Nah, I've just matured beyond the age of thinking that I'll ever get to work on my overly ambition story spanning numerous books with expansive lore and will ever finish.
Because with how much time you spend building it up in your head, you're going to evolve as an artist over that time and ideas you thought of when you were a teen won't seem as good when you grow up and become wiser.
It's just that everyone has these big epic fantasies in their heads, but ask yourself this:
Have you started it?
Have you thought about when you're going to start it?
Are your artistic skills at the level you want it to be in order to deliver this story?
Can you be sure that it's going to be the cult-hit phenomenon you were hoping for? Or is it just extra special to you and only you because it's your idea, and us humans get more excited over our own idea than anyone else's?
Can you really sustain a living by dedicated your time to making this? If you juggle between working at a job and making an amateur book series then it will take you an eternity to finish and by then you will either get bored or be met with an existential crises at the end when no-one reads it because you didn't spend any time building a public image by working on other smaller projects.
What if you pitch the idea for the series to a publisher? Do you even have any resume or portfolio for them to accept you by?
You gotta think of these things realistically anon, not just go "NAH IT'S GONNA BE GREAT FUCK YOU".
There's nothing wrong with creating big stories but 99% of the people have absolutely no idea what kind of workload they're setting themselves up for.

Yeah, I agree with you. People like what OP described are doing the art equivalent of turd polishing. You don't spend 15 years on a single epic painting, unless you're some kind of master right? You quickly iterate through tens of rows of thumbnails, you learn to let go of failures and learn from them, you constantly make new pieces while experimenting with new techniques and concepts. So why not apply the same mindset to writing, instead of desperately holding on to the idea you had in highschool as if it's your only son? 1 perfect pot vs. 50 imperfect pots, etc.

as a person who is recovering from this, my advice is to just do the planning stuff, but also have an outline.
Once you have the plan and the outline you can just shelf the whole project and do smaller work. it's generally good practice to sort projects based on feasibility.
Then when you actually finish something, you can use your newfound skills to build the next difficult one, and the next.

I can sympathise with anyone who ever went through this, which is actually a very large amount of people.
There's nothing more meditative and therapeutic than walking home from high school with earphones in and daydreaming about your little world.
When you spend enough time with it in your head, you become so familiar with it that you begin to hear the sounds and smell the scents of it, it's quite spiritual actually.
But if you're serious about being a creative writer or making any story, then you just have to shelf it because it's more than likely way to big and ambitious to be your first project.
You can come back to it later but you need to learn how to let something go so that you can focus on something new.
That same mind that came up with that imaginary universe will be able to create better things the more you experiment and conjure up new ideas which is a really exciting thought, I don't know why so many people never consider that.
Perhaps people just grow out of the "muh universe" phase at different ages.

Great advice anon. My big goal is to make comics and trying to live off it, and for the longest time I just kept stories in my head like any other retard... Only when you start actually writing can you realize how big of a workload creating a finished story actually is. You permanently have to backpedal to fix and arrange things, it's often a big mess, and even after days of works can you really realize if what you did is pretty good/interesting or deserving to be scrapped all and started anew.
I really like it personally, but I never expected it to be this hard.

My story is just too fucking dark. My characters are inhuman and I doubt they would sell as protagonists, but I can't write them otherwise. They have dignity, honor and many other qualities when it comes to others of their kind but they're vampires and they treat human beings like food.

I have a scene where the lady vampire protagonist enters a house and butchers the people inside for blood (a man, a woman and their daughter). The vampires don't feed cleanly here. She finds a locked door and inside there is a malformed little girl the family was keeping locked in. There is no dialogue but it should be intelligible that these country people were hiding this other daughter (there's a plate in her room, they were dining without her when they were killed) and she was never let out. The vampire asks her if she wants to die in the dark or under the stars. The girl says she wants to go. There's a creepy scene where she takes her hand and walks her through the blood and corpses in the other room, once she's outside she waits for her to look up then runs her through with a sword.
I chose all the shots so it happens through the POV of the girl, with a pale long fingered hand opening her door straight up from Nosferatu, and during the exchange the vampire's head is off screen so it looks even more detached.
When the girl is killed it's a long shot with a starry background. All the scenes with humans are like that. Humans do horrible shit too like sacrifices for various reasons, but I generally put a lot of closeups in those to show that they're emotional about it.

