I'm going to print this cat portrait for my dad christmas present. What do you think I should focus on for my next pieces? Personnally I think I need to learn how to make metals and learn how to make a more polished rendering. It probably lacks in volume too.
What do you think I should work on, /ic/?

It depends on what you're planning to do with your art. I find that Photoshop and Sai are both good for digital painting. However Sai is way easier to learn, its interface is way more intuitive, coming from the fact that this soft is specialized for digital painting.
Photoshop on the other hand is a more general program (it's probably the less task specific of the whole Adobe suite). You have way more options for tweaking, ajusting stuff but learning the interface ( to the point it becomes natural) takes more time.

Sorry I posted before reading your rebuttal. Is there a position where you could sit with a mirror and observe your hand in that position? Even a rough sketch with your right hand would give you enough to finesse later. Once you've got it in as a rough draft you can check in the mirror every couple of minutes to make sure you're refining the shape correctly.

If no smartphone, mirror or PC with webcam etc, then ask a friend to take a photo of their hand in that position with their phone, and email it to you perhaps?

I'm glad that you like it!
Just like everyone I watched youtube tutorials about it (Draw with Jazza have a memorable one) and random tutorials from deviantart - it was a nice start. I've read How To Render by Scott Robertson - I didn't finish studying it yet (it's a hard book), but it helped a bit with figuring out shadows and reflected light. I tried reading Bridgmans Constructive Anatomy, but it was too difficult for me and it was hard to actually use that anatomical knowledge, when tendons and muscles are hidden anyway beneath a layer of fat. I've spend more time reading Hamptons Figure Drawing instead - it's simpler.

But to be honest the book that helped me the most was Keys to Drawing. It describes many methods of measuring distances - they help a lot when drawing from life. It's A LOT easier to draw my own hand than to memorise correct proportions and construct one from imagination.

I gave up on figuring out how to draw from imagination without refs (like Kim Jung Gi does) - it's just too difficult for me. Maybe I'll try learning it later, after a decade or two, but for now I'm using as many references as I can.

I like those bright, cheerful colours.
Your hands and feet kinda suck: the way big toe of her left foot is attached is weird, and hands are just awkward. Her arms have weird proportions, double check with your ref.
Perspective of her head is off as well: eye that's closer to the viewer should be lower a bit, not on the same level as her other eye.
I am a bit surprised with your design of this futuristic laptop - they seem to follow a trend of making them smaller, thinner each year, so seeing something so clunky is unexpected.
And I think that background with anal beads is a really nice touch.

I’m using a chamois and a paintbrush, synthetic sable I think, and a kneeled eraser of course.
On the subject of my balls, like I tell absolutely every girl I meet, you gotta take your time:)
I laid...yeah that’s right..in some graphite with hb, some with 2B, and brushed, and then blended with the chamois, and then did it over as I got the shapes of the shadows right, going super lightly.
I happened into it as you can tell with the other objects.

As for your question on improvement, I think this is a pretty good representation of the kind of style that you seem to be going for. If you want to make it more interesting, you might want to pick a more novel color palette. Yet more graphite applied.
If you guys aren’t doing from life drawings, you are really missing out.
With this still life I find myself continuously going up to the thing real close and figuring out what shadow is coming from where, what is causing “X” reflection, i.e. lightening my form shadow, etc.
This is what photos do not give you the opportunity to learn.
Photos take the 3rd dimension and flatten it out to a 2 dimension for you... just giving you shapes to copy...and you end up missing all the “whys” of how light behaves and bounces around.
Granted, my forms are off and the perspective is laughable but I think I’m starting to learn to capture the feeling of the light.

Pardon me for giving unasked for advice but i like the picture so much i want to try to give something back in hopes to help you improve.

first thing, her right (our left) cheek should be lit less i think since it appears to be a very focussed light source and the cheek wraps away from the light source

second thing, it feels like the face needs some hard edges somewhere. your soft rendering on the fur and hair is gorgeous (you dont happen to have some pointers / tips / thoughts on how to do hair like you did here?) but it leaves the eye "searching" for lack of better explanation for a focal point in the face.
even though you do have hard edges for example in the nose and eyes, there is something missing it feels.

keep it up ^_^

Colored my OC today.

>> No.3740493

>>3737657
The face is clear and well rendered. Her nose has multiple visible planes and blue tones that contrast the red and pinks of her hair. Where this picture really lacks is in the proportions and the shading/color theory. The proportion problem of the connection to the head (which is often drawn by itself in early practice) to the shoulder/s body is a common thing for starting artists. While the face shows dimension, the shoulders, hair, and hand feel flat and stiff. The other issue is the color. While the piece shows understanding of shadow and light placement, it is heavily dulled through overuse of shading with straight grey. While greys are important, they come naturally through the mixture of other colors incoorperated into the image. I like the hints of blues and purples in the nose and cheeks- push that even further! So TL;DR : connect the head to the body more by just drawing more studies, and watch some videos on color theory.
(sorry for typos I'm pretty drunk rn but I felt like spreading love)

i'm glad you like it and I thank you for the critique and kind words my good sir :))

I'm not trying to have a focused light source but more like a cuz I want to have the face have a kind of not-so-realistic soft glow, but I shall take that into account
You're completely right about the edges but i just haven't gone into any detail yet and thats when i'll decide where to put hard edges and yea the face will defintely be the focal point.

I think I did the fur pretty shit haha it was just a really lazy attempt at implying leapord fur. As for the hair, though i still find it hard to draw the main things i try to keep in mind is

>long, flowy, confident strokes of hair
>use highlights and darks clearly to show form and differentiate strands of hair

And also I pretty much only use the mixer brush if that's any help ha

I know this might be completely retarded, but here is what I was thinking about.
What if I completely ditch construction in my drawings and try to practice visualising as the main goal of the year?
I have thought about that before but then I would always return to the conclusion that ultimately for complex pieces it might be hard to keep it all in your minds eye, but the more I think about it the more it feels like a cop out.
Is there a training regime made specifically to train visualization and minds eye? Other than the obvious doing usual studies but practicing minds eye as much as possible.

Anon, I mean it when I say that there is quite literally no construction in your drawing at the moment. Please for your own sake start studying forms with simple shapes and move up to Anatomy.
There is no point in studying Anatomy for you yet because it is essentially a big interconnected net of complex shapes in 3d space bound together, yet you don't even understand how a simple shape like a cube would work in 3 dimensional space.

Values on her left arm are a bit flat, so it feels kinda dead. But it's just nitpicking.

Bigger issues are the bright area in the bottom right corner. With the strong brightness and contrasts it steals too much attention imo.
Also I'd say you have too much rain. It blocks the view and disturbs the image.

Also, that bottom foot looks really fucking weird desu

Reed switch near door hinge, enabling people to creek the door opening without triggering an alarm.

What I assume are deadbolts at the top and bottom of the door, allow the middle section of the door to be easier broken with a battering ram.

Exposed wires and terminal accessible within arms reach of the door.

Only two hinges on the door, what is it a lightweight hollow door?

A door chain? If you have to open the door to receive a small package the chain won't protect much when someone gives it good hard kick. You already have a peep hole too look through.

You should work on your drawing skills to get proportions right. As it is now everything is a bit off and it looks uncanny.

You should also work on your values and how to shade using planes to create depth. And for a beginner you should practice with grayscale before you do color, because it's easier to learn values that way.

But I still think drawing is more important for you right now. Get construction and proportions right and the rest is pretty straight forward
