comfortable with it your current method before trying new things or moving on more complex things..

Elysia, I don't find her that convincing yet looks like a cat or a bat really but just my opinion. Maybe experiment with a few more shapes and colors.

Don't stop, keep working at it, the more traction you gain the better you will be able to focus and less you will procrastinate.

Not them but that’s a bit better.

Boobs do not begin anywhere near the collarbones, women still have pecs just like men, with the boobs sitting on top of them. They attach near the armpits.

It looks better. Remember she's shrugging her closer shoulder a bit. The top of the shoulder will raise quite far above the origin of the clavicles which already must be a bit above the insertions of the breasts.

Did some changes, hope I didn't fuck it up. Don't mind the flip I did.

1. More defined cheek (accidentally placed the mouth higher than you meant it to be probably) and also moved the chin back a bit on the local y axis toward the back of the head. Be really careful with the chin, its base is not supposed to go as far forward as the base of the nose. I used to not understand this
2. Rotated the closer eye a bit. I just thought it was too tilted.
3. Moved down tits origin as first mentioned.
4. Somewhere around here is where the origin of the clavicles is occluded behind the shoulder
5. Removed your elbow joint crease but put an x on it like a retard. In hindsight I don't know if it was really necessary, don't mind it too much, better look at a ref with the arm in the same position and see what really happens.
6. Cut away a bit of her torso and made it shorter. Not sure if I made it ever so slightly too short but yours was a bit long imo

If you're gonna take things from my version just use it as a general pointer, maybe somebody will make a real redline

It has to do with the fat content of the breasts. Different women store a different percentage of fat and water in their breasts depending on age, race, and lifestyle, which is reflected in the varying appeal of certain breast shapes across different cultures.
In Sweden, where the fat content is very high, a good hearty boob is appreciated both for its gravity-defying girth and the unparalleled quality of their breast milk.
In eastern Sudan, however, the breasts are mostly devoted to storing water, and they do not consider a woman comely unless her funbags swing below the belly button. A well-watered Sudanese woman can sustain a man for three months in the desert.
Mongolian women enjoy a particular niche of incorporating a large portion of iron into their funbags, much like the North American Beaver. Seasoned Mongolian prostitutes have been known to pierce up to three feet of hardened tank armor with their sharpened nipples alone.
The absolute ratio of breast attractiveness has, of course, been hotly debated throughout history in many a titty committee.

i currently have no camera due to recent events in my life. but i have been studying this tutorial on www.thedrawingwebsite.com and i want to know, is it a creditable source for beginners? i only started the artistic pursuit like 5 or 4 days ago and i want to know if his teachings could bring my level of skill to a prosperous state.
im all the way up to his stick figure teachings in level o but i havent quite gained the ability to draw a straight line and its really frustrating because straights lines are a must know in art.

No one can do perfectly straight lines, but you do need to practice fast, clean, confident strokes. Shaky lines can really obstruct your progression, so just practice getting a feel for drawing clean steady strokes by filling pages with a bunch of parallel lines (or well, as parallel as possible).

No prob. Btw I was gonna draw a new scapula too but forgot to. Your scapula abstraction looks as if she's really forcing her shoulders down even though she's shrugging them. The scapulas are part of the shoulder girdle which is a whole system. From the scapula extends the acromion process which is connected to the outer ends of the clavicle, above the shoulder joints. If the shoulder moves, the scapula does too. Memorizing the basic shape of the scapula and the angle at which the acromion process extends from it will be the one of the first major steps of understanding human anatomy. Godspeed

Loomis heads are not r-really applicable to anime imo (all the other parts of the body, however, are imo) and using one of those sketchfab heads or referencing from your fave artist is probably better because it's one of those style things. Animu heads are mostly flattish and are more angled than real people. (also a hint I've seen dropped is for males they're more angular in the chin region and females are more rounded)

Loomis can help you figure out the major parts of a reference image that you need for a body upon which you are sticking your animu head on, but coming up with your own body and head via the loomis method can be quite challenging if it's not perfectly face on.

For other poses, you're going to need references especially when you're starting out. You've heard stories about Kim Jung Gi and whatnot who can draw without refs but they've literally been drawing their entire life, if you want to get to a stage where you can trot out a body like they can it's many more years... but in the years in between I'd use refs.

try drawing from reference and actually observing what a face looks like. Loomis heads are a way to help make sense of what you see and make sure you aren't going too off base. Copying loomis heads is pointless unless you are doing it for a specific purpose like improving your linework, figuring out how to demarcate different planes with shading, etc.
