If your new years resolution is to "draw everyday" don't spend 30 minutes on a sketch and call it a day. Look at any /DAD/ poster and you'll see how little improvement is made by putting no effort in drawing. YOU HAVE TO Challenge yourself, step out of your comfort zone and put effort into your work. "Drawing everyday" will give you a false sense of security, if you slack off with your work then a year from now you'll be crying on /ic/ about how you drew everyday but didn't get better. Don't be a lazy little bitch, i'm trying to save you all from yourselves. Yes drawing everyday is great BUT you have to work hard as well.

My new years resolution was to draw everyday in 2018. For the first 6-7 months I did the "30mins on a sketch" faggotry and improved very little. The rest of the year I started putting in the effort every day and actually focusing and I started improving more + enjoying it more. I'm gonna keep going and IGMI and you all will too. :)

Op is saying you should spend more than 30 mins a day drawing, Craig Mullen is reaffirming what op said and is also implying the most important of the drawing phase is the foundation of the drawing and the mapping of the shadows. As in why waste time rendering when the end result is going to be awful since you didn't take that extra time fixing your initial mistakes.

good post

i thought id give up on drawing but why should i? its a skill like any other, and ive already come so far. Honestly I did think I should just stop if drawing caused me so much grief, but in the last year I adopted some more mature takes on life and my role in it. In that sense 2018 was pretty good to me. So I do think I am at least refreshed to try again, with a less 'do or die' mindset.

It's pretty funny actually. I used to think it was so fucking critical for me to do certain things and not do certain things, as if I was preserving my own personality and integrity. But life ended up breaking me anyways - which is another thing I never thought I'd understand, because I used to think all those people who admitted life broke them had fucked up somewhere.
Nope. It just happens to you. Just as sure as time passing, life does break everyone.

I'll try to draw a little more practically and confidently this year.

Most of this board can't even draw for 30 minutes a week. (it's even worse for normies.) /las/ is about starting down the path to drawing with DISCIPLINE. it's about drawing every day, whether you feel like it or not. it's the most important step to improving- which is: TO ACTUALLY DRAW.

I started at 30m/day. And it was hard. It was the bare minimum and I struggled to do even that much. But over the year, I graduated to 1 hour day, 2 hours, 3, ect. I drew for 8 hours yesterday: (2 hrs of anatomy/hair studies + 2 hrs of comic work + 4 hrs of free draw).
And yeah, sometimes I can still only get out a 30 minute doodle in a day- but at least I've drawn something. I'm keeping those art muscles active.

again, it's the starting point. of course you're not supposed to stay at 30min/day forever. those who are serious about their art will push themselves. they don't need (you) to tell them.

i bet you haven't/won't draw anything today.

He said he learned by doing 30 minute sketches, he didn’t say they were warmups. It is very probable that he did more than one of them a day but so what? If anons did one of those a day they would surely improve too, just not as fast as mullins did.

being a neet has nothing to do with being productive. you have the time but it doesnt mean you would actually put it into drawing, why does everyone think beinga neet automatically thinks youre going to put in all time to drawing lol. keep making excuses you wageslaves.

>> No.3746217

If I could get back the 4 years of neetdom that I had I wouldn't even try drawing but just watch anime nonstop to absorb as much media as possible. God knows NEETs are lazy shits who dwell on the future ahead of them instead of the present so they can actually get stuff done.

If you can't find more than 30 mins a day to draw then you're either bad at time management or overwork yourself/ have a family. Think for sec that 1 hr is twice as long as 30 mins. Drawing for 30 mins doesn't do anything for you and drawing for an hour is only slightly better. By the time you warm up your hand and get into a mindset which is productive for learning and drawing your time is gonna be up. You could barely even study for thirty minutes and retain any of the knowledge. Depending on how seriously you want to take your art then your gonna have to reevaluate your time and life choices. As far as it goes right now, 30 mins will get you basically nowhere in art when it takes masters to study intensely for 5-10 years to get to where they could be a professional.
