Is talent real? Am I doomed to fail? Is there even a point in trying when there are toddlers shitting themselves who can draw better than me?

Don't bother about whether or not you have it. Just assume that you do, and then forget about it. Talent is a word we use after someone has become accomplished. There is no way to detect it before the fact... or to predict when or if mastery will click into place.

yes
>does talent matter?
no

just draw and keep drawing. stop looking at better artists and thinking they fail less than you or they're gifted. just draw.

Yes talent is real and if you're not extremely good it probably means you don't have it. You can still be an artist without having much technical skill.

>why even try when someone else is better than me???
Why is this the argument faggots on this board always fall back to? Reality check, there is someone else better than you at LITERALLY everything you do, not just at acquired skills but even at basic functions like fucking breathing. If that's really the excuse you're going to use and there's no point in doing anything someone else is better than you in, you should actually kys

Talent is just a buzzword ngmi’s use to normalize their incompetence. It disregards all the hard work a person has put into their craft. Sure Sargent was featured in the Paris Salon at 23, but he had grinder 18 years to get there. And age isn’t necessarily a factor either, James Gurney started art lessons after graduating college in archaeology (he did have some self taught knowledge going in, however).

Instead of sitting here waiting for someone to say nice things to make you feel better for lacking "talent," learn to accept what you have now and work towards being better than that. Talent isn't just some magical trait that makes you good at something; it just lets you understand shit faster but you still need to put in a lot of work if you want to be better than those who don't have talent.
It's infuriating when retards disregard all of my musical effort and give credit solely to my "talent." Then, they don't even attempt because "oh I don't have talent, I'll never get there!" If this is your mindset, you will, unironically, not make it.

you don't understand what talent is anon. If you started learning guitar tomorrow you're going to be better than you are today. does that make you talented? What that kid does is literally a recipe of drawing she either read in a book or was taught.

Talent is simply natural disposition of cognitive ability. Two humans can both learn x, but the human who happens to have wiring that benefits performing x, he will learn it faster. People dont like rhe idea of talent for the same reason they dont like IQ, theyre opposed to a sense of determinism. Its far more comforting to think that everyone is the same maleable blank slate and that anyone can do anything given enough effort. But thats simply not the case, and the "talented" person will require far less effort even to the point of achieving the wanted results without even thinking about it.

Yes I agree but what that baby did in his video wouldn't be called talent. She literally learned 4 steps from a book and did it over and over. I would never use that as an example of talent

Even if what you said is true (why do you think its from a book or taught?) Its still impressive given that its barely a toddler. The ability of relaying information learned from a written or demonstrated source which will involve relatively complex instructions shows a high amount of abstraction and coordination at an age where kids would be trying to eat the pen.

Talent is a mixture of

>Natural affinity for art e.g. visualization, spatial manipulation, visual memory, whatever
>Patience and determination to work all day and never give up
>Self-awareness and ability to analyze one's own work
>Good mental health at least in key areas (NOT being a depressive fuck that sleeps all day)
>Opportunity (e.g. starting early, supportive family, being comfortable with pursuing art economically)

These things determine how far you get in terms of technical skills. This doesn't even correlate with making it, you can be a shit artist and make a living with lasagna cat strips. If you reach God tier level you won't be ignored.
Either way if you're passionate about art you won't really be able to quit. If you don't think you have talent (and it's usually evident, e.g. I don't have the drive to draw all day because I'm depressed all the time) it's ok to only pursue it as a hobby.

if 'talent' is a general word for everything you can't control then everything you listed kind of works..but it's not usually used that way.

usually it would mean some kind of natural ability that directly helps you in your line of work.

things like patience, determination, good mental health are not usually something people would equate with talent. you don't call the mailman who has all of those in order and does his job to the best of his ability talented, would you?

Talent is real but you don't need it to make it as an artist. Hard work, networking skills, business skills are also important.

Why do you want to be an artist? For yourself or for other people?

If it's for others, or to compete with others, you're doing it wrong.

That's what it is though. You can't really have a talented person without those characteristics.

To me talent just = interest + hard work invested in whatever you are doing.

I think in some sense talent is sort of like belief in God, as extraordinary belief that also requires extraordinary evidence, for which there is really none.

Talent is just all the factor you need to be good in one term. There is no thing such as magic, genes or god's blessing that'll make you good. If you have a good teacher, if you learn well, if you practice a lot, you can make it. But it depends on your goals

I just wish I wasn't mentally ill. It's so hard to do anything when you want to kill yourself. I've always been a procrastinator but depression is the worst thing
