So I've been pretty hooked on this dudes art for a while now and I've been studying what I can find of his art to try and learn how he crosshatches like that.

Copying his work doesnt seem to be getting me much more mileage, I can glean a bit here and there but my results still look pretty diff from his.

Are there any books on crosshatching/hatching in general that could help shed a light on what he's doing?

Posting some of his art to star the thread.

His crosshatching seems pretty straightforward, he follows the forms and builds up values as needed. Honestly it's the least impressive aspect of his work

Try rendering in pencil by Guptill
Federici studied both medical anatomy (his first works were anatomical plates) and architecture.

Looking through the stuff in this thread with a critical eye, there's a lot of things about his work that tick me off - despite all the absurd perspective and form knowledge things still somehow look flattened out, and he basically uses the same texture to render everything, from stone to cloth to metal to skin. the guy went to school twice, once for anatomy shit and once for architecture.
He has extremely through understanding of both and has the work ethic of a self-actualized person. this is a man who's made the habit of putting 1000% into everything he fucking does.
He's pretty based too, he calls drawing tablets "toys" and shits on people who use them from time to time.

That being said, like most people who've built that 1000% habit, his work tends to be complicated for the sake of being complicated. it's ascetic and mind-meltingly skillful, but it's just big titties and muscle-men most of the time. I wish he did ore environment stuff desu.

>Do not imitate anyone, be yourself! There are enough clones around, no need for more! Be hungry, get to know more, study more, draw, be curious! Do not ever give up and stay focused on your goals. Above all, one thing: I am not a fan of digital techniques, but I respect those who use them, however today many young people who aim to be artists just use the digital techniques and they totally skip the traditional methods….well, let me tell you, they are wrong, big time. They are wrong because the digital approach is just another tool that allows you to cheat easily. I believe that first you need to learn the basics and everything you need to know to become a proper, skilled artist and only then and there you can switch to the digital. The other way around would be like if an aspiring guitar player would start playing guitar by playing the solos first!

>PS: I have tried, just for fun, to draw with a drawing tablet, at a Festival. It was my first time! It was a nice toy, easy to use, but it will never ever give me the same satisfaction of the traditional painting and drawing techniques!

You scratch a lot and press very firmly, additionally you are trying to copy the drawing like a copying machine, there are issues with the form mostly in the mouth area.

I think there is little point in practicing skill like cross hatching alone when you need more fundamental knowledge.
Essentially cross hatching is a "post processing" technique if that makes sense, basically if you understand the form and lightning intuitively enough you can use it. Of course the cross hatching itself is also a hard technique, but it can not work if you don't apply it perfectly, because in vacuum without understanding the form it can't look good.

Good crosshatching really isn't about the crosshatches themselves. It's much more about having a very strong understanding of the form. Once you have that knowledge, you can render however you want and it will probably look good.

Technique is like 2% of good art - the other 98% is fundamentals.

Ok, here's the big secret to art that no d/ic/klet crab will ever tell you about cause they're all fucking retarded and can't be fucked to put in a modicum of actual effort into anything.

gitting gud at art...

TAKES FUCKING TIME!!

You know how much time? A SHITTON! People like Federicci, and KJG have been drawing for DECADES, slowly cultivating their professional skills over the years. That experience really adds up over time. And no, I don't mean they drew here and there while shitposting on the internet over decades. They put the hours in, day in, day out Until they were good enough to get hired. And then they drew some more. The more you draw, the better you get, and less impressive stuff like this seems, because you can see beneath the spectacle, and understand the craftsmanship and technique underneath it just by looking at it. That's what happens when you draw a lot. You wanna develop the skills these people have? Work as hard as they do, for as long as they have. It's the only way.

Stop making stupid threads on 4chan about it, stop speculating about the secrets to it. Just FUCKING draw. It won't happen overnight. It won't happen in a week, nor a year. Hell, maybe not even a decade. This is a career. Only after 4 years of hard work do you begin to get good enough to get hired, but to get to these dudes? Decades. Nothing more, nothing less. End of story. Now shut up, and get back to drawing.