Some LNs are decent or have elements that could have been decent but fell short due to overall writing.
Like index's magic vs science war setting has a lot of good ideas, but the plot shoots itself continuously for self insert nonsense.
Which is in large part why LNs work so great for anime, because anime doesnt have the time for a well written story, it just needs some fun and interesting elements to showcase.

Story ideas thread?

So here's my thing, itll only be about 20 pages tops so I think it's fairly reasonable.

Basically a girl who has no friends and never talks to anyone, but she has a crush on this other girl. They start going out and it turns out second girl is a sadist. First girl isnt into pain or anything but allowing herself to be hurt allows her to be close to the girl she loves, so even when the pain is too much for her the feeling of cuddling up together afterwards is enough to get her through it.

They kiss at the end and its happily ever after.

I've been running through designs and starting individual pages but it always looks like crap.

This was an idea I had in highschool, it's pretty cringey and nothing but world building but here goes: The story would be called "GIANT".

After a huge race war, a percentage of the human population was sent en masse into a giant hole in the earth that takes up a good 1/12th of the earth's surface like a giant crater however the walls are too steep to climb.
The victorious humans go to live in the mountains and with this distance made between the races, the ones living at the top in the mountains and close to the sky will be the first to be taken by god when the rapture happens and the ones at the bottom in the hole will be out of god's reach and will perish in the apocalypse.
After many ages have passed, the hole people have sustain life and over that time their bodies have evolved and adapted to being much closer to the earth's core. The increased gravitational pull has conditioned their bodies to become extraordinarily strong and all the heat from the sun being contained in the huge tube like of the hole like an oven has tanned their bodies to a dark red.
Anyway, the story would follow the hole people and their journey up to the surface, and as they get closer to the stars they encounter strange events and calamities that may be the influence of a greater force, possibly holy intentities or god-like beings.
It's not known what has happened to the earth's surface after all this time.
Is it still run by the victorious race that won the race wars all the way back? Or have they been taken by god already and the apocalypse is happening on the surface right now?
Perhaps the crimson skin of the hole people isn't because of the heat but because they've been turned into demons and this is what the apocalypse truly is?

Then a thought occurred to me: "Why the fuck would anyone care about this story? I only like it because I made it." and that's when I kinda dropped it.
Pic related is a crappy drawing I did around the time I had this idea.

'GIANT' anon here, I forgot to mention but I was very particular about what kind style it would have.
I was obsessed with progrock when I was coming up with the idea and was the main point of inspiration, from the mood conveyed in the music to the colour pallete and visuals of the album covers.
I wanted 'GIANT' to feel like the accumulation of this music genre adapted into a cohesive story, I wanted there to be a fantasy story that gave me the same sense of whimsy and wonder as progrock did. This story would be nothing without style, really.
The soundtrack (soundtrack? I was getting really ahead of myself at this point) would be an assortment of guitar, organ and strings, the most significant instruments in prog.
Man I'm getting really nostalgic now.

I had the idea for a japanese ecchi where mysterious mass produced panties with animal prints were being sold everywhere and anyone who wore them became brainwashed and would think and act like the animal they're wearing.
E.g, there would be a scene in the locker room where a random girl suddenly drops to the floor on her back and starts playing with yarn in the nude wearing a tank-top and pair of panties with a kitty print on it.
Eventually some girls become aware and go around sabotaging others in an act to humiliate them and make them look like fools by forcing the underwear on them and watch them play around in the school halls all brainwashed without their skirts on.

I would never actually make this myself though.

100% this. i've been building my comic universe technically since i was 12, but i realised how fucking terrible it all was and how unrealistic it was to put into fruition fairly quickly. i'm 19 now and rehauled the entire thing a couple of years ago since i was still fairly attached to a lot of the characters i'd spent so much time on, but i also realised pretty much everything this anon said too.
we've now got a fair amount of scripts done and i feel like my art is in a decent enough place where i have enough confidence for it and now have a deadline for this year.

I think its perfectly understandable to have worlds you build on slowly and such, more so if you actually do stuff with them, but I do agree it annoys me when I see people who've never finished anything in their life acting like they're gonna spend 10 years constructing an art masterpeice on a world they've had since they were 13.

I have a few worlds I like to think about and have done so since I was a young teen, but those have always been excuses to make cool scenes and draw cool characters; if I ever do end up being able to make art stuff, I'll probably come back to them, but I dont act like I'm gonna be able to create some masterpeice just because I've spent 10 years *thinking* about a world.

