Weird question that popped in my head /ic/: Do artists who create anime characters ever use real people as models? Like take Lucina for example, do you think she's in anyway based on a real person, or is she just solely an amalgamation of various anime influences along with the artist's style?

I suppose my question should have been: how common do you think this is?

Men don't think of specific women when they draw. Nevertheless every woman who sees it will say 'OMG this is me, this is so me!'.

If anything I think the only thing that would be used is a pose for reference. That said you could easily use any sort of posing dummy/3Dmodel.

I can tell you for sure that Oda bases a lot of characters in One Piece on real people, although his particular style is probably not the aesthetic you had in mind.

>>3763491
well sure depends on the artist. Like the other anon mentioned, a lot of One Piece characters are highly inspired by actual people, but ofc Oda's style is what gives something like that visual meaning in the first place. Other anime styles which are primarily more aesthetically default, imply different characteristics by stuff like hair color, eye shape, outfits, etc.

I think it's pretty common I was reading yesterday how toriyama based trunks off of john connor from terminator 2
also read some female character designer based a character off of her favorite actor and was asked to change it because it looked too much like him

Most of the time anime characters are just the product of experienced character designer's imagination.

Although I wouldn't be surprised if in more realistic comics mangaka use specific models or idols for certain characters. I'm search if you search up popular gravure models or jpop/kpop idols you might find girls who look similar to anime girls.

Watanabe based Radical Ed based on their musician, Yoko Kanno, based spike on some character from japanese media that I know nothing about, and had a million references to other characters and people around cowboy bebop. there might be a bit of Elvis in space dandy but don't quote me on that.
Nishigori based 02 with some inspirations from the voice actress ( or at least made the character in mind for her to play as)
Many anime and games use Jackie Chan and Bruce lee, Dragon ball, street fighter, pokemon (hitmonlee, hitmonchan), naruto, and fist of the north star to name a few.
Fist of the north star is very well known for having many inspirations from real life people.
Trigger seems to make real life references all the time, with names of characters overlapping with voice actors ( Aikurō Mikisugi voiced by Shin'ichirô Miki miki- mikisugi) (rival of ryuko, satsuki, was voiced by a woman named ryoka). They also put real life people in there as stand ins like sushio, one of the guys from pawn stars, and probably a good chunk of the PSG side characters.
There are also animation shorts like the full space dandy OP and the kiss vs some idol group collaboration that are animated and use the real life people as character designs. Also the better designers will always have some real life tie ins for their characters, even if it's just for reference. I heard Miyazaki has characters based on his mom in some films.

Having and using refs + making sure you have a drawing tablet if you don't have one + trying to get the groundwork right and giving it a few goes if it doesn't work right (especially setting the drawing underneath to say 10-15% opacity and drawing over it on another layer) are also tricks people use to make it look better.

There's a lot of tips and tricks that a lot of people use on top of that like for dynamic poses photographing/modelling in 3D a person. And if I was to draw Lucina I'd find pose refs first for the pose and then lighting refs and then style refs (so if I want to draw like, say, Kozaki, one does not develop a style naturally but by copying their style when doing it it will look a lot like theirs and eventually you don't need to think to draw like them. Also you'll usually find that multiple artists have a similar style so for example you could look up on gamepedia the artists of your favourite fanarts and save your favourite fanarts to a folder and then find other similar artists and so on. Artists can like and retweet stuff too if you want to dig deeper into how they get into their style. )

Good also to get into the habit of drawing more than just the profile, for example think about what Lucina's hands are doing, is she swinging the Falchion or leaning or what sort of background. That sort of thing can tell a story too. Maintaining the same level of art is comfy and I like your art, but think about how you can get more bang for your buck in the long run.

I don't know about the drawing itself. I don't think so, not for the design it CAN'T be common. If we're talking about anime, it's nearly impossible to "stylize" a person into an anime character, at least the average anime has a pretty generic artstyle that doesn't allow to include enough characteristics of someone to truly call it their anime self.

Now, if we're talking about a more "freestyle" manga like One Piece, yeah. This manga doesn't have a set-in-stone artstyle and Oda can draw literally anything without looking out of place, so he can put in a few more attributes than normal, enough to see a connection between Enel and Eminem. Even then it's not THAT accurate.
But if we're talking about personalities.... again, the average anime only has walking tropes and characters that don't really act human, but better stories I assume have characters based on real people's personalities, people the author knows. It doesn't have to be anything too strong, but whenever I think about writing I'll say for example
>Hmmm that girl Rose from highschool was kinda cool, how she always started using her eraser on the nearest surface whenever she was anxious, also I found her fun to talk to

And from there I'd create a female character and channel Rose through her sometimes. Of course I barely knew Rose, but I know how it felt to talk to her, so I can pretend the character I'm writing is her and have her act as such. It has to be common on the top tier mangas and books that have characters acting like real humans, I doubt the author made them up from scratch.

There is 0 artists or at least 0 of those who "made it", that didn't use some sort of inspiration for any kind of art. Look at different interviews of creative people and all of them are passionate about movies, comics, art, photography, architecture, books, games etc.

Or simply said, they feed the brain with creative juices produces by others, all the time.

For example, in 1:35 of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwpLv3ZhC5M Atlus’ character designer & illustrator Shigenori Soejima mentions his inspirations and where he picks from.