>> No.3775706

>>3775139

I have been drawing for decades you moron. I've also been redrawing federicci's art to see if I could figure out his hatching style.

I made the thread to see if anyone here had any insight into his hatching technique that I was missing in my tunnel visioned pursuit of his technique, but I'm beginning to see how much of a dumb idea that was.

It doesnt matter how much you work if you don't work smart. You can draw forever but if you don't learn to think about what youre drawing and how to draw what youre aiming at, you will get nowhere.

Of course you have to draw you absolute clown, but not everyone has the fucking perceptive ability to learn everything on their own.

If you werent such an arrogant pud you'd know that, but youre not really interested in doing anything in this thread other than talking down to the unwashed masses.

There's no way you've been drawing for decades and find Federici's hatching style that impressive. It's good yeah, but also pretty standard. And anyone who's read/done Alphoso Dunn's stuff on pen and inking techniques, or any inking practice really, should be able to easily replicate his work by looking at it.

Just so you knosw, doodling cartoons as a kid doesn't count. You being drawing the moment you begin learning your fundies. If you've legit been working for that long, and still lack the capacity to understand works by looking at them, just give up.

You're an idiot. I've been drawing for decades and I spent most of that on plain drawing gesture, and general shading. Not a once did I ever bother with crosshatching.

yeah but hear me out: maybe dont?

Not that I don't really think about muh lines. I just think about doing lots of them with blunted mechanical pencils and schtufts.

And the point of posting the selfie protrate was to to >impluy that it's kinda supposed to look like it was made by a psycho.

"I've been drawing for decades and I spent most of that on plain drawing gesture, and general shading."

You said yourself that the majority of time you've spent drawing is "on plain drawing gesture, and general shading", and that you have "been drawing for decades".

You should be honest with yourself, and stop lying on the internet about your actual skill level. If you've legit been drawing for "decades" without ever noticing enough improvement to start working as a professional, then you need to take a step back, reasses, and rethink your approach because you've clearly been doing something wrong.

I've been drawing since 2014, but only 3.5 of those years were time I actually spent learning and drawing, and in all honesty, actual improvement came not from the two years after I bought a Cintiq and started drawing every day, and with JUST that time alone I managed to improve enough to get hired professionally. What I COULD do if I had "decades" to improve. If only. In other words, I highly doubt you've been drawing for as long as you say you have. Hell /ic/ hasn't even been around for more than just over a decade.

Drop the ego, introspect into your genuine weaknesses, and put the time in. The answer will come from within.

The fuck are you talking about? The hell do I need to lie about? I never said I was an amazing artist, just that i've been drawing a long time.

>If you've legit been drawing for "decades" without ever noticing enough improvement to start working as a professional, then you need to take a step back, reasses, and rethink your approach because you've clearly been doing something wrong.

No shit you, that's why I seek out other peoples opinions and approaches towards art so I can broaden my own. That's the whole reason I made the damn thread, have you even been paying attention?

>Drop the ego, introspect into your genuine weaknesses, and put the time in. The answer will come from within.

You should probably do the same, instead of pontificating to strangers on the internet.

That's pretty great! Your lines are too straight though, look at the pecs. Federici slightly curves his lines around the forms

3 things:

Your deltoid is a bit wrong, but I know, the anatomy of the shoulder is a pain in the ass.

Federici defined the clavicle and you can see where the three heads of the deltoid connect to.

The teeth are too uniform, you should vary the shapes more and think about perspective.

The cross-hatching. Federici has a very deliberate cross-hatching. See how the starting and the ending points of the lines follow a curve, and also see how the hatching isn't parallel but has lines that converge to a point.

not that guy but i refuse to believe this ideal that one is born as a total "ngmi"
i think talent is real but any normal human with 2 hands and a brain can get good at art. i can measure my progress in months, that's what keeps me going, if i didn't improve i would have quit a long time ago
but really learning art isn't rocket science or some magical thing. all you need to do is ask yourself questions and solve those problems. the hard part is doing it every day for a long time

Well like I said it was just a quick study done in about 30 minutes, I didnt think about making a 1 to 1 reproduction of the picture, just eyeballed it as quick as I could.