It's never too late to go into art.

I'm just enjoying writing and illustrating my story for now. I may share it with a few friends. Maybe there's a slim chance it gets put out to a wider audience but why worry about that when I'm enjoying the creation aspect. Starting a project with the intent to make it the next big thing just seems like too much hassle.

I'm thinking she should wear a rashguard as a top, since she has a lot of aquatic speriance. Then for her bag rig I kind of am designing my own concept. It's basically like a bag with a big poncho thing mounted on top that you can use for walking in shitty weather, or you can put the bag down and raise the rails that the poncho tarp is on, and you have a rudimentary tent. Plus it looks like a cape poncho and is generally neat.

The hard reality I have to agree with. I already have long become aware of the fact I live in the delusion that my story is going to take off somehow, yet I keep on dreaming about it. Right now I’m just aiming to improve my art skills until I can turn the thing into a small web comic that’s probably gonna go unnoticed, but I at least want to finally get it out of my head and execute upon the characters that I’ve been daydreaming about all these years.

Any of you anons daydreaming about character- and story arcs? I have all of these loosely flying around in my head but I don’t know how to organically fit them into my story. Or at least, I haven’t decided where I am going to put them.

The absolute worst is when you start thinking about how these characters and their progression are going to relate each other and which ones will run parallel to each other, then start changing or placing the arcs in different parts of the story because they don’t fit or you don’t like them anymore and you constantly try to craft the perfect story even though you know that when somehow the day when you put this story on paper you’ll regret it and wish you would have don it diffirently later on.

Gives us some details blease

>> No.3773529

I don't see anything wrong with that sort of mentality, except if you think it's going to make you rich and famous immediately.

Experiment. Cut out unnecessary parts of your story/world. Look for the underlying themes, and cringe at your younger self while you fix them. If your idea is of a comic or something, really consider how long you're willing to invest in it and start actually working on the damn thing. Also don't expect instant gratification; you have to build up a following and keep publishing the story before you'll get even a modest following of people invested in your characters.

It's a long road, and I'm not saying that it's unreasonable to expect to get somewhere, but for the love of god stop being an idea guy and just make your presence known instead of dwelling in your head with all those notes; your story won't be perfect no matter what you do, so stop ruminating over it and the structure will actually flow to you as you're producing it.

/ic/ in general has this problem of obsessing and overanalyzing and being stuck in their heads instead of actually doing art and working on shit.

>able to shoot down any of the shitty ideas I make
It also helps that I run the ideas through a couple of friends (one of which is really critical about fiction and my art in general) so we can end up with a better end product. I feel kind of lucky in that regard.

either google "Mozart FGO" then go on the wiki to find the japanese name so you can go onto pixiv to cut/paste the jap name tag into the search bar and filter to R-18 mode. Or use サリアマ (Antonio Salieri X Mozart) if you can't find it using the Mozart tag alone. I say use サリアマ because Mozart is getting the dicking instead of Salieri.

Read Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics and Making Comics (not sure about the order).

Read comics with good paneling and pay attention to how they flow.

Plan the script and sketch the pages as thumbnails like this guy said >>3773612 before committing to it, every good book or movie goes through a few drafts before the final version. Of course, you're not spposed to rewrite volume 1 through 100 before you start drawing, but make sure you plan your story arcs and don't just wing it.

Learn about directing rules from movies, like the 180 degrees rule, the movement of the scene is to the right almost always and all that.

Most importantly, you will never get good at it if you don't start actually doing it instead of just thinking about it. Create a short story just for fun before you start your 10 year long shounen masterpiece

It's fine if you admit when parts are retarded or you're not educated/dedicated enough to fully realize it as well as you hope to yet. Look it over, cut out the dumb shit and cling to disjointed scenes, themes and settings that could be easily worked into a more competent work you could achieve in the future. You'll need inspiration when you actually do write something, after all.
As far as 'it probably won't take off' concerns go, if you're also seriously attempting to git gud at drawing/painting in the meanwhile (which I assume you'd be since /ic/), then a very pretty webcomic has an exponentially greater chance to be successful than purely written work. It's a lot harder to tell if a book might be worth reading than it is to glance between the covers of Sonichu and Berserk. In fact, there's such an unfulfilled craving for good webcomics that plenty of them that are both narratively and aesthetically mediocre make bank just by existing without competition.
